1 ArtyFacts May 2015 Newsletter of the Huachuca Art Association, Inc Astro Street, Hereford, AZ, , Volume 46, Issue 5 ArtyFacts, (USPS LRR), monthly, P. O. Ann Loud, Jason Kidd and Michelle O Berry. President s Message Hi ho, Artyfolks, Liz Horning Well, Sunday, April 12 marked our last reception at the Mall, for the foreseeable future, and there was a very good turnout and a lot of nostalgia and mixed feelings. It was also perhaps the last chance for some of us to bid farewell to two of our members, Jim Kidd and Michelle O'Berry, who will not just be leaving the Gallery, but will be leaving town as well. Our best wishes to them both, wherever they may hang their hats in the future. And, on the subject of hat-hanging, as I write this, I can't really say for sure where we will be hanging ours a few months from now. We are still in negotiations on the building on SR 92. The inspection confirmed our suspicions about the roof, but we had already factored that into the budget. It also revealed some other issues, which taken one by one, are not such a big deal, but put all together could strain our budget a bit in the short term, especially if we want to get everything all done at once, before we move in. So at the moment, we are hoping to get a further price reduction from the seller. So, stay tuned. If this one doesn't work out, we'll find another. And on the subject of staying tuned, we have been getting some complaints that the membership at large has not been kept well enough informed about what the Board has been doing, especially regarding the building purchase. It's been about 6 weeks now since we first learned that our gallery space at the Mall had been leased to another party. Since then, a lot of decisions have had to be made, and a lot of special Board meetings have been held, most on pretty short notice. Most of those meetings have also been attended by interested members who are not on the Board, and that is as it should be, and as it is written in the by-laws. Always on the agenda for every regular monthly Board meeting, there is time allotted at the beginning of the meeting for what we call "members speak." 1 continued on page 3

Members Meetings Members' Meetings are held the third Saturday of the month, 10:00 am at the Astro Street Studio June-August No Demonstrations President s Message Liz Horning So if you are a member, and you have an issue you wish to bring before the Board, that would be the best time to do it. If you call or me ahead of time, we can put you on the agenda. Even if you don't give prior notice, if you show up at 1:00pm on meeting day, which is almost always the last Monday of the month, you will get to speak, and sit in on the rest of the meeting if you like. If you want to attend a special meeting, like the ones we have been having regarding the building purchase, you will need to ask a Board member to let you know whenever one is called, because we most likely won't know much ahead of time when any of those meetings might be happening. We can try to keep you updated in the Artyfacts, but that's only once a month, so it's not much good for breaking news. We do use our "Constant Contact" to keep members informed about special events, but past a certain point, it gets to be kind of like spam, and the more announcements that we make, the less likely people are to read them. However, with all that's going on these days, with a possible building purchase pending, we will send out a CC announcement as soon as we know for sure what's really going to happen. And by the way, at the risk of sounding too much like PBS, NPR, or the Nature Conservancy, should any of you be looking for a nice little tax deduction for next year, be advised, childbirth may not be necessary. A tax deductible contribution to the HAA Building Fund, would be a lot quicker, so much less painful, and possibly even, just as rewarding. Have a merry, merry month of May, everyone, Liz Horning, President Photo of Laureen McArdle courtesy John Marvin. continued from page 1 If you wish to do a monthly presentation or workshop please contact either Gabrielle LaFargue, ; or Carolyn Yeutter, June ArtyFacts deadline is Saturday, May 30 th. 5 From the Galleries April Member Demonstration Gabrielle LaFargue went over tools, supplies and reference that she uses in the art of calligraphy. Members were able to experiment with different nibs, inks and paper. April Paper Arts Stamping with Linda Langner. After a short discussion of the care and use of stamps, Linda Langner showed us how to make some very interesting cards using various stamps and inks, decorative papers and embellishments. Angus Bowie Wilson By Angel Rutherford Angus is one of the first members of the HAA when the association was founded. He just lately started to come back to the studio in Hereford and paint with our little group of artists after a long absence due to the bad health of his wife. Unfortunately he took a bad fall and in the moment has to be in the Life-Care Center for the recovery, and would love to see some visitors to break up the long boring days. Angus is one of my most admired Watercolor Artist, he is not only an amazing and generous person, he is a wonderful teacher and that one class of his I attended taught me a lot about art. Angus studied with Dale Boatman, and joined the HAA in 1970 and served as president of the association for two and a half years. Angus works in several mediums including watercolor, oil, acrylic, casein and pastels. His paintings hang in Scottish locations and all over the US, and several in my home here in lovely Sierra Vista. He has won numerous prizes, including Best of Show, at the Tubac Art Association, the Huachuca Art Association and the Tombstone Art Association. He has also given several workshops. In 2005 Angus Bowie Wilson received the well deserved Sierra Vista Mayor s Arts Award for featured Artist of the year. The Huachuca Art Association and myself wish Angus a speedy recovery, and we hope to see him soon back in the studio on Astro Street. 5

6 Member News Remembering Bob Best We were surprised and saddened to learn last month that Bob Best, another one of our fine artists, had passed away recently in Tucson. Bob was 78, and had been a long time participant in the drawing and painting sessions at the Astro St. Studio, where he took part as an artist, organizer, and model as well. Bob had a wonderful and vast collection of art books that he was always happy to share with other artists in the group, and now that he is gone, those books have been left to us, and will be added to the HAA library. While his personal passion was for depicting the human face and figure, he was also a great appreciator of a wide range of artistic expression, from Rembrandt to Rauschenberg, Da Vinci to DeKooning, Bellini to Beckman, Sargent, Picasso and Miro. All of that is reflected in the diversity of the books that he has left us. His own work was mostly portraiture, which he approached in a style that was contemporary and somewhat abstract, focused more on the design, color, form and values than on realistic detail. And, more than just depicting the lights and shadows that defined the forms, his work always appeared to be a struggle to get at the essence, you might even say, the soul, of his subject. Bob was a very soft spoken man, and he loved to talk about art, but seldom much about himself, so we don't know a lot about his personal history. We do know that he grew up in New York, lived at least for a while in Brooklyn, and took college classes in art and design in New York City, and later earned a BFA at the Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles. He lived for a long time in his home in Hereford that he had shared with his dog, Gus, a whippet that he had rescued from the racing circuit, and who was his constant, faithful companion. He was also a masterful gardener, who approached his plants and trees much as he did his art. Carol Reilley recalls him showing up at her house to prune her tree, arriving in long pants, shirt and Chinese "coolie " hat, brandishing an exceedingly sharp curved saw. He said that, in pruning trees, he liked to apply the artist's ''rule of threes". He believed that all our desert trees should have three separate and distinct trunks, so that the wind could pass through them without causing any harm. But the floods following the fires in 2011 mostly destroyed his property there. He lost his garden and the trees, too, and had to move to an apartment in town. As painful as it must have been for him in his last few years to have to move out of his home, living nearer to town did allow him to make contributions in other ways- as a supporter of a group that did therapeutic riding programs for seniors, and also as an aid counselor to Vietnam veterans, and that was something that he found rewarding and that he continued to do for the rest of his life. Our thanks go to Carol Reilly and Dianne Leudtke for sharing their reminiscences of Bob. We are grateful to him for leaving us his library, and thankful also to Laureen McArdle for delivering all those books, canvases, and equipment to the Astro St. studio. 6
