You can also use the app for a heritage trail RECOLLECTIONS SEPTEMBER 2015 President s Report It was very pleasing last week to receive an from Tim Goward, City Sport and Venues the part of the Redland City Council that administers the showgrounds. Following our request to build a concrete pad for our steam engine during showground events, Tim has advised that as well as the pad there will be car parking and drainage works completed. This is an early phase for more showground work. The work most interesting to us is the 23 bay carpark being built between the museum and the tennis courts and the drainage work that will move the eastern drain underground. There is also a path leading from the carpark to the events room. A footpath running north/south is expected to be completed when more funds are available. The timing is later this year (this may mean the financial year). A copy of the plans will be placed in the kitchen. If you have any comments, please come and talk to me. This will be a great improvement and a benefit to the museum. Another interesting development came from a Museum and Gallery Services Queensland workshop held here on the 10 th August. A representative from the company izi.travel gave us a demonstration of a new app. The idea is that the museum uploads object information to izi.travel. When a tourist visits the museum, using our wifi they can quickly download our information and simply walk around the museum and listen to stories about the Redlands. It is free to the museum except if you want to use professional to upload the information. Check it out by going searching online for izi.travel. If anyone wants to be involved in this exciting project let me know. We are looking for volunteers to help at Redfest (see Sylvia), the Redland Model Train Show (see Hein) and the Cleveland Camping, Caravan, Boating 4x4 Expo (see Tony) or leave your name with admin. Do not forget to sell some Rotary raffle tickets during this busy period. It will be launched in the Dunn Wing on 25 th October and will be on display until the end of the year. Gwen Morton and Tracey Mann recently attended a professional development session run by volunteers from the Museum Australia Education Queensland (MAEdQ) organisation. The MAEdQ is part of the Museums Australia, which is the national organisation for the museums sector, committed to the conservation, continuation and communication of Australia s heritage. The Queensland branch a newly established network whose purpose is to develop a strong education network, provide opportunities to connect with professionals and share information. (ref. MAEdQ leaflet) The title of the session was What do teachers want from museum spaces? The panel consisted of teachers, curriculum specialists and education officers from University of Queensland and Queensland Museum, addressing more than thirty delegates from various museums and schools in the Brisbane region. The key focus was aimed at immersing students in an adventure through museum displays in a practical, hands-on way, different from the digital images viewed in the classroom. It was also emphasised that the museum activities would be building on knowledge already acquired. Ideas to help attract schools to museums were also provided, as well as networking opportunities with participants.

3 A HAPPY GARDEN CLUB VISIT. On Thursday, 25 th June, 2015, members of the Mt. Gravatt Garden Club visited the Museum and greatly enjoyed their visit. That same evening, Valerie Portley, one of the visitors, sent an e mail to Kim, describing the Museum as so well laid out, neat and tidy. Valerie had taken a number of photos during her visit and sent two of them to us. The lady standing beside our Beanie Tree had just bought the beanie, Paradise, which she is wearing. This is the sixth year that our Beanie Tree, originally an idea of our Manager, Hein, has appeared. Sales are doing well, probably because of the present chilly weather. Cecily and Rick located an advertisement for our Tree in the 4 th July edition of the Courier-Mail. It remains a mystery to us as to how this information came to the notice of the Courier-Mail but we assume it was via the Website, which has had over 10,000 hits so far this year. In addition to photographing the Beanie Tree, Valerie also caught on camera three members of her group admiring Doug Gorring s model of Whepstead Manor. Bob Gray, assisted by his wife, Florette, has recently added some new touches to this model. Of great interest to many visitors, especially children, is the ghost of Gilbert Burnett s daughter, Edith Mary, which appears at regular intervals at an attic window! This daughter was 17 years of age when she disappeared without a trace in 1877, just a year after the Burnett family took up residence in Whepstead. So the Mt. Gravatt gardeners certainly enjoyed their time here with us! Sandra Davis Everyone is sad that the lovely Alison Seeley our Administration Assistant for over five years has resigned. Alison has been a great visitor Ambassador and is much adored by the volunteers. Good luck with your new journey, Alison. Alison is pictured surrounded by friends of the Museum who came to farewell her at a special party on her last day.

4 A VISIT TO ANOTHER MUSEUM. MANDER s garage in Bloomfield Street from On 23rd July, Graeme and Sandra Davis visited the Heritage Centre in Wongawallan Road, Mt. Tamborine, and were struck by certain similarities to our own museum here in Cleveland. Two of these were its Smithy and German wagon, which, although it happens to be GREEN, resembles our blue and burgundy wagon, donated by TED ZANDER and imported from Germany in There are a number of free standing shops which advertise certain products, such as Arnotts biscuits and Bushells tea. These correspond to our hoardings, but are arranged to form a village. One advertisement we found very humorous was that of the barber, whose name, BILL HACKETT, did not exactly inspire any great confidence in his skills, especially in the way of a shave! The Centre is staffed by volunteers and has a lovely ambience. On this particular day it was pouring rain, so nobody was about, but on previous visits it has been quite crowded. The heavy rain and mist are visible in the photos taken outside. Another similarity is the Caltex petrol bowser, which resembles the PLUME petrol pump in our Transport Section. RON FLOWERS restored and donated the PLUME bowser, used at REG SANDRA DAVIS.

ALL ABOARD FOR THE MODEL TRAIN SHOW Nothing better than watching young children, accompanied by their parents and grandparents, being fascinated by trains and more trains.

5 ALL ABOARD FOR THE MODEL TRAIN SHOW Nothing better than watching young children, accompanied by their parents and grandparents, being fascinated by trains and more trains. Model railways will be set up in the Cleveland Assembly Hall in Smith Street on Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13, as part of the fourth annual show hosted by the Redlands Model Railway Group. There are several layouts that are here the first time at our show, including one on its maiden display, and a new dealer who specialises in old trains and tin plate, meccano, and such like. We have also booked the Bendigo Bank Piggy mascot for two hours each day. Admission to the show costs $5 for adults, $4 for concessions and $1 for children. It also includes entry to Redland Museum on the same day. The first trains will depart the station on both days at 9am. The show will be open on Saturday until 5pm and on Sunday until 4pm. Let Theatre Genesis take you back to the magic days of radio drama, when we huddled around the mantle radio to be alternately enraptured, terrified or brought to tears all through the magic of the spoken word and our own wonderful imaginations. With the valued support of RedFest and RPAC, a radio drama workshop in 2014 saw the birth of several brand new radio dramas by local playwrights. Six of these plays will be presented at Redland Museum, just as if you, in the audience, were in the studio watching a live broadcast; actors with scripts in hand, sound effects, a gorgeous girl chorus and the most important ingredient of all your imagination. Join us for the journey through the human heart as we unfold tales of love, exasperation, jealousy, murder, and hope. Join us for a good laugh, a good cry and a whole raft of memories. 6 TEXTILE NEWS AUGUST 2015 Our Textile Group has had a busy year processing the many interesting textile items which have been donated to the Redland Museum and I would like to thank our Textile Group - Anne Tully, Anne Fermer, Agnes Tardant and Nola McCullagh for their hard work and loyalty during the year - except for sickness and holidays they rarely miss a day. I would like to mention two items we have processed: One is a beautiful black silk bustle skirt from the 1860s, this has many drapes and flounces and frills of black jet beads, it was surprisingly heavy but also fragile. It had belonged to a lady whose wealthy family owned coal and iron mines in Wales, we hope to display it later in the year. The other is a very rare item - a silk nightgown made from a parachute during WWII. This item is currently on display in our Threads of Courage Exhibition. Our thanks to Rick Thomason for allowing us to use the silk postcard display from his last Exhibition. Some of our activities have included 3 special Exhibitions; Wedding Gowns; Festivals & Shows; and the current one - Threads of Courage. We assisted with a Textile display in 3 glass display cases and clothing for 3 models for the Not Just a Mannequin Exhibition and have also supplied textile items for internal displays by the Library and the display cases in the main hall. Our members have attended workshops on Conservation and Care of Textiles by Tess Evans ACR and also a workshop for the National Dress Register. We have visited Textile Exhibitions, eg Golden Years of Hollywood. Throughout the year we have been processing (along with other donations) many items donated by a lady who had been a Milliner for over 40years and hope to have a Millinery Display later in the year. Our many thanks to Rick Thomason, Ray, Don, Steve, Mike, Russell, Peter and Graham and the collection group, Kellie and Les Warner and Alison and Kim for their unfailing assistance during the year, whenever we needed something to be done they were there! We also supply knitted toys and craft mobiles for the Museum to sell at the front reception and I would like to particularly thank Anne Fermer who has knitted so many of the toys, Agnes who has created the mobiles and Audrey Warner who has recently started knitting toys as well, you do a great job! Since the last AGM we have made $513 for the Museum from the sale of these beautiful and cute toys and mobiles and a total of $1,718 since we started this idea 3 years ago. I hope you have enjoyed our displays and Exhibitions. LIBRARY LINES Jan Banks Thanks to Sandy and her team for re-arranging the shelves in the Library. The books are in the same area, the periodicals are together and the binders are stored together. As a result the shelves look neater and hopefully it should be easier for people to find materials. On display: in the Library:- more Museum member stories and books on flight to supplement the upcoming exhibition Wings over Redlands in the glass cabinet near the parlour:- 19 th century photographs in albums and Museum member stories to enhance the Seniors Remembered display. Remember if you remove any item from the Library please record the details in the book on top of the filing cabinet.
