1 ArtyFacts August 2015 Newsletter of the Huachuca Art Association, Inc Astro Street, Hereford, AZ, , Volume 46, Issue 8 ArtyFacts, (USPS LRR), monthly, P. O. Box 748, Sierra Vista, AZ 85636, Periodical Postage Paid at Hereford POSTMASTER: Send address changes to ArtyFacts, P. O. Box 748, Sierra Vista, AZ THE THIRD ANNUAL GREAT ART QUOTES For this year's Great Art Quotes, we begin with some words of wisdom from this month's Featured Artist, Leonardo Da Vinci. Take it away, Leo! "Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art." "Painting, noun: The art of protecting flat surfaces from weather and exposing them to the critic." Ambrose Bierce "Color is my day-long obsession, joy and torment." Claude Monet "Painting is easy when you don't know how to do it, but very difficult when you do." Edgar Degas "Photography takes an instant out of time, and alters life by holding it still." Dorothea Lange "The creative act lasts but a brief moment, a lightning instant of give and take. Just long enough for you to trap the fleeting prey in your little box." Henri Cartier-Bresson "Great art picks up where nature ends." Marc Chagall "You can't do sketches enough. Sketch everything and keep your curiosity fresh." John Singer Sargent "A line is a dot that went for a walk." Paul Klee "A work of art is the unique result of a unique temperament." Oscar Wilde "I don't think there's an artist of any value who doesn't doubt what they're doing." Francis Ford Coppola "Art in itself is an attempt to bring order out of chaos." Stephen Sondheim "You begin with the possibilities of the material." Robert Rauschenberg "The history of modern art is also the history of the progressive loss of art's audience. Art has increasingly become the concern of the artists, and the bafflement of the public." Paul Gauguin "Good art is art that allows you to enter it from a variety of angles, and emerge with a variety of views." Mary Schmich "The best artists know what to leave out." Charles de Lint "The moment you cheat for the sake of beauty, you know you're an artist." David Hockney "An artist is somebody who produces things that people don't need to have." Andy Warhol "Every artist was at first an amateur." Ralph Waldo Emerson "Lesser artists borrow. Great artists steal." Igor Stravinsky " 'Crazy' is a term of art; 'insane' is a term of law. Remember that, and you will save yourself a lot of trouble." Hunter S. Thompson 1 If you would like to have one of your recent works displayed here on page 1, see the President's Message for further details

Since we have no featured artist for this month, we are conferring that honor on our old pal, Leonardo Da Vinci, who also is a contributor to our annual collection of GREAT ART QUOTES. But I thought it would be nice, in the coming few months, until we get our new gallery up and running, that we feature, on the front page of the ArtyFacts, the work of some more contemporary artists- namely, you guys. Especially if you have a piece that's new, one that you are really happy with, and something that we haven't all seen before. If you have something like that, me a picture of it, and we'll try include it on page one of the upcoming ArtyFacts. Regarding the new building, we are still in the planning stages, but we have moved ahead to the point where we have engaged an architect and a draftsman, and they have started to do the drawings upon which the contractors will be basing their bids, and which will be submitted to the City for our permit. So, more info on that later. With Art in the Park coming up in just a couple of months, we hope that any members (or non-members) who want to participate as vendors will get their applications in soon. The applications are available from the Artintheparksierravista.com website, which is up and running again, thanks to Chasity Seibert, after having recently been hacked. I believe there are still some spaces available in the Members' booth, but you should contact Trilby Arnold (arnotr59@aol.com ) soon, because they are very limited. We are starting to compile a list of volunteers to work the info booth, the parking lots, and help with the set up on Friday, October 2, and take down on October 4. And if you want to submit a design for the annual Art in the Park newspaper insert and poster contest, the prize is $75 and the deadline for that is August 15, so you'll really have to hustle. More info on that elsewhere in this ArtyFacts. Also, something new! This year the Pottery Studio at Oscar Yrun Community Center has set aside a time slot for any HAA members who would like to participate in the Empty Bowls project by creating their own bowls. More details on this elsewhere in this ArtyFacts. And again, our thanks go out to Les and Mary Stafford for hosting our annual HAA picnic. This years event was something of a miracle, in that, as it happened in the end, no waders or arks were necessary, and everything turned out to be just splendid. Happy rest of summer, everyone, Liz Horning, President President s Message Public Display Coordinators Huachuca Art Association Gallery Contact Edie Manion, Director HAA Gallery at or edieartist@cox.net August ArtyFacts deadline is Saturday, July 25 th 3 HAA Website Contact Chasity Seibert at or Chasity.seibert@gmail.com

5 Art in the Park News Call to Artists Art in the Park Insert Contest- $75 Prize It's time again for our annual contest to come up with a design for the cover of this year's Art in the Park SV Herald insert. This design will be used not only for the insert that appears in the paper on the weekend before the event, but it's also the one that will go on all of our posters and other Art in the Park advertising for We will be looking for something bright, bold, and beautiful that evokes the spirit of Art in the Park, and is adaptable to different formats, as the insert version will be square and the posters will be vertical. There will be lettering that says: The Huachuca Art Association presents the 44th Annual Art in the Park at Veterans' Memorial Park, Sierra Vista, AZ, October 3rd & 4th, 2015, plus there will be some other copy with details, like a listing of the different categories of merchandise for sale. While you might want to give some thought as to where the lettering might go, and maybe pencil it in on an overlay, do not waste a lot of time on that, as the art department at the Herald always redoes it anyway. What we are looking for is the design concept, something that shows the public what Art in the Park is all about, and lets people know that this is a special event not to be missed. The deadline for entries is August 15. You can either a photo of your submission to me at: Lhorningfa@q.com, or mail it to: Huachuca Art Association, P.O. Box 748, Sierra Vista, AZ If it is a digital drawing, it needs to be done at a large enough size and high enough resolution to be printed at an 11 x 17 size. If it is done in traditional media, it will have to be made available to be photographed or scanned. You can call me at: if you have any questions, or if you'd like to arrange to drop your entry off at the Astro St. Studio. Angel Rutherford at Art in the Park 2014 Bernita Barnfield at her booth. Photos courtesy Angel Rutherford. Keep Oct 3rd and 4th on your calendar for our 44th Art in the Park. We have a number of exciting new vendors who will be joining our favorite returning ones this year. If you are a member and are willing to help out, either on the days of the event or with some of the set up, take down, or the pre-event planning, please contact Liz at: Lhorningfa@q.com, or Lois at: Libravo@live.com 5
6 Member News HAA to make bowls for Empty Bowl Project Time is reserved on Wednesday, August 26 from 3:30 to 5:30 for HAA members to participate in making bowls for the local Empty Bowl Project. The workshop will be held at the Pottery Sierra Vista in the Oscar Yrun Community Center. Participants who know how to use a potters wheel can throw bowls, Others will be engaged in hand building. The Empty Bowls team has developed a simple slab building method that enables both inexperienced and experienced potters to produce very attractive ceramic bowls. Those who wish to create bowls using coil or pinch pot methods are welcome as well. Open to all levels of experience from never made a mud pie to professional potter. You will probably have time to complete two slab bowls. If you want to glaze your own bowls after bisque firing you can come to the Pottery Sierra Vista during any of its regular open studio hours. If you don't want to come back and glaze members of the Pottery Studio will glaze it. There is no charge to participate and all materials and tools are provided just bring your creative hands. If you like what you build you can make a minimum donation of $10 and keep your bowl. Others will go into the project. Empty Bowls goal this year is to raise $20,000 to be distributed to Cochise County Food Banks If you want to participate Liz Horning. We need a minimum of six participants and can handle up to 15 comfortably. Member, Karl Hallsten will be coordinating the workshop for the Pottery Studio. Photos from this years summer picnic.
