6 EDITOR S LETTER I recently bumped into art dealer and curator Warren Siebrits at the till of Exclusive Books. Warren, clutching a recent Byredo purchase from 2A, and I, holding a stack of just-bought magazines, found ourselves caught up in an impassioned conversation about his latest project: the Jack Ginsberg collection of Walter Battiss at WAM. The conversation soon turned to the local art scene and Warren shared an optimistic view, noting how exciting it is that South Africans are showing so much interest in exhibitions and shows. This once-confined scene has evolved to become more inclusive with the introduction of an increasing number of fringe fairs and the launch of niche galleries. Larger local galleries are also increasing their footprint by opening international spaces, such as Joburg s popular Kalashnikovv, which has extended its arm to Berlin, and Circa, which opened up in London in late For me, the art world is still relatively abstract and alien. My understanding is informed by exhibitions, articles and the opinions of people who studied it and are in the know. I ve learned that it s about engaging with gallery owners and curators on your interests, navigating your way through the body of work to really understand your taste, and starting to piece together your own collection if you re interested in collecting in that way, that is. The few pieces of South African art I have, I bought in the moment because I liked them, and at this moment, I would really like to own a portrait from Ian Grose at Stevenson Gallery, a paper wall panel by Michael MacGarry from Everard Read, a carved chair from Cameron Platter and an embroidered piece by Kimathi Mafafo. Inside this month s edition, you ll find the creative spaces of painters and sculptors, curators and collectors (page 37). Roelof Petrus van Wyk, the creative director of the Keyes Art Mile, says the inspiration for his glass-and-steel home in Parktown West (page 50) was a pylon that fell over. It s a bit like a sculpture that I live in. Work by artists such as Nico Krijno and Wim Botha give the place a jolt of truly South African energy. We also feature a Spanish gallery owner s eclectic abode (page 60), filled with a combination of traditional and contemporary items, showing that heirloom pieces and modern art make for the perfect mix. My very first, and still favourite, artwork was a Robert Hamblin piece. Today I can t afford his work anymore, but he remains a favourite. I m fortunate enough to have been to a few on my list, but would love to spend another few days in the MoMA. I ve also always wanted to go to Kröller-Müller, an art museum and sculpture park in the Netherlands, and to the Saatchi Gallery in London. What artwork would you love to own? Owning a Gregor Jenkin dining-room table has been on my list for as long as I can remember. And, with my moody Gregor Jenkin, a large Lionel Smit in blue would complete the dream. MILA CREWE-BROWN is a Joburg-based writer with a weak spot for all things design. She has training in interior design and visual art history, but most of all she loves delivering a good story (see page 30). Who are some of your favourite local artists? Skullboy, Paul Senyol and my mum, Jacqueline Crewe- Brown. And international? Lakin Ogunbanwo, Odili Donald Odita and Guido Mocafico for his Serpens series. Dream galleries you d like to visit? Artist Tony Gum (pronounced goom ) has changed something as simple as taking a picture of yourself and transformed it into high art. Under her creative direction, her self-portraits are mostly captured using her cellphone, along with carefully selected props and seemingly elementary makeup in primary colours. This form of expression became a way for the young artist to find her own voice and space in the art world. From playing around with a crate of empty Coca-Cola bottles to portraits of herself reimagined as Frida Kahlo in her artwork Free Da Gum, Tony has creatives sitting up and watching her every post for inspiration and potential projects. Essentially, she s become the name she is today by turning herself into the main subject of her content, cleverly filling her corner of the digital world with her work and as a result positively influencing how many young African artists present and perceive themselves. You only need to cast an eye over her thoughtfully colour-curated Instagram account (tony_gum) to see why. In this exclusive series of portraits with House and Leisure, Tony was inspired by Pablo Picasso but we wanted to give it a bit of an African-esque feel she says, while also being shaped by an uncompromising palette of yellow, red, black and green. This year has been a big one for the self-portraitist, who views the world of interiors as an art form in itself, and is always open to exploring different aspects of her creativity. While still enjoying the demands of being a second-year film student, Tony got to speak at this year s Design Indaba Conference and was the only African artist at the Pulse Contemporary Art Fair in New York, where she presented her first solo exhibition earlier this year. But she s not letting all the attention go to her head and says she wants to carry on producing work. I am taking it one step at a time and enjoying every step of the way. I m really grateful for all the opportunities but realise that I need to focus on the work. For her next project, she wants to go back to the Eastern Cape, where her father is from, and learn more about Xhosa traditions.
