CPPG COLORED PENCIL POINTS VOL. 7 ISSUE 4 1 CPPG Colored Pencil Points APRIL 2018: THE VILLAGES, FLORIDA VOLUME 7 ISSUE 4 President s Message Our 2018 Jubilee Show and Sale has come and gone, and the results were fantastic. On behalf of the membership, I want to extend a great big thanks to Amy Ottilige for taking the lead, and to the many committee members, artists, and volunteers who made this event a big success. Great team work all the way around! I was so pleased to see so many entries in this year s EAE (Emerging Artists Exhibit) which took place during our March monthly meeting. The number of entries surpasses previous years, and the quality of the work was great. Many of the paintings were completed by past and current students of our Guild s teachers: Nan Klein, Pam Young, Jan Jones, Sue Franz, and Frank Zampardi. We are so lucky to have them, and we are grateful to them for the time they give of themselves to help us out. In November of 2014 we established a program that would go hand in hand with the EAE and the Lake Miona Judged Shows. The purpose of the program was to encourage our newer colored pencil artists who participated in the EAE, to enter their work in a Lake Miona Judged Show as their very first Judged Show. With that in mind, we created a special award, the CPPG Artistic Advancement Certificate. I am in the process of updating our database, and

CPPG COLORED PENCIL POINTS VOL. 7 ISSUE 4 2 any awards that have not been given out to members who qualified, will be given out at our April Meeting. The rules to qualify for this certificate will be posted on our website, as well as within the pages of this edition of Pencil Points. May is fast approaching.time to start thinking about the change-over of exhibits at Rohan, and the upcoming Lake Miona Miniature Judged Show and reception. I hope to see many of you at our April 11 monthly meeting. Please don t forget to bring a piece that you are currently working on, or have just finished, to share during the round table critique. You are the program! To our seasonal members who have already gone north, have a great summer, and we are looking forward to seeing you again in the fall. Happy Painting, Renee Featured Member Art Art Whimsy by Doreé Voychick Doesn t the opening picture make you think of spring? Doreé Voychick is our featured Artist of the Month. She is wellknown as one of our very talented instructors in colored pencil art. Other examples of Doreé s art are below. Don t forget to submit some of your art to Jane Routte, editor, at routtejane88@gmail.com. We want to have everyone represented as an Artist of the Month in CPPG Pencil Points. Please submit anything that has not already won a ribbon. Top: Attraction of Red, And the Three Bears Bottom: Best Friends Forever, Into the Woods Front Picture: Le Papillion.

CPPG COLORED PENCIL POINTS VOL. 7 ISSUE 4 3 Emerging Artists are the Butterflies of CPPG Our March CPPG meeting celebrated the Emerging Artists among us. The new artists displayed works which demonstrated great skill and beauty. The voting was so close that the exhibit ended up with five winners instead of three. There was a three-way tie for third place. First place went to Jane Stankewicz for her portrait Grandson (center picture). Second place was awarded to Julia Allen for Mady, the Scientist (top left). Mary Tougas was awarded third place for Bluebirds (bottom left). Another third place ribbon went to Christine Kirsch for Max s Eyes of Love (top right). The other third place went to Cathy Stone for Teddy (bottom right). Winners of this exhibit should check out the CPPG Artistic Advancement Certificate later in this newsletter. Connie Chandler presented the awards. Congratulations to all of the Emerging Artists who participated in the Exhibit.

CPPG COLORED PENCIL POINTS VOL. 7 ISSUE 4 4 The March meeting continued with critiques and fellowship: All of our Emerging Artists displaying their wonderful art! Pam Young offered helpful critiques with the help of Connie Chandler. Members had a hard time choosing a winner, but an easy time with the St. Patrick Day Treats!

CPPG COLORED PENCIL POINTS VOL. 7 ISSUE 4 5 Think Small for the May Judged Show Only Miniatures Will Be Allowed Here is some helpful information for the next Judged Show at Lake Miona Recreation Center. There are a few things that will be a little different. This show will be an all-miniatures show. Please see the guidelines for miniatures on our website. The date of the show and reception is May 20. The drop-off day is on May 19 from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. A big change will be the pick-up date for picking up your paintings from the January show. All paintings will need to be picked up on April 25 which is the Lake Miona Recreation Center workshop date. This is necessary to allow the Hanging Committee to have enough time to re-configure the hanging apparatus. Registration forms are due to Jackie Ullrich or Ellen Miller by May 15. Please remember our new rules of anonymity. 1. Please fill out your display card as usual, but also write the name of the painting on the back of the card. The cards will be attached to the frame and not on the glass. 2. For the Miniature Show, we are asking that the artist NOT sign the painting at this time. The size of the paintings are so small that even the tape method that was used in the last show will be too distracting! 3. All the forms are available on the website, including the Judged Show rules and miniature painting guidelines. We are all excited about our first ever miniature show, and it should be a great success! Ellen Miller and Jackie Ullrich, Judged Show Chairs Belk s Coupons are Now for Sale! We will are currently selling $5 coupons for the Saturday, May 5, Belk Charity Sale at both the April meeting and at the CPPG workshops. Each coupon sold will be a $5 donation to the CPPG Art Award fund. In addition, when you purchase an item with the coupon on May 5, $5 will be deducted from the purchase price. If you are unable to shop May 5, you can go into the store the week prior to the sale and reserve your item for later pickup. This coupon can be used on many items that are not normally discounted, including cosmetics and rarely discounted brands. In order to make this fundraiser a success we are hoping that each member buy at least one coupon. If you are unable to attend the sale, please think of this as a donation to the CPPG art award fund.

CPPG COLORED PENCIL POINTS VOL. 7 ISSUE 4 6 Product Review: Pencil Carousel by Jan Jones I spend far too much time looking for the right pencil when I m working so I am always open to a better way of keeping my pencils organized. My talented and clever friend and co-teacher, Sue Franz, has used a pencil turntable that she invented for many years. She has lots of wooden tubes purchased from a flea market vendor. She has arranged them on a turntable, and they hold her entire set of Prismacolor pencils. In addition, she even invented a carrying case that is made out of a cardboard hat box to which she added a strap for carrying. Our illustrious CPPG President, Renee Conboy, recently got a great bargain on a small swivel desktop organizer that will hold a limited number of pencils and will be easier for her to cart to workshops. I decided it was time for me to explore a new method of organizing my pencils (perhaps the umpteenth time since I began using colored pencils!). Because I tend to select most of my pencils prior to starting a new painting, I wanted one that was small but would hold my current project pencils and travel well. I turned to my favorite website, Amazon, to explore possibilities. Within a short time, I found just what I was hoping for: a 6-inch diameter, 7-cup rotating wooden pencil holder desk organizer colored pencil storage, that I renamed my pencil carousel. It s very well-constructed, rotates easily, and has a pleasant smell of wood. The maker claims that it holds up to 100 pencils, but I m not sure it does, because some pencils are larger around than others and take up more room. They do sell a larger size carousel which would probably hold an entire set of Prismacolor, but was too big for my purpose. I really like using Prismacolors, but I also use Caran d Ache Luminance and Derwent Procolour pencils. I found that all three brands work fine in my carousel, but Luminance and Procolour are easier to locate because the color is painted on the end of the pencils. I prefer putting point down so that I won t get stabbed by a sharp point. I think all short pencils, whether point down or point up, need a pencil extender or the entire pencil disappears from view within the cup. If I run out of my favorite wooden extenders, then I use a large diameter straw cut to the appropriate length. The carousel is making it easier for me to select colors, and I am using more colors because they re all easy to locate. For a carrying case, I remembered hearing about a ditty bag from a proud old tin can sailor. Amazon came through for me again, and sometime soon I will receive a quilted ditty bag in the mail that I am hoping will be just the right size to keep the pencils in the cups when I carry them to workshops. If you don t know what a ditty bag is, just ask a sailor. Product Info: Craft Innovation 7-cup rotating pencil holder, $29 plus shipping on Amazon.

CPPG COLORED PENCIL POINTS VOL. 7 ISSUE 4 7 Colored Pencil Painters Guild Artistic Advancement Certificate Reasons for Awarding the Artistic Advancement Certificate: To encourage our members to expand their horizons by entering their artwork in our Lake Miona Judged Shows, following participation in an Emerging Artists Exhibit (EAE). To increase participation in our judged shows which, in turn, helps to increase CPPG membership by educating the public about colored pencil painting. To give the artists an opportunity to have their paintings critiqued by a judge. To allow the artists an opportunity to compare their paintings against those of their peers and encourage goal setting. Rules 1. Only CPPG members in good standing are eligible to be considered for this award. 2. Eligibility is limited to members who, after participating in an EAE, enter a painting in a Lake Miona Judged Show 3. Entry in the Lake Miona Judged Show must be their first ever Judged Show. 4. Judged Show Rules must be followed in order to gain acceptance in the Lake Miona Judged Show. If you have any questions, please contact: Renee Conboy renee3088@embarqmail.com (352) Program Updates April 11 Meeting - Round Table Critiques Bring your work-in-progress or finished pieces to the April meeting for our Round Table Critiques. We will have member artists/instructors ready to offer suggestions for improving your work. As we ve done in the past, you will have the opportunity to receive feedback from two different critiquers. May 9 Meeting Barbara Perron on CPPG participation in Camp Villages Program Barbara will demonstrate how to paint a peach using three pencils. The room will be set up so that members can follow along with her. She ll discuss pencil strokes, blending to create colors, shading, and how to make the peach look three dimensional. Here is a short list of supplies we will ask you to bring that day. 1) Sharpened Prismacolor pencils in crimson red, ultramarine blue, lemon yellow. 2) Pencil with an eraser. 3) Working surface. CPPG will provide the template and paper. In addition, the guild will have some supplies available for those that have not yet purchased pencils or a work surface.

Thanks, Sunshine If you know of a member who is ill, recovering from surgery, or has had a death in the family, please let me know. I ll send that member an appropriate card on behalf of our Guild. Eleanor Kinney Sunshine Chairperson (352) Spring Jubilee is a Success Story The 2018 Spring Jubilee was a booming success! Feedback from attendees was consistently positive, which tells me that all your efforts were appreciated! Our hosts, the staff of Colony Recreation Center, did a great job setting up the facility for us. The ability to have the entire Study/Tea Room for demonstrations was critical, as class attendance clearly exceeded the space we had last year. The presenters were marvelous as always. The artists displays were beautiful; the talent and creativity brought great reviews from attendees. Need I mention Toodles, our welcoming clown, who drew attention to our special raffle baskets.

CPPG COLORED PENCIL POINTS VOL. 7 ISSUE 4 9 I could go on and on about all the parts and pieces that made up the Jubilee: the music, the raffles, the many donations. But I want to say that none of this happens without a lot of hard work by our volunteers. Over 60 of our members volunteered to help out this year. That s onethird of our total membership! To me, this willingness to step forward shows the level of commitment our members have to the Guild. Great job by all! Amy Ottilige We will have pictures of the Spring Jubilee on the website very soon, and look for more in the May issue of Pencil Points.
