1 REDLAND MUSEUM RECOLLECTIONS JULY 2014 PRESIDENT S REPORT One thing is constant at Redland Museum, and that is things keep being moved around. Now the Display Committee has a few new projects underway. You may have already noticed the Music Room and the Military Room have been swapped. The idea is to make a larger area for the Military Room display in preparation for the ANZAC 100 commemoration and to bring the Light Horse display into closer proximity to the Military display. There are also benefits for the Music display, as now the larger keyboard instruments and gramophones are displayed around the open central area where they can be better viewed and demonstrated to groups of visitors. Military Comrades on guard around the Light Horse man and his Waler (named after NSW where these stock horses were bred) before being repositioned in their new space in the Military Room Very soon we plan to start on setting up the printing equipment as a working print shop that can be safely demonstrated to our visitors. The plan is to enclose the printing area in a vintage style shop counter that will provide a display and demonstration surface, while also acting as a safety barrier. We are also continuing with planning the Small Museum s Conference for late August. The conference website has been activated and we are receiving registrations. This promises to be a fabulous conference, with International, National and Local speakers, and a special Masterclass coordinated by the International Institute for the Inclusive Museum. Of course there will be a number of pleasant social activities presented in conjunction with the conference. The highlight will be the conference dinner on Saturday evening; a floating dinner on board Stradbroke Ferries newly refurbished Minjerribah. It would be nice to have as many as possible of our members attend this conference. Consisting of three large central works and interrelated smaller works, a recorded soundscape, live music performance, talks and workshops. The three exhibitions overlap in content and concept, visually and musically across the gallery and museum. For more information info@colinofford.com October/November Personal Histories An Artist Book exhibition convened by Robyn Foster inviting submissions worldwide. There are at present over 50 artists involved from around the world, and Robyn has set up both a Blog Site and a Web Site. 3 The conference includes thirty local, national, and international speakers presenting on a diverse range of interesting and relevant topics. The Conference will be supported by a worldclass Masterclass, tours of local museums, galleries and community highlights, and enjoyable social events. The Conference will provide participants with the chance to: Network, communicate, have free and frank debate, and gain practical skills and information. Explore the reasons we should connect with our communities, and the pathways to achieve it. Welcome to the South East Queensland Small Museums Conference 2014 About the Conference The South East Queensland Small Museums Conference 2014 is being presented by a partnership between Redland Museum, and North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum, with support from Redland Art Gallery and Redland RSL Museum. We invite museum professionals, staff, volunteers, suppliers, and anyone interested in the work of small and regional museums and galleries, to take part in this outstanding personal development and networking opportunity. The Conference Theme Pathways connecting museums and communities A Diversity of Pathways: Engaging and working with different demographic segments of our communities. Whose Pathway: The role of the small museum: for whom does the museum exist; obligations to education; use of museum space and resources. Pathways to Interpretation: Interpretative theatre, digitization, oral history, film, and text. Pathways to Partnerships: Membership and volunteers, community organisations and local government, and funding opportunities. Pathways to Professionalism: Current museum technology and management practice.

4 Awash with History the Floating Conference Dinner ($55) (Saturday 23 August. Departs Cleveland Toondah Harbour at 4.45pm, drops at Dunwich at 8pm, and at Cleveland at 9pm) The Main Conference (registration $160) (Saturday 23 August, at Redland Museum, Cleveland, and Sunday 24 August, at UQ Moreton Bay Research Station, Dunwich). The Masterclass (registration $75) Spirit of Place: Connecting Collections & Communities. (Thursday 21 August, at Redland Museum, starting at 9:30am). It will be coordinated by the International Institute for the Inclusive Museum, and conducted by: Professor Amareswar Galla, Executive Director, International Institute for the Inclusive Museum Social Events Conference Welcome and Exhibition Opening (Free) (Friday 22 August. Redland Art Gallery, 6pm to 8pm) Join us for a glass of champagne and light refreshments at this relaxed social evening at Redland Art Gallery. Take the opportunity to meet the speakers and other delegates, and to enjoy the displays at Redland Art Gallery. This event will be held in conjunction with the opening of a new exhibition, Artefacts from the Curlew Republic: painting, video art, sound sculpture and music by Colin Offord and Yilan Yeh. Come aboard Stradbroke Ferries newly renovated ferry Minjerribah, for a Conference Dinner to remember! Cruise the gentle waters of Moreton Bay on the Minjerribah, which has been completely renovated and updated to celebrate the company's 50th anniversary, and it is ours for the night! Cozy up in the café, watch the city lights or gaze at the magnificence of the Milky Way from the top deck. Entertainment, sumptuous dinner and drinks included. This will be a night to remember! 5 Redlands Model Railway Group The Redlands Model Railway Group, a Special Interest Group of the Redland Museum has built a show layout Barinia. It is a modular layout in OO scale so the members can run their trains on it in OO, HO, and S scales. One member is about to try his On3 Galloping Goose on the layout soon (may have to enlarge the tunnels for it to fit!). The Barinia Layout has been displayed at the Brisbane Model Train Show where it received rave reviews from adults and children alike. We handed out hundreds of pamphlets advertising our show in September this year. On 12 and 13 July the group is displaying Barinia at the Gold Coast Model Train Show. In addition, three members display their own layouts at various shows and help to publicize our show. Preparation for the Third Redlands Model Railway Show is well underway, with only three or four exhibits the same as last year out of twenty five. Third Redlands Model Railway Show One of the Biggest Model Train Shows in Brisbane 13th & 14th September, 2014 Saturday 9 to 5, Sunday 9 to 4 Cleveland Assembly Hall, 44 Smith Street (Canteen, Free Parking) Adults $5, Concession $4, Children $1, under school age free (Includes entry to the Redland Museum on same day) Anyone is most welcome to check the group out. John Burt OUR TOMMY DOLL SAGA From 2006 to 2012 we thought our World War II Tommy Doll, donated to the Museum in August, 2005, by Ken Larby, was the only one in existence in the world. We were proven wrong In the December, 2012, edition of Recollections I reported that we had made contact with Esther Lutman at the Victoria & Albert Museum of Childhood in London, who told us that TWO more of these cute little dolls had come to light. However, since then, thanks to our Museum Website, THREE more of these cheeky little dolls have been located: one from a Peter Jansen in Doorn in Holland in February this year, one from a Maureen Bindley in England in May this year and on 5 th July this year yet another from England. As yet we have no details on thisthe SIXTH one but expect to hear from Esther soon. We are now wondering how many more of these dolls will surface. Perhaps a whole battalion? 6 Notes from the Treasury WHY DO WE NEED PURCHASE ORDERS? Purchase orders have been introduced as from 1 July 2014 for the following reasons: The museum has limited operational funds to spend and needs to allocate these funds across a range of activities. Our spending must to be controlled and focussed. Our spending requires tracking to stop areas of overspending. It is good business practice. At any time the management committee can now determine where spending is occurring. All volunteers want to help make the museum better but the museum cannot afford to pay for a favourite project without extra funds being sourced or generated. Q and A about PURCHASE ORDERS How do I get reimbursed for my money spent for the museum? You will be refunded if you have a signed Purchase Order. How do I get a signed Purchase Order? You can obtain a Purchase Order from a member of the sub-committee looking after that area. How do I know what sub-committee is looking after an area? You can ask the Museum Manager or look at the organisational chart located in the kitchen notice board. I have the Purchase Order and bought the goods, how do I get refunded? Attach a copy of your invoice to the Purchase Order and give this to the Administration Officer on duty. If you have provided bank account details your refund will be paid directly to that account either on a Tuesday or Friday after paperwork presented. My Purchase Order was for less than $20.00, can I get cash immediately? Yes. If under $20.00 present your Purchase Order and Invoice to the Museum manager and you will receive cash immediately. I do not want money refunded to my bank account and would prefer cash. My spending is above $ How will I be repaid? There are two options: 1) When you obtain the Purchase Order ask if you can use the Museum load and go debit card. Using this card means you do not have to be refunded at all. 2) If you have spent your money and only want cash. Cash refunds are available at the office on the Tuesday following the week the paperwork is received. If I want to be paid in cash for a purchase above $20.00 do I need more paperwork? 7 Irene Davey 2014 Lecture Series presents her lecture Wednesday 30 July 2013 at 2pm Songs of South America This will be an illustrated talk about the Museums and other interesting places Irene visited on her trip to South America and Rapa Nui (Easter Island) last year. Places visited include Santiago, Porto Alegre, Rio de Janeiro, Iguassu Falls and Easter Island. It will give listeners a little insight into the history and culture of Brazil particularly. Speakers note: the reference in the title to Songs is because many of the places visited have been celebrated in popular songs: Rio, Copacabana, Ipanema, Argentina. Free to RMI members Afternoon tea will be served following the lecture. Please advise the office of your intention to attend. Vale Henry We would like to pay tribute to RMI Life Member Henry Rudge for the many dedicated years in which he served the museum as Honorary Curator, sometimes under difficult conditions, which he always bore patiently. Our Exhibitions Officer Rick Thomason would like to recognize the excellent exhibition he curated to commemorate Australia Remembers in This was before we had a dedicated exhibition space and Henry produced a large and comprehensive exhibition of wartime memorabilia throughout the Redland Museum. Rotary Club of Redland Sunrise Doug and Annabelle recently attended the Redland Sunrise meeting on behalf of the Redland Museum. This was to be present when their art union raffle was drawn and to receive from the club our share of the proceeds which was $446 from the 223 tickets sold. Thanks everyone who purchased tickets, and thanks especially to Rotary Club of Redland Sunrise for this great fundraising opportunity. 8 Treasures from the Museum Library Remember The Phantom, Richie Rich and Asterix? Have a look at examples of these and other comics from the Museum Library in the glass case in front of the ramp. If you need items for display from the grey metal presses in the library you need to consult with a member of the Museum Staff before removing them. Please make sure when you take an item out of the Library either to read, or to include in a display, you record the Dewey number, title, your name, the date and signature in the book on top of the filing cabinet. When you return the item to the basket on top of the filing cabinet in the Library record the R date and sign again.
