1 October FAO Programs October 2014 Tulsa Program, Tuesday, October 14th Have you ever wanted to add text in beautiful handwriting to your work? The October program in Tulsa is just the place to get started. Janet Hoeltzel will lead you through a hands-on lesson in beginning calligraphy. You will get to practice a simple alphabet and learn the basics of this valuable skill. (Yes, even lefties can do this!) After this experience you will be better able to appreciate the expert calligrapher who will be coming in December from the Calligraphy Guild. She will be sharing with us the best way to apply lettering to fabric. The Tulsa meeting will begin at 6:00 pm at B-Sew Inn located in the Farm Shopping Center at 51st and South Sheridan. Oklahoma City Program, Thursday, October 9th Paper/fabric artist Wendy Fox will discuss the joys and challenges of collaborative art projects at the Oklahoma City chapter s 7 p.m. Oct. 9 meeting at the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center, 3000 General Pershing Drive. FAO Officers President - Karen Collier Treasurer Barbara Klein Membership Karen Rose Programs Ok City Judy Kelly Programs Tulsa Janet Hoeltzel & Lyn Lucas Secretary Ok City Secretary Tulsa Carol Oxford FiberWorks 2015 Jan Hawks & Lyn Lucas Newsletter Editor Lyn Lucas Fox also will demonstrate the use of a solar plate to produce beautifully embossed paper. While the plate cures prior to pressing, she will show and explain the variety of fiber projects from paper, fabric and altered books to lampshades completed by her and six artist friends over the past 15 years. For every collaborative project, each artist worked independently to produce her creative contribution to seven finished pieces, one for each member of the group. The Oklahoma City group meets the second Thursday of the month, meetings begin at 7:00.

2 Page 2 From President Karen Collier Is your art somewhat seasonal, or is it just me? Is this the best fiber art season, or are you a spring or summer lover? To my mind, a lot of fiber art/craft evokes cooler weather with its warmer fibers, but I know that s not the case for everyone. I just got back from a very nice week in Burlington, Vermont, enjoying the cooler weather, spectacular foliage, great food and lots of local art and craft. The Vermont sensibility, even in a hip college town like Burlington, is very warm and woodsy - flannel never goes out of style there, like cowboy boots will always be worn here. Even though it was in the upper 80 s when I returned home to Oklahoma, I brought the sense of fall home with me, and find myself wanting to warp a loom for a wool rug, or to pick up knitting needles and start (or try to finish) a warm winter sweater. I know cool weather will get here soon. Does the change of seasons give you renewed inspiration, like it does me - especially this particular change, from summer to fall? I have wondered if the energy I feel this time of year is strictly due to my love of the cool temperatures, or maybe from days past when fall meant a new school year, or if it is elemental in some other way for anyone who works in tactile media. Whether this season is traditionally one of new attention to your craft, or if it blends into the rest of the year seamlessly, I hope you find a fresh sense of joy in working with your hands and your favorite fibers. Have a happy autumn! Karen Tulsa PlayDate Morphs Into Project Work Time Saturday, October 18th PlayDate as we know it will be suspended for the time being. Instead we will be meeting at the same place and time to work on projects together. We must cover the rent and so the price will be only $2 per person. One of the things we will be working on is preparation for the Transforming Hate show in early The group formerly known as PlayDate, will meet at the Buddy LaFortune Community Center, located at 5202 South Hudson Avenue in Tulsa.. The group begins at 10:00 am. Cost is only $2, bring a bag lunch, your project to work on, any show and tell, and your creative spirit. Any questions? Call Kate Kline at
