4 2013 Updos... made easy! Preparation is the most important step in dressing long hair. Before attempting to create an updo, it is essential to make sure the hair has been properly cleansed and conditioned with your favorite Brocato shampoo and Brocato treatment. Select firm holding Brocato Styling products to set the hair, either a wet set, or curling iron set. Once the hair has been prepared, it is time to decide the style and shape that will provide the optimum fashion forward look for your client. Brocato Shimmer Spray adds the final touch of up-town glitz! As with any work of art, all the Principles of Design apply: Movement, Unity, Harmony, Variety, Balance, Emphasis, Contrast, Proportion, and Pattern. Movement is the path the viewer's eye follows throughout the design. Movement is caused by using all elements to guide the eyes throughout the design. It should flow. You control what is seen and how people see it, much like a path leading across the page to the item you really want to be the focal point. Is the hair flowing up, back, off to the side or down? Unity is the wholeness that is achieved through the effective use of the elements and principles of design. The arrangement of elements and principles creates a feeling of completeness. Harmony is achieved in a design by using similar elements throughout the design; Harmony gives an uncomplicated, visually satisfying look. Variety uses different forms, textures, and colors. The differences, which give a design visual and conceptual interest: notably use of contrast, emphasis, proportion and color. Balance is arranging elements so that no one part overpowers, or seems heavier than any other part. The three different kinds of balance are: 1. Symmetrical balance is when both sides of the design, if split down the middle, appear to be the same. 2. Asymmetrical balance is the balance that does not weigh equally on both sides. 3. Radial balance is equal in distance from the middle. Radial balance can be difficult to achieve depending upon the type of style and if not the same, will appear untidy. Emphasis is the point of attraction, dominance or focal point in the design. It s what draws the attention. The emphasis or focal point stands out among other shapes, lines, and details. There are 3 main areas to place the focal point on the head. 1. Top and/or frontal area center or off to one or both sides 2. Crown/above occipital center or off to one or both sides 3. Nape/below the occipital center or off to one or both sides Contrast uses elements that conflict with one another to create contrast. Often, contrast is created using texture, complementary colors or extremely light and dark values. Proportion is a measurement of the size and quantity of elements within a design. Is it proportionate to the person wearing it? The face shape and body size of the individual should enhance the design. Pattern and Rhythm is consistency and repetition with textures, colors, lines and shapes.
