4 Opiio A4 Thursday, NOVEMBER 29, 2018 CADY Corer How do I support a loved oe or fried usig drugs? BY DEB NARO Cotributor If someoe you care about has asked for help, he or she has take a importat first step. If that perso is resistat to help, see if you ca at least covice him or her to get a evaluatio from a doctor. You ca always take steps to locate a appropriate physicia or health professioal ad leave the iformatio with your fried. There are 3,500 board-certified physicias who specialize i addictio i the Uited States. The America Society of Addictio Medicie website has a Fid a Physicia feature o its home page. The America Academy of Addictio Psychiatry also has a Patiet Referral Program. Emphasize to your fried or loved oe that it takes a lot of courage to seek help for a substace use disorder because there is a lot of hard work ahead. There is a great deal of scietific evidece that treatmet works, ad people do recover every day. Like other chroic diseases, addictio ca be maaged successfully; ad like may diseases, it ca take several attempts at treatmet to fid the right approach. However, assure your fried or loved oe that you will be supportive i his or her courageous effort. My fried or loved oe has cosidered treatmet but is afraid what others will thik. May employers, frieds, ad family members will be compassioate if they see a perso is makig a sicere effort to recover from a substace use disorder. But you ca also reassure your fried that laws protect the privacy of a perso seekig drug treatmet or i fact, ay medical treatmet. Health care providers may ot share iformatio with ayoe else without a patiet s permissio. Some jobs may require a doctor's ote sayig a employee is beig treated for a medical coditio, but the ature of the coditio eed ot be specified. If my fried or loved oe refuses treatmet, should I itervee? May people are compelled to eter treatmet by the pressure of their family, frieds, or a court system. However, there is o evidece that cofrotatioal "itervetios" are effective at covicig people they have a problem or motivatig them to chage. Istead, you should focus o creatig icetives to at least get the perso to a doctor. Ofte people will liste to professioals rather tha have coversatios with frieds ad family members, as cofrotatioal ecouters ca sometimes be drive by fear, accusatios, ad emotios. Ca I explore treatmet ceters eve if my fried or loved oe is ot willig to go? Yes. If you fid ceters that might appeal to your fried, either by their locatio or medical approach, it might ecourage him or her to eter treatmet. Like may people, I thik, I was well ito adult life before I stopped takig these ad so may other facets of the great outdoors for grated. Eve ow, I m owhere early eough up o my birds, ad over the years have sought (ad ejoyed) kowledge from the likes of Pittsburg s Tom Carlso ad Columbia s David Killam. Wheever I had some questio ot covered by field guides ad research material at had, I could just pick up the phoe. As for butterflies ad other creatures with exoskeletos, I have a bit of a base from a eveig etomology course, way back whe I was livig i Machester, that I was lucky to take from the vauted Tom Fisher. He ofte broke ito sog right i the middle of a lesso, ad sometimes got us to sig alog. Thaks to him, I ca still toss phrases like third post-oral somite ito a coversatio. We seem to hear ad read more about birds ad butterflies durig witer, perhaps o the assumptio that we re all houseboud. But few of the media, periodicals, peer-reviewed publicatios, or popular press seem to have much to say about where these creatures go for the witer---or the horror story o what s happeig to the where of the Week Her perpetual smile is egagig, her eergy is ispirig ad her getleess a love. I m more tha a little weary of the fake ews topic, just as I thik a lot of us are tired of the too-easily flug politically correct. O that latter subject, however, I m more tha a little curious about what I ve perceived, from a steady diet of readig ad radio ad (whe I ca stad it) TV, is a dearth of coverage of the havoc beig wreaked o the Cetral ad South America witerig habitat for sogbirds, butterflies, ad a host of other creatures. I ca t help reachig some coclusios: (a) There is o shortage of milkweed i orther New Eglad except for places where what passes for progress has paved it over, (b) Our sogbird habitat does ot seem to have chaged all that dramatically, ad (c) The law-floutig destructio of Cetral ad South America forests is a absolute iteratioal disgrace Milkweed seems to do best aroud old fields ad pastures, aroud swamps, ad alog coutry roads. Norther New Eglad is losig its opeigs---the old term for fields ad pastures- --at a alarmig rate. Alog with losig opeigs comes losig views. As some old-timer advised me a log time ago, you ca t see a thig from uder 40 feet of trees. But i my book, it s mostly sheer developmet---where such places ed up broke up, bulldozed, built o ad mowed---that s spellig the gradual, largely urba ad suburba, loss of milkweed. Ad I thik that the destructio of the Moarch butterfly s witer habitat---the ed ad begiig of such a icredible migratio--- has far more to do with its sad declie tha our much more gradual loss of fields, pastures, ad coutry roads To my mid the woods have always bee full of bird sog, ad I ejoy watchig birds visitig my feeders. But I ve oticed a declie i bird sog i the woods, particularly over the past te or 15 years, ad the umbers at my feeders seem to be dow as well. Despite recet racor (ad resultat talkig-head hysteria), we are a atio that follows the rule of law. MARK ON THE MARKETS Expectatios BY MARK PATTERSON Wheever we ivest our moey i ay kid of ivestmet vehicle such as, stocks, bods, real estate or commodities, we typically have a expected retur plugged ito our brais based typically o past performace. I ca relate to you about my early years as a stockbroker i the middle 90s. If I had muicipal bods to offer, the yield to maturity was ofte betwee 4 ad 6 percet tax-free to the cliet. Depedig o the cliet s tax bracket, that could equate to a tax equivalet yield of eight or 10 percet. As a ew broker, I would call the fixed icome desk at my firm ad try to get ew issue muicipal bods held aside for me to garer ew cliets. The muicipal bod buyers were typically wealthier or mature cliets compared to the typical equity or stock ivestors. Whe I did ope a accout with that equity or stock cliet, I would discuss expectatios for returs i the market. Ofte times cliets would tell me that the expected retur was somewhere betwee 10 ad 20 percet. Certaily, the 20 percet expectatio was high, but the 10 percet retur expectatio was a miimum expectatio for those equity cliets. Mostly, the ivestor is usig a bechmark of returs from the past to form their expectatios of returs i the future. This is ofte times urealistic give iterest rates ad market returs over the last 15 years. Istead of bechmarks based o past market returs maybe we should thik about the ecessary retur eeded, that is reasoable i today s iterest rate eviromet that we require for our future icome. Betwee 1984 ad 1999 the S&P 500 retured early 18 percet per year icludig divideds. So my cliet back i 1995 who expected up to 20 percet was really just coditioed by what the markets were actual- ly returig. The ext 15 years, 2000 through 2015 the S&P 500 retured SEE MARKETS, PAGE A10 Paid Advertisemet Paid Advertisemet Paid Advertisemet Paid Advertisemet Paid Advertisemet What s goig o with the fiacial markets? Specifically, what s behid the price swigs of the past several weeks? Ad, more importat, how should you, as a idividual ivestor, respod? To begi with, the recet volatility was ot really all that extraordiary. The daily drops pushed U.S. stocks dow about 10% from their recet record highs, although they have regaied some of that groud. A 10% drop represets a correctio ot a crash ad historically, correctios have occurred about oce a year. So what seems to have caused these market jitters? Here are the key culprits: Edward Joes: Fiacial Focus How Should You Respod to Wild Swigs i Fiacial Markets? Aticipated slowdow i ecoomic growth ad corporate earigs. The stock market is forward-lookig ivestors make decisios based o what they thik will happe. Ad right ow, may ivestors are aticipatig a slowdow i ecoomic growth (partially due to higher tariffs ad trade disputes) ad corporate earigs (as the jolt from the corporate tax cuts begis to fade). We may still see reasoably strog ecoomic growth ad corporate profits, but possibly ot at the same level as we had for much of rates i While higher rates are ot bad for all market sectors, they ca slow the expasio plas for may busiesses, resultig i reduced growth prospects. The Fed may cotiue its gradual rate icreases, but ivestors are closely watchig for ay sigs that might lead the Fed either to pause or icrease rates more rapidly. Slowig global ecoomy The global ecoomy is growig more slowly tha expected, resultig i lower returs for iteratioal stocks ad a particularly sharp declie i emergig markets. stock market gyratios, you ll wat to focus primarily o what you ca cotrol. Cosider these suggestios: Keep realistic expectatios. Try to maitai realistic expectatios about how your ivestmets are likely to perform over time. After five years i which the S&P 500 s returs have averaged almost 14% per year, we may well be i for a period of more typical returs, possibly i the 5% to 6% rage. As always, though, there are o guaratees whe it comes to aticipatig the performace of the fiacial markets. From time to time, ad sometimes i respose to chagig market coditios, you may eed to chage the mix of ivestmets i your portfolio. So, for example, if higher market volatility makes you ucomfortable, you may wat to cosider addig bods or other fixed-icome vehicles, as these types of ivestmets ted to stabilize stock-heavy portfolios durig turbulet times. Do t get scared away from ivestig. You may ot like seeig multi-hudred-poit pluges i the Dow Joes Idustrial Average, but do t get scared off from ivestig. After all, recet stock market history has taught the value of patiece: If you had give up o ivestig i March 2009, at the market s low poit i the Great Recessio, you would have missed out o the 300 percet gais achieved before the curret roud of volatility. Of course, the market s past performace ca t guaratee what will happe ext. The fiacial markets will always fluctuate sometimes violetly. But as a ivestor, you should strive for calmess, patiece ad disciplie because these attributes ca help you look past today s headlies toward the future you evisio. New Hampshire has the Treatmet Locator at the followig lik: What is treatmet like? Everyoe eterig treatmet for a substace use disorder is uique. That is why the patiet ad the treatmet staff work together to develop a idividualized treatmet pla. What happes whe they eter treatmet ad drugs are take away? People of all ages with substace use disorders live i fear of what will happe if their drugs are take away. You ca assure the perso you care about that professioal treatmet ceters will keep him or her safe ad as comfortable as possible if a detoxificatio process is eeded. However, if someoe is usig a drug upo admissio to a treatmet program, oe of the first thigs eeded is to help safely remove the drugs from his or her system (ofte referred to as "detox"). This is importat, because drugs impair the metal abilities eeded to egage with ad stay i treatmet. Whe patiets first stop usig drugs, they ca experiece a variety of physical ad emotioal withdrawal symptoms, icludig depressio, axiety, ad other mood disorders; restlessess, ad sleeplessess. Remid your loved oe that treatmet ceters are very experieced i helpig patiets get through this process ad keepig them safe durig it. My fried or loved oe has bee i treatmet before will it work this time? This meas your fried or loved oe has already leared may of the skills eeded to recover from addictio ad should try it agai. The fear of relapse should ot get i the way of tryig treatmet agai. Treatmet of ay chroic disease ivolves chagig deeply imbedded behaviors, ad relapse sometimes goes with the territory it does t mea treatmet failed. How ca I support my fried or loved oe whe they go ito treatmet? This is a great coversatio to have with your fried's or loved oe s treatmet provider. Differet patiets eed differet levels of support. If there are difficult dyamics i a family group or set of frieds, the couselor may recommed little cotact for a while. It is importat to tell frieds strugglig with addictio that you admire their courage for tacklig this medical problem directly through treatmet ad that as they stick with the treatmet pla, you will offer ecouragemet ad support. Whe residetial treatmet is over, your fried will have to re-eter the commuity ad it will be a challegig time. There will be triggers everywhere that could promote a relapse. People with addictio eed to fight much of this struggle o their ow, without the help ad advice of frieds, usig the kowledge ad skills leared i treatmet. Offer love ad support as your fried cotiues to follow the treatmet pla. If he or she relapses, you should ecourage additioal treatmet. If you or someoe you kow struggle with addictio or substace abuse, call the New Hampshire Statewide Addictio Crisis Lie at for help. Markets FROM PAGE A7 a little over 4 percet, icludig divideds. Today, the yield o the 10-year ote is about 3 percet. I 1995, the yield o the 10 year ote was about six ad a half percet. If you are ivestig moey today, just thik about real returs i this iterest rate eviromet ad uderstad that the divided payig stocks are vulerable to market volatility based o the fact that may ivestors ad their advisors have chased yield ad have take, i my opiio, too much risk for that reward. A ivestmet grade corporate bod portfolio ca offer a yield of betwee four ad 5 percet. If structured properly your advisor should be able to immuize the portfolio agaist iterest rate risk. Whe the bod matures, a skilled asset maager should be able to re-allocate the moey back ito the portfolio, guided by the yield curve. I am ot ati-commo stock or equities; my itetios are to maximize returs ad miimize risk. The bod market is early twice the size of the stock market however, may ew cliets that I cosult with are primarily i stocks or equity, ad bod fuds that are perpetual by desig. I get it, stocks are much more excitig tha bods ad bod fuds that are fiacial advisor easy compared to structurig a real bod portfolio of idividual ivestmet grade corporate or muicipal securities. Research tells us that our brais chemically react three times greater whe we are gettig hurt i the markets as opposed to positive reactios i good times, so let s at least balace our portfolio ad mitigate risk by structurig a truly diversified portfolio that is crafted with covictio ad purpose. Sharpe sell-offs or elogated bear markets deplete our moetary ad emotioal capital. Mark Patterso is a advisor with M HP asset maagemet ad ca be reached at or Mark@MHP-asset.com. Graft ad corruptio remai rampat, ad oe ca hack away with abado. Why is this so seldom metioed? What s with all this tip-toeig aroud? Part of it, I thik, is that obody wats to be see as beatig up o a Third World atio. Wait---ca t call them that. Developig world? Nope, that suggests that ay ad all developmet is good, a syoym for progress. Okay, maybe the curretly popular emergig atio, which somehow remids me of (guess what?) butterflies. 11 Newfoud Ladig Sports Sectio A Thursday, November 29, 2018 Williams takes helm for Newfoud hoop girls BY JOSHUA SPAULDING Sports Editor BRISTOL With oly two graduatio losses, the Newfoud girls hoop team would appear to be i a good spot as the Divisio III seaso kicks off. I did a little summer league, so there s a lot of familiar faces i the gym, so I had that goig for me, Williams said. The team has just two seiors, both of whom have varsity experiece, but the majority of the roster is limited i that regard. There s ot really a lot of experiece, Williams said. But it s ot where we start, it s where we fiish. It s really importat for this team to keep that i perspective. Williams said the goal is to fiish.500 or above ad the peak as the playoffs roll aroud.
