1 Leggings and jeggings, crop tops, low-slung pants, Harry Potter glasses, meat dresses, beard lights and Goth are a few recent fashion trends that range from the rather odd to the outright outrageous. Our forefathers would never have given in to such absurdities. Or would they? From head to toe, strange fashions have popped up through the ages, every bit as bizarre as some of the ones we see today. Shoes don t the ladies love them! Not always though. During the Renaissance in Vienna, Chopines became popular with the ladies of the court. They were made from cork or wood and were designed to be worn over regular shoes to protect them from the dirt and dust of the unpaved streets. Chopines were a status symbol among the wealthy, towering to heights of 20 inches or more. Balancing on those tottery treads was a feat in itself, so ladies determined to walk the walk were often accompanied by a servant to lean on. Of the many fakes in the fashion world, one of the most bizarre cropped up in 18 th century Europe when women took to wearing false eyebrows made from mouse skin. The mouse eyebrows had one great drawback as they tended fall off at the most inopportune moments. Imagine the embarrassment of sitting down to dinner at a fashionable gathering only to have your eyebrows drop into the soup. Thankfully the fashion was as short-lived as were the poor mice who sacrificed their lives for it. In the early 1900s, French fashion designer Paul Poiret introduced women to the hobble skirt. The name likely came from the practice of hobbling horses by tying or hobbling their front legs together to prevent them from running away. Certainly no woman could run in this ankle-length skirt with a bottom so tight it literally shackled her legs. Instead, wearers were forced to walk in short shuffling steps, in constant danger of tripping and falling. Entrances to trains and street cars were lowered to allow the fashionistas to board. By 1914, some were even equipped with special Hobble skirt cars. Fortunately, Pine Meadows Community Newsletter August 2016 Glad Rags and Fashion Flops Marilyn Helmer as with many fashion fads, the hobble skirt soon limped off into fashion history. Hold on, gentlemen! Before you toss this article aside as being strictly aimed at women, let s have a look at some of the strange fashions men have succumbed to. Although wigs were worn in ancient times, the big powdered version did not come into vogue until the 17 th century. It was introduced by King Louis XIII of France who was going bald, due to an unmentionable disease. At that time, a man s virility was associated with having a full head of hair. When an English monarch snidely drew attention to the king s balding pate, Louis took to wearing a wig. Of course, not just any old wig would do. And so, into the fashion world of the aristocrat, came the big powdered wig, occasionally adorned with feathers and frippery, bringing a whole new meaning to big hair. Crackows, a popular medieval shoe style, made it nigh unto impossible for a man to put his foot in his mouth. Distinguished by long, pointed toes, reaching lengths of 6 to 24 inches, crackows were introduced in Europe during the Crusades. The fashion spread and eventually got out of hand, or in this case, out of foot. The toes grew so long, they had to be stuffed with hay to keep their shape. The tips were held in place by thin chains connecting the toe to the wearer s knee. The style was popular among the wealthy but by the 1400s, most wearers had given it the boot. In the 1700s, men s attire went from the plain and simple to the elaborate and outlandish. Wealthy young English aristocrats, influenced by the flamboyant fashions in Italy and France, tossed aside tailored suits for jeweled and embroidered waistcoats and brightly coloured stockings. The accompanying wigs towered to new heights capped with tiny hats. Due to the young men s tastes for all things Italian, including pasta, they became known as the Macaronis. Their fame spread to America and is mentioned in the last line of the song, Yankee Doodle who stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni.

3 President s Message Glenn Bragg Well, is it hot enough yet!! Only a few months ago we were complaining about the cold now we are complaining about the heat. Oh well, only 5 months to go and it will be Christmas! As we are getting closer to September, your Board is hard at work putting all the information together for our A.G.M. It takes a lot of work to put this package together for all residents but we will have it all completed in the proper timeframe. As of our last Board meeting, it looked like we will have two openings on the Board for next year and have strong interest shown from 5 individuals who would consider being on the Board. This bodes well for the future of your Board. We have had very strong support from the residents in remitting their $40.00 annual contributions for the Board to operate effectively in To date, over 100 homes have sent in their cheques. Many thanks to our Treasurer for putting the reminders in all mail slots. Let s see if we can get a record number of supporters for the coming year! This past week-end, a large number of Pine Meadows residents attended the wedding of Don Sewell and Sue Wylie at the Shelburne Golf & Country Club. Yes it was a hot day but the beer was cold and the festivities were enjoyed by all who attended. It was great to see so many neighbours in attendance. That is all I have to report at this time. PMHA Minutes of Executive Board Meetings Kathy Munro, PMHA Secretary, The Board s Monthly Minutes, along with the Directors Reports, are published on the PMHA website ( A hard copy of the draft report is posted on the bulletin board in the meeting room at the centre. Please take time to read and perhaps get involved with the Board. Editor's Note: To locate the minutes and reports, go to the website ( and select the 'Meeting Minutes and Reports' item under the PMHA menu. This is a 'protected' page which requires you to enter the password 'ctyrd19' to access it. August 2016 Page 3 of 12

4 Maintenance Cost Review Committee (MCRC) Peggy Barton, Recording Secretary The Maintenance Cost report for the month of June unfortunately still has us in a shortfall position but we are confident that the next few months will bring us back into line with our budget. The full cost report as always is posted in the board room. I am sure that you have all seen all the new flower beds throughout the community. The cost to each home owner for the plants is minimal. The small cost per home will be charged in July with nothing going forward. These plants have been taken from other areas where they were very overgrown. They were dug up, divided into smaller pieces and now are being planted. The long term effect will be that the majority of the beds will have perennials and the need for annuals along with the associated costs will be reduced. There has been some work done on the tennis courts the decision was made to only do one side of the courts and see how the suggested repair will weather over the winter. One side of the courts have had the top coat removed and the lines for both tennis and pickle ball will be done shortly. We have had discussions with the maintenance team leader to understand why the grass is still being cut even though most of it is not growing. It was explained to us that the crew are only doing spot cutting those homes that have sprinkler systems need to have theirs cut each week and as for the rest of us, the blades are raised and they are just trying to keep the weeds from overtaking. As we all know grass needs rain however no matter what the weeds always seem to thrive. Any questions: Contact the Chair, Randy Cook, at Notice-PMHA 2016/2017 Board Elections - Update Nomination Forms are now available for the Board elections at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Pine Meadows Homeowners Association (PMHA) on September 21. 6 Canada Day Celebrations Pearl Davis, Social Chair Ninety-three people actually turned out to the Canada Day Celebration. The weather was kind to us and Terry Green, our photographer, was able to take several group pictures in front of the hall. Gary Helmer posted all the pictures that Terry took, on the website and also put two copies of the group pictures on the bulletin board. Copies are available for anyone who wants one. Thank you to both Terry and Gary. As usual, after the picture taking, everyone moved into the Grand Hall which looked very festive - decorated in red and white and Canadian flags. The singing of O Canada was led by Chris Beaumont. Elaine Boyes accompanied her on the keyboard. The singing of O Canada is done across the country every Canada Day. Thank you very much ladies. A printed trivia question about Canada was put on each table this year which they had to answer to get their food. Once again the residents showed how knowledgeable they were about their country. Well done!!! The delicious treats of cake, ice cream and local strawberries were enjoyed by everyone. A refreshing cold drink was also served. Thank you to everyone who supported the event and a big thank you to the Social Committee for their hard work. The lucky winners of the Share the Wealth were: Bryan Ross, Audrey Goulding and Bob Grimes. Congratulations! Thank you to Bud Davis for setting up the sound. Kudos to everyone who stayed to help clean up the room. Note from the Social Committee Pearl Davis, Social Chair Canada Day was an enjoyable day but I must point out that 121 people signed up for this event but only 93 people actually came. We buy and prepare the amount of food according to the number who sign up. For events where there is little or no charge we need and expect you to come if you sign up. We cannot afford to buy and prepare food for people who do not show. Our Website - a Volunteer Opportunity Are you a computer whiz, looking for a chance to design web pages and - and?? NO, you say?? Well that's great because this volunteer opportunity doesn't require you to even go near your computer!! We need two people, to work together, to organize our website Sponsorships. The setup is already in place but we need you to help us renew sponsorships and identify new sponsors. This activity usually takes place during the months of October and November. If interested, or for more information, please call: Paul Lingen at August 2016 Page 6 of 12

7 Dryer Vent Hose Rene Cowl, 190 PRR When our dryer vent hose started popping holes in it, and lint dropping out, we knew it had to be replaced. Our son came on the weekend to do the job for us. We were totally shocked to see the condition inside the hose and this picture was of the end of it, going into the outside vent. It was solid with grass and lint. There would be no way of knowing how badly it had built up, until the paper fabric started to rip. I empty the dryer filter after every use but all the build-up was at the outside vent. We thought we would pass on this information in case anyone is having the same problem. Editor's Note: The Cowl's experience reflects the concerns for dryer vent safety, which is the focus of the upcoming Koffee Klatch session (August 10) with the Dryer Vent Wizard. Thanks to all attendees for all the wonderful desserts and salads which helped to make our get together a huge success. All who came were more than happy to share the laughter, friendship, and delicious food. Yes, kudos to the team who dutifully compile, edit and review each issue - but we note that the real kudos go to the many residents who contribute content on a regular or ad hoc basis. That content is what 'makes' our newsletter. As good the Pine Line is, we believe it can be made even better! In an effort to further enhance your newsletter, we are asking you to help by providing new content. The criteria is simply content which will be of general interest to Pine Meadows residents; is non-commercial and reflects the activities and interests of our residents and retirement living. This might include an article reviewing your recent outings - to a restaurant, theatre, museum, sporting event or movie. Perhaps you could tell us about a good book you've read recently or a vacation trip you've taken or give a perspective on an activity right here in Pine Meadows. To express your interest or to discuss any details or concerns about getting involved, please contact: Our Team Coordinator: Paul Lingen, Team Member: Barbara Hodgson, Pine Meadows is an 'involved' community.
