My style icons are Diana Vreeland, Eva Fontanelli and my beloved Jackie Burger. My favourite holiday destination in SA is the Garden Route Knysna and surrounds get my vote. But you should keep in mind that I have lived in this beautiful country for only two years; I ve only really seen a small portion of it. Next on my to-do list is to get on my next task for the day! My style icons are Cara Delevingne and Behati Prinsloo. They both dress for comfort and wear whatever they feel like, yet they still look amazing. Their style is very grungy and 90s-inspired; band t-shirts and Doc Martens. I also like that they very seldom wear make-up. Cara My favourite holiday destination in SA is anywhere near the sea. I love the waves, but Clarens in the Free State is the best getaway. I also love camping. Next on my to-do list is not to climb Mount Everest. Let's get real; finish matric and move to Cape Town. My most recent purchase was actually coffee (which I add honey to; I'm an addict) at my school; we were busy with our drama practical and it was so cold. I'm currently listening to well, my playlist, which consists mostly of Arctic Monkeys, Alt-J, Zebra & Giraffe and Shortstraw. 18 EDITOR'S LETTER A NEW SEASON FOR ELLE Seventeen years ago, I took a plane to South Africa to intern at ELLE magazine. As I walked towards the office, rolling English words in my head like sacred psalms, I remember the deep mélange of fear and excitement that followed my every step; my hands bundled up in the pockets of my jeans, my head stretched high above my collar bones. I walked through the doors of a building in Rosebank with nothing in my bag but a letter of reference and a serious dose of hopefulness. Today, as I write my first Editor s Letter, I remember the women behind ELLE and ELLE Décor who, on my first day, took my hand and taught me about the making of a magazine. I don t think I could have had better mentors in my early career than Lianne, Cathy or Thoko: they took me along on shoots, to social events, had me rewrite my copy until it was good enough to be published, patiently watched me correct my mistakes, always giving precious guidance when it was called for. It is in large part thanks to these women that I learnt about the power of words and images, especially the beautiful ones. Right at the core of ELLE is that very need, and will, to care for one another, to defend women s place in society and empower them, to hear their voices and the powerful stories of their fights, struggles and desires and, ultimately, to help all women blossom in this world. While we will keep bringing you the crème de la crème in style and beauty on the pages of the magazine and on elle.co.za, you will also find the comfort and encouragement that go with sisterhood. We're in this together. TALK It is in that spirit that the ELLE Belles have worked hard at producing the issue you hold in your hands. In addition to the monthly magazine, it is the team who brings you daily news on local and international beauty and fashion and a behind-the-scenes glimpse of our world; and if you want to discuss current issues that matter or let us know your thoughts about what ELLE means to you, we are but one tweet away. In July, I travelled to Paris to interview Charlize Theron: between tears, impetuous laughter and wise words, she is the embodiment of woman s empowerment combined with genuine kindness. The actress and ambassador of Dior J adore turned 39 in August; when asked about growing older, she replied: 'I ve enjoyed it! Not to sound egotistical about myself, but I like looking in the mirror. I look at these campaigns that we do, and I feel like that s me, not some kind of mechanical plastic version of me. I feel like there is a real authenticity to it and that it s my body and it s me and you know that s what I get to celebrate about myself!' To take up Theron s words, that s exactly what ELLE celebrates: sexy, stylish and spirited women. We get to celebrate You.
