1 The Irondequoit Art Club October SAM s Snippets by Sheila ( S.A.M. ) Shrestha Blown Away by the Sands of Time. During the past few months, I was blessed with a blast from the past by way of two milestone reunions. The 1 st, in June 2017, was a celebration of the 100 th anniversary of the Eastman Dental Center (now Eastman Institute for Oral Health). I joined the dental center as a lab technician right after I graduated from Nazareth College and worked there until I retired as a Research Associate Professor in (My former teachers would consider that proof that miracles do happen). It was surreal connecting with folks, many of whom I hadn t seen for eons. It was fantastic but also strange. It seemed as if it was still yesterday, yet really not. The 2 nd, in September, was a milestone reunion of my graduation from Nazareth College. My class had a great turn out. The weather was fabulous. There were speakers, tours, food feasts, fireworks, dancing, a carnival complete with free rides, and lots of reminiscing. I remembered the old days when I was considered a dayhop, the term then used for commuters. There have been many changes. The college is now coed. There are many new structures on a much larger campus. (To my husband s delight, many of the kids shuttled us around using golf carts). New majors are being offered. Brand new science buildings house labs with the latest in technology. Many things have also remained the same. Still in place are the tunnels, underground connections for many of the key buildings. Students are still friendly and accommodating. The academic atmosphere is superb. Smyth Hall, once the home of my science classrooms, still stands strong and now supports other academic fields. Although new equipment & technology make life easier, use of more rustic stuff doesn t necessarily stop progress. In the olden days, we still managed to learn the basic science principles to apply later in life. My scientific idol, Marie Curie, worked under the most primitive conditions yet still discovered the element radium (and others) and revolutionized the fields of chemistry, physics and medicine. In my current life as a silk artist, my mind often travels back & forth from science to art. I remember that years ago, the late Dianne Dengel, internationallyfamous people artist, gave a demonstration to the IAC. She was able to complete a beautiful piece using paints and pieces of rolled up paper towel. When she began painting she was too poor to afford brushes so she learned that alternatives can also work. In reality, art comes from within and determined expression always finds a way. Heart makes the art. The sands of time can make us a little grittier, truer to ourselves, and unlike real sand, not so apt to blow away in the wind! A little tidbit: Some hobbyists, known as arenophiles, collect sand, which actually is intriguingly diverse. IAC Notes November Elections. Nominating Committee.
