March President s Message Bluebonnet Chapter of SDP Celebrating 44Years Connie s Comments Did I miss winter? Last night I had a social engagement that required sequins. Expecting at least moderate coolness, (and having packed away summer clothes) I had only planned one outfit. It included three WARM coordinated layers, topped by a matching sequin-covered woolly knit coat. There were no other options. Do you know how much fun heatretaining clothes are on an 87 degree day? Seriously, I only recall 2 cool days and I was still debating whether or not to cover the plants when they ended. Even though I m writing in the first half of February due to the copy deadline, my spring plants are up and blooming and dandelions abound. Really, did I miss winter? So, is it global warming or the heat coming from all of those busy brushes? If you missed the January Paint-In, check Maria s column for contest details. I was thrilled with the energy, record production and visiting that occurred. We have some fantastic programs planned for this year, great one-day fund raiser projects and our upcoming Kathie George Seminar you won t want to miss. If you haven t painted with her before, or the projects look too challenging, sign up anyway. You will go home with great pieces that were far easier to paint than you would expect and you will learn new techniques. The Painting Palooza class catalog is out and I can hardly wait for October. I hope each of you will support our industry by attending at least one convention this year whether it be SDP, Las Vegas, Ohio or one of the other regional events. Remember our industry will only remain strong if we support it and actively recruit/ teach new painters. Happy winter? Or Spring? 2 Page 2 ART SHOW OPPORTUNITY!! The Wide Spectrum Art Group has offered us an opportunity to still have a "mini" art show. They are offering us the glass case in the art room from April 3-May 25. The board enthusiastically agreed to give it a try. Here is what I will need: 1 piece per person-so more people have a chance in such a small space, State Fair quality and most important as Unique as possible!! Not too big. I can adjust the shelves, some but want to get as many pieces as possible without being over full! If I get more than enough to fill the case I will re-do the display at the end of April with new stuff!! Please bring your item to the March meeting. This should be perfect for the kinds of things we love to paint! Yea and thanks to the Wide Spectrum Group for their generosity! Diana Christmas Party Yes it's time to prepare for the Bluebonnet 2017 " If The Hat Fits" Christmas Party. We will have our usual ornament exchange, ornaments are on sale for $1.00. We will have our fun raffle. Since we will not have a gift exchange this will give you more time to paint for the raffle. Home baked items like cookies, candy, or a cake would be a great raffle item. There will also be a silent auction. When you come in make sure you sign in for a drawing for a table centerpiece. We will also have special fun drawing. The paint- in's would be a great time to paint raffle items If you would like to help with the party, we will have a meeting after the March meeting stay and help and have fun. Any questions call, Bonnie Riley

Page 3 March Worklshop If you have ordered a surface it will be preped and ready for you to put your pattern on. So, bring it traced. If you can't remember, don't worry I will have the list, extras of surfaces and the specialty brush I am using. (Scharff Touch-It #6) Bring your regular painting supplies-plus: Paper towels (I prefer Bounty and I'll explain why) and a Chalk pencil The only brushes you should need are #3 round or 6 filbert-your choice, for basecoating, 1/2" flat or angle for floating, 6/0 & 10/0 liners Remember this is a Technique class on Dry Brushing, antiquing and freehand borders and we'll talk about strokes This design can be put on just about any surface plus it is not time consuming-so start digging in your stash for more surfaces and start your Christmas presents!! The paint will be provided but here is the palette so you can either finish at home or plan to paint many more! You may pick which color palette you prefer-i'll be teaching both DecoArt-Americana Black Black Plum Brilliant Red Cadmium Red Celery Light Buttermilk Napa Plantation Pine Rookwood Santa Red Yellow Light This is a fast and elegant piece with a lot of valuable technique!

Page 4 Paint-Ins Hello Painters! Here we are, already in the middle of tax season. Is anyone else stressed-out? Well, Keep Calm & Paint. March 22, 2017 is the 4th Thursday Paint-In. It is a great time to paint, to spend part of the day with friends, to share ideas, and keep each other updated about our lives. Laughter is part of the day. What ever you want to do can be done at the paint-in. Want to start a new project, finish one or look though books to see what might be next on your agenda? It is your day to think, plan or do. We normally paint from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM but the doors open at 8:AM and we have the room until 5:00 PM. Make your own hours. What ever fits into your schedule is perfect. We pay $5.00 each, which goes to the rental of the room. Normally Bonnie and other ladies bring goodies. We order out for lunch or you can bring your own. We have a contest at the 4th Thursday Paint-In. It is an opportunity to finish projects started and have not been completed. There are a few rules which are available at the Paint-ins. There is a $50.00 prize for the member who completes the most projects. If you would like, I can send you a list of the rules upon request to <Cimaca2@aol.com>. Pat Hooper is the contact person if you would like to join in the fun. So far, close to 40 UFOs have been completed (except for varnishing) by different members. Looking forward to seeing you there. Treasurer s Report Budget will be sent out by . Please read it and come to the meeting ready to vote on it. Bluebonnet Bouquets Please let me know if a member needs a card and cheering up. Bluebonnet Boosters Chairperson, Vera Hudnall

January 12 Minutes Page 7 The meeting was held at the Bob Duncan Community Center in Arlington and was called to order at 1:15p.m. by President Connie Alexander. The secretary was present. Announcements: We were informed that classes in balance are offered at many hospitals at no cost. Vice-President/Programs: Programs for the year were announced as follows: March is a stroke class by Diana Pfau, May is tulips by Nancy Genetti, July is Meals on Wheels, Sept is Halloween shoes by Jana Reynolds, November is Christmas shoes by Pat Hooper, and January is a candle stick. We will be discontinuing our art show or perhaps just use the glass case. The State Fair ladies will be coming to our March meeting. Vice-President/Membership: dues are due now ($20.00). 37 members have paid. Maria Persuitte would like to be informed if there are any changes in membership information. Minutes: The November minutes were approved as printed. Christmas Party: The theme is If The Hat Fits. The ornaments are a top hat and will be sold for $1.00. We will have no gift exchange this year but will have a silent auction. We will have no annual raffle but will encourage members to contribute raffles at the party. The first committee meeting will be at the end of the March meeting. Community Service/Meals on Wheels: We have painted ornaments which have been donated so our only contribution is to write something on them. Extra time will be used to paint memory boxes. Community Service/Memory Boxes: HEB hospital needs boxes and they prefer smaller boxes. They will be brought to the next meeting. Hospitality: Libby Conant was thanked for lunch. She asked for ideas and recipes for future lunches. Newsletter: The deadline is the next board meeting. Paint-Ins: The next paint-in is January 26. We will have an optional contest which is to bring unfinished projects and a prize will be given to the person who completes the most projects. It needs to be finished at the paint-in. Guests are welcome to come to the paint-ins at the usual $5.00 cost. Connie Alexander said she would teach them to paint. Publicity: We will no longer decorate libraries for Decorative Painting Month. Our publicity will be through Face Book. State Fair: Rules were discussed. Seminars: Kathie George will teach a seminar in March. The cost is $ for both days. Diana Phau is taking sign-ups and money today. Ways and Means: We will have three fundraisers. The first one is April 27 taught by Jana Reynolds. She is taking sign-ups today. The project is a rain deer on a board with a stand at a price of $ Other fundraisers will be a watermelon Lazy- Susan in July by Bonnie Riley and a bowl in September. New Business: June Weddle is teaching art classes at the nursing home where she lives. Pat Hooper asked us to donate supplies for her classes. She will see that she gets them. 11 Page 11 Ways and Means Fund Raiser For those who didn t make it to the meeting the chapter has changed things a little bit and hopefully it will make things easier for all of us. The chapter has decided to do away with the annual Christmas raffle. We all contributed twenty five dollars and only one person won the beautiful raffle. We still need to bring in funds so we started a couple years ago doing Fundraisers. This is where we pay only twenty five dollars and everyone walks away with a beautiful piece and the funds go to the chapter. This year we will have three fund raisers. They will be taught by three different teachers. The purpose is to raise funds for the chapter so whatever is being taught can be painted on the surface of your choice. If you don t like the piece you may still attend but still have to pay twenty five dollars that day and sit at back of the room and quietly to paint whatever you choose. Our first fundraiser is April 27 th where Jana Reynolds will be teaching a piece by Chris Haughey called Reindeer Joy. You can sign up with Jana Reynolds and also purchase a wood surface if you choose from Jana Reynolds. The surface is $12.00 and there is a lot of prep works so don t wait to long to get started. Our next fundraiser will be July 27 th. This class will be taught by Bonnie Railey and will be a Watermelon on a Lazy Susan. Then we will have one more on Sept. 28 th taught by Diana Pfau and it will be a Fantasy Bowl. Please come and suppose your chapter, it will be a lot of fun. If you have any questions or would like to sign up for any of these classes please contact Jana Reynolds. Date is Thursday April 27 from 9 4 Taught by Jana Reynolds. The fee is $25. Cost of the wood is $12, however it may be painted on any surface of your choice. Contact Jana at jsrmay54@sbcglobal.net if you are interested in taking the class. She also has the wood. Fee does not include lunch. Libby will be serving lunch $6.00.

Seminars Page 12 Kathie George Friday March 17 & Saturday March 18 9:00-4:30 - Bob Duncan Community Center S. Center Kathie and I have the details worked out and it is going to be great fun!!! Here is a refresher on what preparation you need to have done! Friday we will paint the Batik. You only have to put your pattern on the provided rice paper. Be sure to use ONLY a PERMANENT-WATERPROOF pen. Recommended brands-micron-zig -Pitt Pen. NO Sharpies! Your pattern will disappear if your don't use the correct pen. WHAT TO BRING: FRIDAY Your regular painting supplies waxed paper--paper towels--1 1/2" flat brush plus watercolor brushes (which I don't have-so Kathie said acrylic good, maybe new, brushes will work) Kathie will loan us brushes for the wax application. Need a few hairdryers, so bring one if you have it. Also need a couple of irons-who does that-right? Let me know if you can help. SATURDAY-Exploring Texture In her instructions Kathie says to tape your line drawing to a sunny window, then place your paper over it and trace your pattern on. That's it-come to class. Cut the sheet of watercolor you were given in half forming two 12 X18" sheets. Then trim off 2" from the 18" side giving you two-12x16 sheets. Save your trimmings for color testing.
