14 EDITOR FASHION REFLECTIONS TALK TO ME I love fashion weeks. I love the anticipation, the pace, the surprises, the wait between the shows and the countless fiery conversations. The excitement is also palpable in the office as we scrutinise the line-up (crucial, especially when a show starts right in the middle of a working day), interview designers as they get ready for their big day, or discover the collections before they hit the runway. There s always an incredible story to hear and some sort of drama too, like the wind that almost blew away the tent on the Camps Bay cricket field where MBFW had set up its catwalk, or Adama Paris who didn t receive her luggage on time for her slot (but showed on the last day instead). There s also a lot to fuel one s reflections: the designers who are showing that season (comebacks and drop offs), the almost conflicting calendars (SAFW in Johannesburg and MBFW in Cape Town), sometimes just simply attempting to make sense of the season shown (Autumn/ Winter vs. Resort). But, of course, this is all part of the fashion game: passion, disruption, egos, dramas and fabulous or disappointing designs, all packed in a few days of sartorial indulgence every year. Many seasons and fashion shows later, I am still an impassioned spectator. I am still excited every time the lights switch off, the runway lights up and the first model comes out. The hope (and high expectation) of discovering a range that is fresh, new, innovative and desirable is electrifying. And from the first silhouette, one knows. It might be the repeat of a structured shoulder pad, a subtle detail embroidered on the garment, the perfect line of a dress, architectural couture pieces, handwoven texture, that very first silhouette will always set the tone for what is yet to come. Take the most-talked about Cleo Droomer (a former ELLE New Talent winner): the model opening his show sported a monochrome allwhite ensemble that had you focused on the tailoring, the styling and the proportions. A simple in appearance throw-me-on trench coat with a floating extra long belt, worn over wide-legged pants and a poloneck top, the silhouette oozed understated elegance and magnificent savoir-faire. The second model walked out wearing a similar ensemble topped by a puffer jacket and voilà there came the volumes. It was only a slight change, albeit a significant one; the whole collection was embedded in the sequence of these elements monochrome, structured, fluid and voluminous. Repeat. Repeat again. The result: a desirable and cohesive collection. At Ituen Basi, the fabrics took centre stage; hand-woven pieces of multihued material made for a magical thread of colours between each and every single piece of her collection, as did the embroidered hand-cut flowers placed in appliqués here on a dress, there on the folds of a shirt. And when the fabric changed, then it was a similar detail on the shoulder or on the pocket that brought the range together. The collection told stories of craft, genial creativity and daring femininity. This season, there was also Thebe Magugu, who composed a collection dubbed Geology, inspired by the idea of escaping into the wild. And what a way to escape: bold, tailored to perfection, with oh-so slightly exaggerated shoulders and visible panels, he reinvented basic garments (the stripe shirt, the denims, the mini) through modern proportions and powerful volumes that projected daring, empowered and unique. Fashion weeks are so much more than just the cyclical round dance of collections. They give the opportunity to take the creative pulse of a nation, to feel what s in the air and grasp at local and international trends. What I got from this season is still a need for editing who shows and what is shown but also, for some designers, a fantastic creative energy that gets stronger and stronger with each collection. o PHOTOGRAPHY: DIMEJI ALARA 12 ELLE.CO.ZA

But there s no place like home, Jozi, says Zime, who shows off her skills in ELLE View Point this month OUT & ABOUT? I can use my finger to tie a knot on a cherry stem, my favorite party trick. BEST BOOK PICK? The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. WHAT KEEPS YOU UP AT NIGHT? Ironically, my dreams, and how I m going to live them. FIRST THING YOU DO IN THE MORNING? Check my phone. FAVOURITE EXERCISE ROUTINE? Skipping rope. See her work in this month s Fashion Cupboard MOST TREASURED POSSESSION? My Pentax K mm camera. It s not high tech by any stretch, but it s the camera my dad documented my childhood with. I learned to shoot on that camera, and it s probably the first thing I would save in a fire. FIRST THING YOU DO IN THE MORNING? I make a cup of hot water, lemon and ginger and put on whatever audiobook/podcast I m following at the time. I have no idea if this is actually improving my wellness, but it makes me feel like my day is getting off to a healthy start. WHO S ON YOUR RADAR? Gabriella Pereira Achadinha. If you re not following her on Instagram yet you should. She s a Cape Town gal whose cinematic photographs will transport you into stories you feel like you once knew. The digital media landscape is looking more and more like conventional broadcast media each year, with Facebook and Google owning most of the media space. Programmatic. How has social media shifted the way creatives engage with their audience? You can get a real-time picture of what an audience thinks about your creative work, which is exhilarating and nerve-wracking at the same time, because people are very vocal if they don t like something. Do you have a favourite platform? Instagram is my escape window: I follow a lot of cinematographers and travel photographers, artists and people who live in vans. Twitter keeps me in touch with the news and all the dirt on Date My Family. Do you remember the first advert that made you think this could be my future? I was that kid who always wanted to watch the ads even the boring ones. I think BMW Mouse was the one. Some see traditional ways to advertise coming back (like billboards): how do you reach your audience in this infosaturated world? Things go in cycles. People always crave experiences that are novel. If all your music is on MP3s, then vinyls are the novelty. So if the whole world is getting s, send someone a letter. Remember how exciting it felt to get an envelope and not know what was inside? With social media shifting the way in which we see, engage with, and consume brands, traditional advertising practices are changing, too. Fran Luckin, chief creative officer at Grey Africa and the first South African female jury president at Cannes Lions 2017, shares her throughts on what s next What more can be done to further empower the next generation of creatives? We need to make sure we don t get in their way. There are so many talented young people making things happen for themselves starting their own businesses, making films, art and music. There s a lot of opportunity for established agencies to incubate these fledgling businesses and help them fly. Serving as the first female Jury President from South Africa is an incredible achievement. Tell us more about it. It s an opportunity for our country to profile the fact that we have some truly great, highly experienced female creative leaders. And it sends a message to young South African women that we are good enough to compete on a global stage. Best advice you ve ever received? Always say the second thing that comes into your mind. Who is on your radar right now? Young South African filmmakers like Zwelethu Radebe and Lebogang Rasethaba. What do you do in your down-time? I m learning to play the bass guitar.
