She s a go-getter and she s fearless in all areas of her life. The Seattle native, who graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor's in Fine Arts from Cornish College of the Arts, first set her sights on L.A. at 21 with a stint on American Idol. Although the aspiring singer made it to the fourth round, she knew she was building a life in L.A. for the long haul. I auditioned for American Idol just so that I'd get to meet the judges, she recalls. I got to shake the hands of Olivia Newton John, Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul, who kissed my cheek, she recalls. She adds her dream dinner guest is Meryl Streep, who accomplished her life goals with a similar mindset. Sarah, whose ultimate ambition is to empower other people to be their best selves through fitness, nutrition and meditation at her studio, understands that if one wants to succeed, she has to put herself out there with confidence. I am constantly finding ways to channel my many passions into my life, Sarah, 32, explains. I have a vision on what my goals are, and believe I must keep my mind learning, my soul thriving and my heart open, no matter where this life takes me. I believe I am capable of everything and anything. I am confident that when the right individual comes into your life, together you can achieve great things. And if that means kicking ass and takings names, then so it is! Although dating life is notoriously challenging in L.A., Sarah remained undaunted and made time to meet the right guy and thoroughly get to know him. He s Ryan Manuel, 37, a Rhode Island native who came to L.A. in 2007 years ago to pursue a career in the film industry and acting. The actor and Gazelle Pilates-based personal trainer is familiar to locals as, the Hamer Toyota guy of Mission Hills. After the two connected online, there were weeks of chatting online and a background check. When the time was right, they met in person for sushi and hit it off. Today, Sarah and Ryan reside in the western reaches of Sherman Oaks by the L.A. River, with her 12 year-old silky terrier, Henry. Outside the studio, she enjoys sewing, painting, DIY projects, dancing and singing. Ryan stars, directs and writes his own films, he makes amazing mixed CD's and recently released his first novel, "Don Juan of Detroit. They are looking forward to favorite holiday Halloween, where they plan to host a party in October at the studio. It's a central location, easy to get to the grocery store, quiet and safe." Although the couple does not have children of their own, one of Sarah s professional focuses is working with local families and adults who want to reconnect with their younger SARAH OLDS Valley Life Drives this Olds selves to build their inner strength. She describes it as her, insatiable need to help people, whether they hope to improve performance, flexibility, core strength, spine alignment, or overall attitude about their lives. People are my greatest inspiration, she continues. My biggest pleasure is working with families, husbands and wives, grandparents, parents, young adults, teenagers, and a -year old wild child who literally keeps me on my toes who has become a studio favorite. I work with generations, and this is quite an honor that so many families have instilled their trust upon Gazelle Pilates. I truly enjoy working with individuals who value themselves and want to make healthy changes. They scream, yell and swear, a lot, threaten me with magic circles and poles, but I stand firm and 'boy do we get results. Sarah s personal belief in the benefits of a Pilates practice stems from her lifelong training as a dancer. When she had major neck surgery due to Thyroid Cancer, as well as a protruding disc in her lumbar spine and a torn ACL in her left leg, she credited Pilates as the method of rehabilitation that brought her back to life. She also says it is a good way to help her students connect with their all-round health as well as their physical appearance. The industry might be over saturated with trainers, but too many people drive too much and do not walk enough, Sarah continues. We are here to help and are ready serve. I also follow several instructors on Instagram from all over the world and am developing relationships to better serve my clients in the area. While I don't idolize anyone, I focus on the opportunity to learn more from other professionals with similar goals. "Don t get me wrong, I absolutely love Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani and Lady Gaga, because they are all currently blonde bombshells, but most importantly, they have the same message, she continues. Be yourself. With this philosophy in place, I am my own hero. I am who am I because of what life has brought me and it has also brought me goodness, from a wonderful boyfriend, to fantastic friends and clients who are my extended family. And she looks forward to adding to that family with some new offerings, from a free community meditation class to Private Yoga Training, Personal Training (launched in July) and a Semi-Private Class Series starting this month. The studio recently debuted Pilatespractice, teaching the authentic Pilates method based on the art of Contrology, done by certified instructorsfrom Joseph Pilates protege Romana Kryzanowska, founder of Romana s Pilates of New York. If you surround yourself by positivity, then you will only gain a healthier sense of self and achieve your goals, she affirms. 4 SEPTEMBER 2017
