2 The future of optometrists Mr Paul Folkesson, President and CEO of ECOO, the European organisation which represents the interests of optometrists and opticians from 26 countries, reveals to WMIDO readers the hot topics of his associations Which are your latest actions to support optometry? According to World Sight Day we did together with our stakeholders an activity inside the EU Commission's building where we did put up an exhibition where the civil servants had the opportunity to get their eyes screened and got information about the necessity of checking once eyes regularly. ECOO does a progressive work where needed to support our members too. This winter we have for example been involved and supporting our members according to the work at EU Commission about Mutual evaluation of profession. It's an important work while, once when decision is made in EU Parliament it will affect us all in each country. And thirdly we are working with European Diploma and to get more universities accredited and to teach accordingly. What is the role of the optometrist in Europe? Optometrists role vary a lot over Europe. Up in the Nordic countries they are a natural source in the health and care sector, many of them are now employed at hospitals as well and there is a good cooperation with ophthalmologists. But this isn't the situation in all countries and here ECOO have a great mission to fill, in letting the well established examples to be informed about and hopefully to be established in more areas to meet the needs from patients about easy access and adequate care when needed. Which are the currently hot topics? We are finalising the ECOO Blue Book which is result of a survey over how profession are defined and have possibilities to work within the EU market. ECOO was even asked by EU Commission about this information according to their work with project Mutual evaluation of profession. We are preparing it for the soon upcoming committee and general assembly meeting mid May in Budapest. Which are your future plans? During my presidency I tend to work for the knowledge about profession among civil society. An important factor for that is continuing education and training, CET, by profession on it's own. Also to continue the work with more accredited universities on the list for the European Diploma accreditation. From ECOO's side we support the thoughts about CET and will work for that to be more spread over Europe. Ferragamo license with Marcon extends until 2021 Salvatore Ferragamo SpA has agreed to a five-year extension to its worldwide licensing agreement for the design, distribution, marketing and sale of Salvatore Ferragamo branded sunglasses and optical frames for men and women with Marchon Eyewear. The licensing agreement, which first went into effect on January 1, 2012, will now run until December world weekly wonders WMIDO 2
3 The Aspirations of Aspire Eyewear Peter Friedfeld s aspiration is to be an architect. In fact, he even wrote it on his business card. Following exactly the same Aspire to be philosophy, each model in his Aspire Eyewear collection is named after an adjective that describes a specific aspiration: Anonymous, Famous, Creative, Memorable, Unique, to name just a few. Created using highly advanced, 3D printing technology, the collection features 12 prescription frames (6 for women and 6 for men) and 3 types of sunglasses (1 for women and 2 for men), all available in 3 different colors. The rims are made from SDN-4, a patented material that is so light and thin that they feel almost weightless. The temples of many models are made from TR- 90 and they all come with adjustable nose pads. Limited Edition ill.i Optics Sunglasses Entrepreneur and style innovator will.i.am has partnered with hip hop icon Slick Rick to create an ill.i Optics capsule collection. The ill.i x Slick Rick series co-created by the duo includes three variations of unisex sunglass styles with modern, minimalist appeal. The line is created in limited quantities in an updated neutral palette of purple, black and matte gray. The ultra-sleek silhouette combines Slick Rick s edgy, authentic point of view with will.i.am s signature style and the low-key luxury synonymous with ill.i Optics, to create something original. This is the first installment of ill.i Optics ongoing series of artist collaboration. A leaf of a tree for WooDone eyewear The creative team and manufacturing staff of WooDone took twelve whole months to identify the leaf of the Wych Elm (ulmus glabra) as a suitable finish for a limited edition project named Ulmus. The manufacturing experts decided to use the underside of the leaf, where the veins are more prominent, in order to highlight its beauty. A natural glue was chosen to apply the leaf to the eyewear and, likewise, a natural lacquer finish is used to prevent the leaf from drying and changing colour. The resulting eyewear is truly one of a kind since no leaf can be identical to another. Ulmus can be applied to any model in the collection WooDone. Mido Lab Academy 3 questions to... Jean Philippe Joly Federico Cecchin All rights reserved Where does the inspiration for your brand come from? From my passion for eyewear and details. I am an independent designer. Everything I do, from the prototype to the design, shooting and marketing is handmade. What's the target of your collection? My collection is for all those people who will understand the design, concept and quality. It is not for young people aged 15-20, but rather for adults between 35 and 65 years old who have personality and don t follow the mass. My models are unisex or female frames (they are called femme or demoiselle ). A comment on your participation at Mido's Lab Academy? Mido s Lab Academy adapted perfectly to the spirit of the designers selected to take part in the initiative. 4 Eyewear trends 2015: so rebel, so cool Studs, studs and more studs! The stars of the show come direct from the punk world of the 1970s: small or large, details or unashamedly set all over the frame. The style of naughty boys and bad girls - the beautiful and the damned, elusive figures of eternally tormented and troubled souls, think Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love - intrigues and seduces all age groups, even eyewear fanatics. In the classic shades of black and white or Opmood by Luca Pagni in the more original tones of Havana, burgundy, grey and green... these frames, whether for sunwear or vision wear, dictate a strong and decisive style, out of the ordinary, for those that don't care what others think. The women's models are feminine and bold, the men's understated and intriguing. Merger between Area98 and Poets Eyewear in the US Area98, which operates in the US market with direct distribution through the office Area98 Usa Llc and the partner Poets Eyewear Llc, have announced the merger between these two companies. Since September 2014, the collections Coco Song, Kaos, La Matta, Genesis Easy, Oliviero Contini as well as the new brand Robert Rüdger, are directly distributed by the Miami office of Poets Eyewear. According to the two companies, providing service through only one office would give the clients access to a more proficient organization. Dani Alvez and Bam Bam eyewear When he was little, his big sister nicknamed him Bam Bam and this is what Dani Alvez is still affectionately called by his family. Starting next summer, Bam Bam will be the name of his line of eyewear, which will be followed in September by men s apparel. The Brazilian player of Barcelona soccer team has decided to enter the world of fashion and open a store in the Catalan city. If the line is successful, he aims to expand into Brazil and the rest of the world. His partner in this adventure is Juan José Blanco de la Osa, creator of the Citriqueheart brand. The eyewear will be made in Italy. 5 Design, fashion & lifestyle A sparkling, colorful fall/winter Color and rhinestones will be the must-haves for the next cold season. This is confirmed by Pantone, the leading authority on color, and Preciosa, a manufacturer based in Bohemia and one of the leading creators of crystal components and appliques for the fashion and design worlds. The company has invented new hues that are part of the top four palettes - Touched, Blush, Tarmac and Iconoclasm a combination of surprisingly vibrant ethereal and strong nuances. The next trends in terms of color will then be green, gray, Marsala red, gold, peach, pink, dark and light blue, dark brown, yellow, turquoise and light peach. Manish Arora F/W 15/16 Keep Out ready to enter the eyewear sector The design philosophy behind the latest collection by Keep Out which produced Made in Italy bracelets, pendants, earrings, necklaces, rings, key rings and cufflinks is based on a South American legend according to which grandmothers gave their children and grandchildren a silver thimble to protect them from any kind of danger. Owner and designer Stefania Gagliardone told WMIDO that the brand is about to enter the eyewear sector. The eyewear on the market is too elaborate and I prefer more minimalist lines. And this is precisely why the eyewear project may soon see the light of day! Architecture copies nature Oxygen Eco-Tower is a residential building that won the People s Choice Award category of the 2015 Mipim Awards; designed by Progetto CMR, it was the best of the 40 international projects competing in the event on the Mipim real estate market in Cannes. The apotheosis of organic architecture, the tower is a flower that develops upwards in a precise and refined architectural design that makes it a unique project on an experience level: man in symbiosis with the environment, a transforming living space that develops in height for human wellbeing in tune with nature. Harmony not only in shape but also in the choice of eco-compatible materials. Pepercotton Jewelry Art communicates with fashion A hundred jewels, unique works made by eight designers from the Bianca Lopez Studio in New York City, are the core of the exhibition Bianca Lopez and Manhattan Jewelry Art and Design, due to open on April 25 at the Oratorio di San Rocco in Padua. Biance Lopez is one of the most important goldsmiths on New York s artistic scene and her jewelry represents organic forms. Of the artists present, Peppercotton is closest to the world of eyewear. Their work is based on a casual, innovative flow of Swarovski crystals and colored sequins suspended inside fine nylon tubes and this characteristic enabled them to communicate with the world of fashion at international level.
