1 March 2O15 Have story, will tell One afternoon last year I spent some time going through ADSO archives looking for information that I was hoping would shed some light on some past events. My search took me through many old and fragile, yellowing documents, handwritten notes, correspondence and photos. I did not find what I was looking for but ended up connecting with something much more valuable. A half hour quickly turned into one, then two, then three. I came to realize how much has changed in the life of ADSO and more importantly, how much has not. The early years and the pursuing six decades in the colorful and fascinating history of ADSO is a story to which and in which we all are connected to each other through the same hopes and dreams, achievements and successes, the same struggles and uncertainties. It is our story, it is history repeating itself. It would be a great injustice to assume the past is in the past and quietly resting tucked away. ADSO was built on a foundation stone of ideas and aspirations that are as relevant today as they were then, over half a century ago. Each new generation that shapes ADSO, writes their own chapter, as they should. The aspirations of the ADSO pioneers endure in the many traditions we still maintain and honor today. We all have a story; the story of who we are, where we come from, and where we belong. The one special chapter for which, to most of us, no other chapter in our lives quite compares, is the where we come from. It is the one chapter we find ourselves going back to for all our lives. It is a place for reassurance, for comfort and security. It is where your questions find answers, and your doubts are blown away. During that quiet afternoon in ADSO archives I did not only find those but I found the reason, and I saw the future, and, above all, I found the sense of indebtedness to those who came before us. 5 We Need You! Jeremy Bacon, President, Photography Group The ADSO Photography Group meets the third Wednesday of every month in the Gallery from 7 9 PM. The meeting starts with a presentation of a photographic topic of interest, a question and answer period, and then ADSO members show and discuss photographs they bring for comment and questions from other members. This show-and-tell period is a great learning experience for everyone, as we review and learn from the current photographic projects and interests of our fellow ADSO members. The Photography Group needs more members. Many of you who are artists are also photographers. We need you in the group. We have ADSO members who are entering and winning ADSO photo competitions, but we never see you. We need you in the group! Just as ADSO artists learn and polish their skills from interaction with other artists, we photographers need to do the same thing. And we need YOU to make this possible. Let us know what you would like to see in the Photography Group, and what day you think we should meet if Wednesday is not suitable. Please forward your suggestions to Jeremy Bacon at jeremy.bacon@gmail.com. A paperless society! Note that this year, ADSO, in its march towards fiscal responsibility and a greener world, will make the Membership Directory available online for the membership, as opposed to printing it. Meantime, please renew your membership, if you haven't already, so you can be included in our list! Vacant windows! We need artists to display their works in our Window Gallery in October, November, and December! Please contact Helen Harris (hch45@cox.net, ) if you would like to be our featured Artist of one of those Months! This information is always featured in Showcase, in the Daily News! Thanks to Our Gallery Sitters! Many thanks go to our February Gallery sitters, Iris Brown, Tuny Jennings, Dan Robison, and Jim Thoreen, for donating three hours of their time, to keep the Gallery open on Saturday. Without our volunteer sitters, the Gallery would be closed on Saturdays. If you've not spent a Saturday afternoon (1-4) in the Gallery, please consider giving it a try. It's a pleasant way to spend an afternoon--read, work on your art, or do crossword puzzles...and represent ADSO to any visitors. Sometimes it's busy, sometimes, not. You may answer questions, give out ADSO literature, or just smile and say, "Thanks for visiting!" Three hours once in a while isn't a big chunk of time--but it makes a big difference to ADSO. Please sign up! Sixty Years Young and Still Growing and Glowing! In 2016, ADSO will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary. Such a special event requires a special celebration, and it's not too early to start planning. We need a work group! Anyone interested in helping to plan this celebration, please contact Hanna Joensuu at hanna222@cox.net or
