2 Over.8 million dult men nd women on protion or prole At yerend the numer of dult men nd women in the United Sttes who were eing supervised on protion or prole reched record high,88,575, up from 3,757,8 on Decemer 31,. These dt were collected in the Annul Protion Survey nd the Annul Prole Survey conducted y the Bureu of Justice Sttistics (BJS). In the numer of dults under supervision in the community incresed 1.5%, which ws less thn the verge nnul increse of 3.% since. The totl dult correctionl popultion, including those incrcerted nd those eing supervised in the community, reched new high of,88,800 t the end of. At yerend, 3.%, or out 1 in every 3 dults in the United Sttes, were in Stte or Federl prisons, locl jils, or under the supervision of protion or prole uthorities, up from.7% in. Texs nd Cliforni led the Ntion in numer of dults supervised in the community More thn 1 million persons eing supervised in the community in, or out 1 in 5 protioners nd prolees, were in Texs nd Cliforni (tle 1). Texs led the Ntion with 53,0 persons on protion or prole, followed y Cliforni with 85,03. Wshington led the Ntion with the lrgest percentge of its dult popultion under community supervision (3.8% t yerend ), followed y Texs (3.3%) nd Rhode Islnd (3.%). Cliforni s community supervision rte of 1.% ws slightly more thn hlf tht of Texs. Nine Sttes reported tht fewer thn 1% of their dult popultions were on protion or prole. New Hmpshire hd the lowest rte of supervision in the community (5 offenders per 100,000 dults). Aout 7 in 10 protioners were under ctive supervision nd were required to regulrly report to protion uthority in person, y mil, or y telephone. The percentge of protioners required to report regulrly dropped stedily, from 7% in to 7% in 000 nd to 71% in. At yerend, 1 in protioners hd sconded: though still on protion, they hd filed to report nd could not e locted. Among ll persons on protion, sconders incresed from % in to 11% in. In, 5% of protioners hd drug lw violtion; 17% were sentenced for driving while intoxicted or under the influence of lcohol; 1% for lrceny/theft; nd % for other ssult, excluding sexul ssult nd domestic violence. Fewer thn 10% were sentenced to protion for domestic violence (7%), minor trffic offenses (%), urglry (5%), frud (%), nd sexul ssult (3%). Aout 3 in 5 of the more thn million dults dischrged from protion in hd successfully met the conditions of their supervision. The percentge of protioners dischrged from protion supervision ecuse of incrcertion due to rule violtion or new offense vried from 1% in to 15% in 000 to 1% in.
