12 EDITOR S TALK TO ME #WECANDOANYTHING We are turning 21! Our birthday issue is always a wonderful opportunity to celebrate You, our dear reader, and the fabulous humans behind every single page of the magazine. With an average of 132 pages a month, it means that over the last two decades we have put together with massive love thanks to the staggering work of editors and teams before us more than pages of content just for You. Crafting over 250 issues of the most relevant, exciting, groundbreaking content on all-things fashion, beauty and women s issues would have never been possible without the complete dedication and mad enthusiasm of our publisher, Gisèle Wertheim Aymés, and the editorial, sales and marketing teams. Creating every month what is the leading fashion magazine on the continent at the frantic pace we are in right now, across multiple platforms, is literally a magic combination of love and fabulous talent. And a handful of extraordinary humans: Tidi, Malibongwe, Jo, Tarryn, Nicole, Carla, Ayanda, Dimeji, Bonolo, Themba, Louise, Jess, Jacelize, Thalia, Jeanine, Ryan, Lungile and Naazneen. They are the ones who, issue after issue, month after month, run the country (figuratively, hello the www) to unearth remarkable stories, photograph striking images or work out a fun competition. It is the sum of all of our creative ideas, of all our debates, disagreements (and there are many!), hopes, smiles, differences and individualities that make us so absolutely unique. It is the sum of all of us that equals 21 years of unbeatable story telling, stunning visuals and innovative content. It is this unbridled shared genius that sparks every edition and tickles our common inspiration. Together we uphold the values of ELLE: sisterhood, empowerment, confidence; sexy, stylish and spirited. You can see these values in our Reflect spread, shot with K Naomi, in partnership with Reebok. Playing with candidness and power, and highlighting our beautiful dichotomies, we wanted to show again how we, the women, can be both vulnerable and strong. And that when we unleash our self confidence, anything is possible. #GirlsCanDoAnything In 2017, my direction to the team was these three words: Disciplined, Hot and Badass. You guessed it: conformism is not who we are and what we are all about. Plus, that s not the world we are in right now either. The world is chaotic and disruptive and that s ok with us, because we work better with a little bit of madness. Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once said and I quoted him in my previous letter You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star. I agree. And I hope that our chaos that you ll see aplenty in this issue is turning this magazine into a dancing star. Turn up the volume, we re ready to hit the dancefloor. 14 TEAM NOTES BIRTHDAY Over the years colleagues have come and gone. The ones who have moved on remain friends and the ones who are still here are people I laugh with daily. Working with people whose company you enjoy, in and outside work, is special. I have a plethora of great memories at ELLE. It makes me smile just writing about it. OUR BEST MOMENTS AT ELLE... It s almost impossible for me to choose the best memory I have of ELLE. I ll never forget when we launched ELLE 21 years ago in Nelson Mandela Square people gathered to see for the first time ever in South Africa, the Paris Collection. And then last year when I stood by our ELLE Impact Award finalist in the city hall in Paris in front of thousands again and Thato Kgatlhanye won the global award. ELLE changes lives! Generation Nathi (February 2015), my conversation with Black Coffee, remains a favourite. A humble music genius, whose mantra is universal: see life for its endless possibilities. And life is brimming with possibilities, as he wrote in an Instagram post on 11 February 2016 the morning of our 20th anniversary cover shoot a date previously associated with pain, following his accident, to joy, 26 years later, being cellebrated by ELLE. Talk about coming full circle and endless possibilities indeed. Having changed my career a couple of times, I learnt a long time ago that an office is only as fun and inspiring as the people who spend their days in it. Besides the incredible creative process we get to be part of, I love the crazy dynamic people who dedicate themselves to it. Laughter, heated debates, coffee and the occasional bubbly are all part of it. Each day is a new opportunity to engage with and be creatively inspired by the world that surrounds us. This being my fifth year at ELLE, it s hard to pinpoint one memory, if anything it s the journey that stands out. The endless twists and turns in the road since I first started as a fashion intern to my role today as beauty editor. Through it all the team has been my constant. ELLE is more than a job, we re a community of individuals who hold hands and support each other no matter what. And I know that no matter what the future brings, they have my back. My first day at ELLE was like trying on a new pair of jeans (clichéd analogy, but most fitting). Out of my comfort zone, I took the plunge and the jeans fit perfectly. I couldn t be more grateful for this opportunity, and I look forward to the next week/month/year and decade (?!) in this industry. I remember typing this note after day one, the nervous excitement I felt that afternoon, reappearing each time an issue goes to print. The ELLE team is an extraordinary bunch that I am fortunate to call family. Recently, I received a message from a graphic designer trying to enter the industry. She described her love of magazines and why she decided to be proactive by contacting graphic designers directly for advice. This message resonated with me because I had the same hunger when I first applied for a position at ELLE. With no posts advertised, I needed to make it happen. I worked hard and here I am three years later. Lesson learnt: Hard work + Dream + Dedication = Success. It goes right to the beginning when I got the internship at ELLE seven years ago, fresh out of college. Working with so many powerful and creative minds solidified my love for the brand and for the industry, which is why I m still here! (continues on page 14)

16 TEAM NOTES BIRTHDAY ON SET (continued from page 12) I often associate a place called home with family and I don t think I am wrong. But growing up has taught me that home is a feeling. Being at ELLE has brought that home feeling into my life, and when I went to shoot with Riky Rick (October 2016), it felt like I was that young family member sent to buy bread for the first time, and came back with all the baking ingredients so that everyone can enjoy a home-cooked recipe. My memories at ELLE read like a layered love story that keeps me falling in love with sisterhood and fashion time and time again. I ve got pockets of memories, however the most memorable remains seeing my name on the masthead in the first issue I worked on as an intern. Forget The Devil Wears Prada and coffee runs, it doesn t happen here. At ELLE, regardless of your level, you are empowered. I don t think it s fair for me to choose just one memory, because there have been many. But if I had to choose one, it would be December 2015, when we all went to Clifton beach. It was great for everyone to cool off after what had been a tough year for most of us. For our birthday issue, we joined forces with Reebok and TV personality, K Naomi (the brand s first African female ambassador) to launch the PRETTY LETHAL initiative. The idea: to provide women across South Africa with self-defence classes and learn how to stand up for themselves. The truth, unfortunately, is that crime is a daily reality for most South Africans, says K Naomi. And the most frequently perpetrated crimes are targeted against our mothers, sisters and daughters. Women, across the entire globe, are perceived as easy prey. But we are not afraid. Together with FightClub gyms, Reebok has created a simple way for women to arm themselves for life. Free introductory classes are offered in Johannesburg, with the ultimate goal of spreading to the rest of SA. A simple registration process at prettylethal.co.za allows you to find and book a session at your convenience. Classes run for a month, from Tuesday, 18 April to Thursday, 18 May, from 19:00 20:00. We know that a self-defence class is not going to change crime stats in South Africa, says Peter-John Morrily, brand director at Reebok. Our goal, first and foremost, is to support women across South Africa. We can t control the negative forces in our country. But what we can do is provide the tools and knowledge that give our women a fighting chance, should they ever be confronted with a threatening situation. PRETTY LETHAL is about showing women that they are not the easy targets criminals think they are. 18 GUEST LIST KEITUMETSE NAOMI NOINYANE Model, Presenter, Brand Ambassador From Channel O presenter to celebrated MC, Keitumetse (aka K Naomi) has earned her stripes in the world of entertainment, but the Mafikeng-born beauty returns to her modelling roots in Reflect. OUT & ABOUT? Gemelli and Marble in Joburg are the perfect spots for good chats and great food. FAVOURITE APP? Definitely Instagram. MOST OVERUSED WORD? Like. It really needs to disappear from my vocabulary. SHADES OR HAT? Shades, everyday, all day. LAST THING YOU DO AT NIGHT? Thank God for everything in my life. I ask Him to give me faith and strength to get through my challenges. STYLE IS One of my favourite ways to show my personality. HEALTH TIPS? Water, water, water. Water is the solution to many of our health issues. FAVOURITE EXERCISE ROUTINE? Skipping, it's very challenging and therapeutic. LAID-BACK SANDALS OR KILLER HEELS? Why are sneakers not an option...? (LOL) In this case, I d have to say heels, I'm not a big fan of sandals. SUMMER ESCAPE? Any beach far from home; an exotic place I ve never been to, with beautiful sunsets. WORST HABIT? I'm an over-thinker. It s actually a very bad habit that I need to look into sorting out soon. A milestone anniversary (happy 21st to us) calls for super-cool contributors WENDY NTINEZO Fashion Entrepreneur Wendy is a Joburg-based fashion entrepreneur, content creator and presenter. In 2016, she presented a fashion segment on BET Africa s A-List, and has been documenting her time through her newfound love of photography. What s her go-to-beauty buy? Turn to We Like To Party. IF YOU WERE A SUPERHERO? I would definitely be Spiderman. Despite all the tragedy in his life, he manages to pick himself up and carry on fighting all the time. SHADES OR HAT? My hair is too big to wear any hats so I will have to go with shades. LIVING PERSON YOU MOST ADMIRE? My mother. Her strength is unbelievable and her love is unconditional. GREATEST EXTRAVAGANCE? Perfume. I have 15+ bottles of fragrances. MOST OVERRATED VIRTUE? Patience, only because I have little of it. HIDDEN TALENTS? I believe I have a good ear when it comes to music and I m very handy. BEST BOOK PICK? When it comes to celebrating proudly SA, on weekends you will find her scouting for new coffee shops and the latest food trends, pen and notebook in hand. OUT & ABOUT? Anything Mexican. MOST OVERUSED WORD? Literally. BEST BOOK PICK? Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt is one of my favourites. ON YOUR RADAR AT THE MOMENT? Fashion and beauty blogger and IF YOU WERE A SUPERHERO? I d be Super Girl who wouldn t want to fly? HIDDEN TALENT? Baking I would love to enter The Great South African Bake Off. ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO 16-YEAR-OLD YOU? Don t let anyone define who you are. YOUR STYLE STAPLE? A denim jacket and a great pair of wedges. ON REPEAT ON YOUR IPOD? Definitely Bruno Mars. INTROVERT OR EXTROVERT?
