Sierra Watercolor Society September, 2016 sierrawatercolorsociety.com EXHIBIT NEWS SHOW YOUR COLORS, the Sparks Heritage Museum Exhibit, KATHY MARTIN, Chair, DEBBIE RIFE, Co-Chair; August 23 to October 1. Take-in day brought in 31 artists with 99 paintings; what a great turnout! Kelly Reis and her talented hanging team at the museum have done a fabulous job displaying the beautiful paintings. More paintings could have been nicely displayed on the walls. The museum has 8 display cases and we only utilized 5 of these for the 15 miniatures entered for the exhibit. Kelly chose to fill out the remaining cases with some of the Bin Art. I am happy to report I am fresh out of promotion cards and they are on their way to their destinations. My team that made this event so memorable and successful are: GINNY MCLAUGHLIN, DEBBIE RIFE, RONNIE RECTOR, KATHLEEN HOFF, SHERRY JEURISSEN, LISA JEFFERSON, JANE CHAPMEN, LAUREL SWEIGART, EILEEN FULLER, and KAY TIETZ. Much gratitude to Kelly at the museum, who is a dream to work with, making my every wish come true. Special thanks to Nancy Collins for letting me pick her brain! I wish to thank all the artists who submitted paintings, you are the big bang! The Artists Reception will be held Saturday, September 24 from 3-5 p.m. Parking is available at the back of the building, off C street, as well as curb parking along C Street. There is also a parking garage 2 blocks west of the museum. There will be 3 People s Choice Ribbons awarded as 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place at the Reception. These ribbons will hang for the remainder of the exhibit. For those of you who wish to continue partying or wanting to dine afterwards there are several restaurants and a brewery within walking distance of the museum, as well as the Nugget and BJ s Ribs (our local rib restaurant and a past winner at the Rib Cook Off just east of the Museum on Victorian Square). If you entered the exhibit but didn t sign up for refreshments for the reception, expect to hear from Debbie in the coming weeks. Please support this event - not only by providing refreshments, but by joining us. The museum will be providing the beverages, including wine. ANNUAL JUDGED EXHIBIT, Around the World in 40 Days, DIANE SEWELL, Chair; Lian Quan Zhen, Judge. Take-in Sunday, November 6, noon to 3 p.m. Take-down December 18, The annual Holiday Brunch and Artists Reception will be December 3, 9 to noon. STANDING RULES REVIEW: After a difficult take-in day at the Show Your Colors exhibit, we need to review some of the framing rules for all SWS exhibits. Some paintings were actually turned away! Others required complete re-framing on the spot. We do realize this was especially difficult for some of our artists dropping off paintings. Please remember: All paintings must be matted or appropriately floated within the frame. Painting must not touch the glass. Glass, frames and matting must be clean and without chips, cracks or scratches. The back of the framing must appear clean and neat, with no manufacturer s labels or easel attachments. These are just a few of the rules that were being followed on Friday. For a complete copy of our current Standing Rules, including framing requirements, go to our Website, forms.html. When in doubt, check it out.
NEWS FROM THE BOARD: 2 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, TRICIA LEONARD Always we come upon this feeling, ridiculous, senseless and baseless that it is beneath the dignity of an author (or artist) to manage his business matters as a man of business should. Walter Besant The artist, the person concerned with artistic endeavors, must show an assertiveness in fields that are not his or her own. John Kenneth Galbraith Creating art is a right brain activity. For those of you not familiar with the theory of two sides to the brain, right brain is considered the intuitive, holistic part of our thinking process. It is the ah-ha moment where the solution comes all at once and seems to be unconscious. Left brain activities tend to be logically thought out step by step. In reality, we use all parts of our brains all of the time but creative efforts tend to emphasis the intuitive way of thinking. However, artists need to also cultivate the left brain if they are to be successful. This message is about the left brain activities that need to be incorporated into the time you spend on your art. I have previously stated that art is meant to be shared. An artist creates, but until that artist has an audience to view the art, the process is not complete. That audience can come through art shows, galleries, outdoor displays, or sales to art buyers. In order to get the art to the marketplace, there are several activities that an artist must engage in. It has been said that 30% of an artist s time should be spent marketing his or her work. I will take you step by step through the processes that are important to implement in order to sell or show your work. Photograph each work as soon as it is completed: You can pay a photographer to snap a photo of each piece, but it is less expensive to invest in a good digital camera and photograph your art yourself. Your camera should have at least 12 megapixels and the ability to time your shots. It is also helpful to have a tripod and a light source that keeps the integrity of the color. Fortunately, cameras get better and less expensive all of the time. There are several good brands on the market. I have a Nikon Coolpix that I am quite happy with. Continued on Page 3. WE MUST HAVE A TREASURER TO TAKE OVER IN 2017! This is an essential Board position. Sierra Watercolor Society cannot exist without a Treasurer. Bookkeeping experience is not an absolute necessity, but any background in bookkeeping would be helpful. We need a candidate for Treasurer as soon as possible since nominations and voting will take place at our next General Meeting in October. If you like our organization, please take this opportunity to help SWS. This position can have an assistant, so consider partnering the duties up with a friend. Please contact K AY TIETZ at lazyckt@hotmail.com or ; TRICIA LEONARD at or at presidentsierrawatercolor@gmail.com. Our current Treasurer, LARAMIE FORD, can answer the detailed questions about this position; she can be reached at artgal62@yahoo.com or Many thanks to CAROL BAKER, who has stepped up to take over as Secretary. The Board is so excited to have her join us! Banner photo credit: Lisilk from WetCanvas, Egret Soaring.
The Magic of Watercolors Workshop, October WORKSHOP NEWS: NANCY COLLINS Put the AWE in your Autumn Leaves! If you attended the August general meeting, you discovered six large watercolors of Nancy s based on the techniques she will be teaching at this workshop. Nancy will show you how to create a beautiful painting using masking fluid and real leaves. Do you need drawing skills to do this? Absolutely not! Nancy's classes are perfect for all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. Her workshop will include color theory, watercolor techniques, painting from photos, and using fantasy colors. Workshop runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Cost is $225 for members ($125 Deposit) and $285 for non-members ($185 deposit). Mail your deposit now to Treasurer, Sierra Watercolor Society, PO Box 70564, Reno NV Please see Page 5 for pictures from the recently completed workshop led by Don Andrews. President s Message Continued from Page 2: Create a gallery of your work on your computer: You need to have access to jpegs of your work to enter shows. An Artwork file with sub files of subject matter should be kept on your computer and backed up to show every piece you have created. I also suggest another show submissions file to copy pictures from your main artwork file into. The pictures in the main file should never be altered in any way but when you enter shows, you often need to alter the size of the jpeg or the name of the file. Having a show submissions file allows you to do that without changing the original image. Keep an inventory of your work: Create a spreadsheet on your computer that includes a numbering system, the title, medium, size, price and a column to write awards received or sale of the item. The numbering system can be your own but I suggest including the month and year of creation within the number given to the individual piece. For example, a piece created this month would be 392-May-12. (The 392 is the actual consecutive number of the artwork from the first piece numbered 1 when I started my inventory.) Each piece has its own unique number that remains the same for eternity. This way, if you become an internationally known famous artist, the curators will be able to easily place one of your pieces in your body of work! Create a spreadsheet of shows entered or work in a gallery. As you begin to show your work, you will be entering shows that have starting and ending dates. It is important that you keep track of these dates so that you do not commit the same work to more than one place at the same time. At one time, I entered a painting in two shows that overlapped showing time by several days. If I had been accepted at both shows, I would have had to remove my work from one of them. It is unprofessional to remove an accepted art piece as the shows select the exact number of works that they want to display and count on artists to produce the selected pieces. For the first time, I was actually happy that my work was rejected from one of these two shows! Since then, I have been careful to note the date that the work needs to be sent to the show and the date that it will be returned to me. You probably have realized by now that the above tasks are left brain activities. As an artist, you probably are not excited about spending time doing these activities, but they are ones that are necessary to success as an artist. We need to use our entire brains to move forward with our creativity!
4 The Artown Discover Watercolor workshops were a great success, with 49 children participating in the morning and 30 in the afternoon. Thank you, Artown, for publicizing and underwriting the event, and thanks to the May Museum for again hosting it. But special thanks go to instructors EILEEN FULLER, LINDA JAMES, DONNA KOEPP, MARY ANN QUAGLIERI, RONNIE RECTOR, LARAMIE FORD and JULIE SULAHRIA, and helpers KATHY MARTIN, GEORGE BABA, JANE CHAPMAN, NANCY LE SAGE, ED MARTIN, LAUREL SWEIGART, SUSAN TISSIER and UTE VETTER all of whom inspired and encouraged these students! LESLIE KUHN, and her husband, Brent, have generously donated $1,000 to Art Angels, to help defray the cost of supplies. We are most grateful for their generosity and recognition of this program. Anyone interested in donating, any amount is always greatly appreciated and is fully tax deductible! Thank you in advance for considering supporting us! Don Andrews has also generously donated his demonstration painting to Art Angels for the raffle in December. Classes will soon be starting. We had volunteers sign up at the August general meeting, but still need help for most of the classes, as well as for the Art Angels Community Workshop on December 10. Check out the Circle of Animals/ Zodiac Heads at the Nevada Museum of Art, now through October 23: 12 gilded bronze sculptures, representing the animal symbols from the traditional Chinese zodiac. These were created by Ai Weiwei based on originals made for the Old Imperial Palace, outside Beijing, in the 17 th /18 th Century. Only 7 of these originals are know to exist today, and were on display at the Crocker Art Museum back in January/February this year.

EVEN MORE MEMBER NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS 7 TRICIA LEONARD S one person show, Going Abstract! is featured at the Reno Artist s Co-op, 627 Mill Street, throughout September. The reception will be Sunday, September 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. Tricia will also be teaching two classes at TMCC this month: Watercolor, starting Sept. 20 from 9-12 and Acrylics, starting Sept. 23 from To sign up, visit the TMCC website or contact Tricia at triciastudio@att.net. Shown right is her work, Friday Morning in the Universe. Make Us LOL (Laugh Out Loud) - or at least SMILE! When she judged one of our past exhibits, Nancy Collins, our October artist, told someone that, whenever she judges an exhibit, she chooses the winners by the paintings that make her smile. So this challenge is: 1. To honor Nancy Collins; 2. To cheer up our Nancy Gunderson (who will hopefully will be well enough to paint the challenge), and 3. After November 8, and for the next 4 years, no matter who becomes our next President, we unfortunately will not be laughing or smiling, so take advantage of the next 2 months and paint happily! Judy Berland UPDATE YOUR BIO CARDS AND BIO PAGES It s been mentioned that the Bio Books, placed out at every SWS exhibit, are sadly out of date for several of our members. This is where art patrons look to find more information on an artist who s work they admire. Please send updated information and photos of your art to KATHLEEN HOFF as soon as possible, so your best work is seen at the Annual Judged Exhibit in November/December! CHANGE IS HARD BE SURE YOUR THOUGHTS ARE HEARD! Speaking of Exhibits: Changes are being considered for our Annual Judged Exhibit, including the location and dates; jurying in all paintings beforehand; fee to enter; eliminating some or all of the categories (especially the Champions category); media used including collage, acrylic, etc.; reducing the number of awards given out, and number of awards allowed per artist. If you want to be a part of this discussion, please attend the October 15 Board Meeting and let your voice be heard. If you are unable to attend, contact any one of the Board members (see Page 2) prior to the 15th; don t wait until it s too late to be a part of these important discussions! WELCOME, new members RITA HANKS, SHARON HAY, LAURIE AGNEW, CHRISTINA WELCH and TRACEY GOFF! Say...would any of you be interested in the Treasurer position?!?
