Although the holiday laded o Wedesday ad busiess has slowed i recet years because of dry weather, there was still plety of excitemet o the Chehalis Reservatio. Each year, tribal members, spouses ad childre ages 14 ad older set up stads o the reservatio. Ad for three weeks, thousads of people shop at Native America-owed busiesses spread out both up ad dow the hill o Aderso Road ad the few still dow o Moo Road. Chehalis Caoe Family kicks off aual jourey By Frazier Myer The Chehalis Caoe Family welcomed the tribal commuity to the 2018 Caoe Jourey Lauch Celebratio o July 10 at Percy s Ladig, oe of the tribe s historic sites o the baks of the Chehalis River. The traquil spot is amed i hoor of previous Chairma ad highly regarded tribal member Percy Youckto. Historic Preservatios Officer Da Pe explaied how Percy helped the tribe get out of some rough times. FIREWORKS From page 1 their trucks. Whe previous Chehalis Tribe Chairma Percy Youckto established a fireworks ordiace, people bega costructig stads to operate busiesses from. I the begiig, there were 15 fireworks stads that evetually grew to more tha 100 stads. To create a large customer base ad grow each seaso, stad owers became savvy busiess people ad used various forms of advertisig. They came up with creative ames ad paited their stads vibrat colors, put out flyers ad eve ra ads o local radio statios. For the most part, stad owers relied o word of mouth ad that customer satisfactio would keep people comig back. May tribal members realized havig a fireworks stad is expesive ad a lot of hard work, but it ca be worth it if you cotiue to build clietele. Repeat customers are istrumetal i the success of the fireworks busiess. Kowig how to make deals ad sedig customers home happy also helps the flow of fireworks sales. I recet years, the umber of stads has decreased. There were roughly 70 stads this year, but the busiess has become more family orieted ad Festive fireworks are loaded oto a pickup truck. workers are utilizig the advacemet of techology to their beefit. May busiesses advertise through social media ad ow accept credit or debit card paymets from smart phoes. Out of eight wholesale distributors, two are local tribal member wholesale busiesses. He has helped put o the big fireworks extravagaza at the softball fields o the Fourth of July. The show is oe of the tribe s mai attractios. It brigs i hudreds of people from aroud the regio to witess the Chehalis Tribe light up the sky with 320 salutes. Caales said he wishes to thak Chehalis Tribe Chairma Harry Pickerell Sr. for allowig the tribe to purchase the machie ad equipmet to make the show possible. 3 3 Parades get royal touch The 2018 Chehalis Tribal Royalty is actively dedicatig their time by represetig the tribe at various evets durig their first couple moths as royalty. Swede Day Parade The Chehalis Tribal Royalty cotiued their aual traditio of participatig i Rochester s Swede Day Parade o Jue 16. Dressed i Native America regalia, the group traveled the streets of Rochester i the Chehalis Caoe Family s caoe. The youth tossed out cady to excited kids while smilig ad wavig to crowds liig the streets. The Evets Departmet, families ad youg royalty members helped make this year s evet possible. The tribal royalty eve took home a secod-place ribbo for their participatio i the float competitio. Oakville celebrates With a populatio of less tha 700, the tow of Oakville is usually pretty quiet. However, the Fourth of July Parade o July 7 provided festive exhilaratio. The Chehalis Tribal Police departmet escorted the Chehalis Tribal Royalty. Agai, they made themselves at home iside the caoe Tulap o the parade route. Margaret Shortma pulled the caoe i her pik ad black Tita pickup truck. The royalty committee tossed cady ad waved to the crowd i traditioal parade fashio while the Chehalis Caoe Family followed o foot sigig ad drummig. For oe of the royalty members, it was the very first parade! Elder Hele Saders was selected as the Grad Marshall, ad she led the parade i a sleek Corvette. This was t the oly stylish car i tow as a car show featured shiy rides. The afteroo was complete with a rodeo, horse rides ad vedors sellig arts ad crafts. Aderso Road ad Moo Road both have had a sigificat umber of accidets, icludig fatalities i recet years. This project is desiged to make the stretch of Highway 12 safer for all travelers. How log will costructio take? The project will kick off March 2019 ad wrap up i October. Who is payig for costructio? WSDOT is fudig the project. The tribe is ot resposible for costs. Will large trucks be able to use the roudabouts? Yes. The roudabouts are desiged to accommodate vehicles of all sizes, icludig emergecy vehicles, buses, farm equipmet ad semi-trucks with trailers. Is the tribe ivolved i desig of the roudabouts? Yes, we are workig with WSDOT to esure the tribe is represeted ad it is clear drivers have etered the territory of the Cofederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservatio. Traied staff will assess your home or your loved oe s home ad discuss how to lower or elimiate your risks. We will reach out to those at risk, but you also call the Welless Ceter to request a home visit for yourself or a loved oe. Dr. Deborah Behre, podiatrist at the Welless Ceter, is passioate about this program ad the eed to implemet it i our commuity. Statistics show that every secod of every day, a adult age 65 or older falls. Every 20 miutes, a older adult dies from a fall. Oe i every five falls is serious for a older adult ad results i traumatic brai ijury, fracture or death. Studets haress the power of ature to make healig balm. Families were pleased to hear from Oakville School District Superitedet Rich Staley ad Rochester Primary School Pricipal Amy Roey, who both gave ispirig speeches to the graduatig class about their upcomig educatioal jourey. Special recogitio awards were haded out to dedicated idividuals who cotributed to the success of the school year. Wedy Vasques was recogized for most voluteer hours for the program year. Wedy put i more tha 200 hours of time. Commuity Resource Officer Jake Dickerso received a thuderous applause whe his ame was aouced. He was give a siged poster from Early Learig staff ad graduatig childre that recogized ad thaked him for beig a positive role model ad for his huge cotributio to the program. After diplomas were haded out, it was a woderful momet of accomplishmet as childre stood up together ad tured their tassels from the left to the right. This sigified they are ow takig their ext step to kidergarte. They were cogratulated with a roarig applause. Families were give time to capture the memories with photos. After the blessig, elders were ivited to dish up their meals. It was a huge feast fit for the occasio. The aual gatherig is hosted by the Chehalis Tribal Early Learig Program, which provides families the opportuity to celebrate Father s Day with a fu day of fishig. I late 2016, I reached out to Feces for Fido to discuss a way to collaborate. At that time, they were ot doig much i the South Soud regio. Fast forward to a ew year whe I talked with Becky Reavis, who was the coordiator for the ewly formed Feces For Fido Southwest Regioal Chapter. The coversatio led to a dream come true for two lucky pets. Aroud the time I recoected with Feces For Fido, I spoke with a residet who lives o Sickma Loop. The residet had also reached out to Feces For Fido so the timig was perfect. I April, orgaizatio came out to assess the property ad set Jue 3 as the date of the build. Feces For Fido metioed that two feces were just as easy as buildig oe, so by the followig week, two dogs were gettig feces! Feces for Fido is a oprofit orgaizatio that doates about 100 feet of fecig. The fecig is iteded for dogs livig o chais or i small eclosures. Each fece ad doghouse they provide costs about $1,000 i materials; labor is voluteer-based. Feces For Fido is fuded through doatios ad grats. They have specific criteria for feces that they doate. It is ot for pet owers who simply wat a fece. At 10 a.m. Jue 3, costructio of the fece for local dog Tak bega. The Feces for Fido program brought a group of voluteers. Sgt. Jake Dickerso, Jackie Dickerso, Crime Victims Advocate Holli Gomes ad I were also ready to get our hads dirty. After a busy morig, voluteers worked up a appetite ad ejoyed a light meal to re-eergize for the afteroo project at the ext residece. The crew moved to aother residece o Sickma Loop to assemble a fece for Griffi. After completig each structure, the dogs were itroduced to their ew homes. It was great to witess the dogs zoom everywhere as they ejoyed ewfoud freedom. It was a fu day!
