1 "Australia's LEGENDAIRY Capital 2015" HELP SAVE OUR POOL A plea from the children and parents of Stanhope Most of you by now would be aware of the Shire of Campaspe s intentions to decommission our pool here in Stanhope. The Council is seeking community feedback from the following 3 options as outlined in an Aquatic Services Review discussion paper (April 2016), brought to council on Tuesday 19 th April In basic terms; Option A ALL facilities would be retained in their current formats and locations and capital funds would be allocated towards ensuring that all facilities are compliant with relevant legislation and guidelines. May, 2016 Option B Capital works allocated to remodel and upgrade facilities at Kyabram, Rochester, Rushworth and Echuca and decommission existing facilities at Lockington, Colbinabbin, Tongala and Stanhope and replace them with interactive water play. Option C Capital works allocated to remodel and upgrade facilities at Kyabram, Rochester and Rushworth and construct interactive water play facilities at each location. Closure and decommission of existing facilities at Stanhope. Obviously Option A is the only option we will consider if we want to keep our pool as is. Although it would be more beneficial for the Stanhope community if the pool was handed back to the community members to run and maintain. Currently a small team of local concerned parents and members of the community are working together to develop a business plan and forward a submission to the council by Friday, 24 th June As a small Legendairy community we ask that we all pull together and show our support to SAVE OUR POOL. Currently there are petitions being placed in local businesses where you can show your support by signing them in protest to the Shire closing our pool. These will be gathered and included within our submission to the Shire. If the council approves our submission and the pool is handed back to the community we will be able to make better use of our facility, starting with better opening and closing hours to suit the needs of the community. We will also need to seek financial support through grants, support from local business and the community, donations, signage/sponsorship and fundraising. We are seeking as much help from the community as we can get and any thoughts you may have can be discussed with the leader of the group, Jason Keegan at Keegan s Nurseries or on mobile We need to fight for our pool for the sake of our kids and the future of our small town. Please think of your own children, your grandchildren, your neighbours children, your friends children. We need a safe place for our children and everyone in the community to swim and enjoy during the hot summer days/evenings. What s the old saying. You don t know what you have got until it s GONE. TURATON COMING TO STANHOPE The Turaton Music Company, together with the Oxalis Wind Quintet will be performing at the Stanhope Community Hall on Sunday 15th May at 2.00pm. The Turaton Music Company Choir is very well known and extremely popular throughout the Goulburn Valley. They have performed at Stanhope on a number of occasions and their concerts have always been well attended. However, this year s concert promises to be even better, as the choir will be joined by the Oxalis Wind Quintet This quintet of very professional musicians consists of an Oboe, a Clarinet, a Flute, a French Horn and a Bassoon. They will be playing some well known classical pieces with the quintets own twist to them, which will make for easy listening, they also invite interaction from the audience. They will also accompany the Turaton Choir with some of their songs. The Stanhope performance will be the popular Cabaret Style as it has been previously with tables for up to six people. The audience is invited to bring along nibblies and drinks. Tea and coffee will be provided. The concert, in aid of the Stanhope Emergency Fund, commences at 2.00 pm and tickets at $20.00 each are available from the Stanhope Business Centre from am to 3.00 pm weekdays, or on the afternoon, at the door.

Locals will notice a change in the activity taking place, as works move from decommissioning the dam to excavating footings and pouring foundations. Fonterra Update Early phases of the construction village Last month it was reported that when peak construction is reached there may be up to 150 contractors using the construction village and working on the site. Fonterra anticipates this could occur as early as September 2016 and will liaise with the community before then to ensure the town can be prepared. Fonterra is keen to reinstate cheese manufacturing and employment in this part of the factory as soon as possible. In order to make the best use of time and weather conditions there may also be periods where some contractors will work on site seven days a week. STANHOPE PRIMARY SCHOOL REUNION - OCTOBER 14,15 & Now that the time is creeping closer to the big 100 years celebration weekend, we need to get our thinking caps on and try and remember who lived next door or down the end of the street. What about the kids who weren t TOWNIES who lived on the dairy farm down Blamey Road or way out the end of Hill Road. I m sure most of us can come up with a few names no-one else has. Who was that teacher you didn t like much or the one whose favourite was little Johnny even if he was the cheekiest in the class. Who was the rabbit who tried to set alight the portable and who was that girl who almost got stuck in the drain pipe and nearly missed the bus home? Those long lost rellies who haven t been back for ages. Call them, have a chat, jog their minds about old school days. What a great weekend for the family to get together. So anyone you manage to contact please ask them to or phone and leave their contact details. michelle.ponton@bigpond.com or Phone Vicki Schade on: Due to Increasing Demand J s Cafe of Stanhope Takeaway Food only will be available Thursdays and Fridays 5.00 pm until 8.00 pm. 3 STANHOPE WELCOMES NEWCOMERS TO THE DISTRICT STANHOPE CONCERT RAISES MORE THAN $4, The newcomers lined up waiting to be introduced by Glenda Cowie Des Crichton from the Stanhope Men s Shed presents cheques to Adam Holm and Neil McConnell McEwen Place in the heart of Stanhope was the scene on Sunday 17th April for a free sausage sizzle to welcome newcomers to the Stanhope district. A good number of newcomers were in attendance, but were outnumbered by locals, who welcomed them to Stanhope by inviting them to become involved in this close knit community by joining some of the many organisations available in the town. Glenda Cowie, president of the Stanhope & District Development Committee, sponsors of the day, introduced the newcomers to those in attendance, who then gave a brief talk about their reasons for coming to Stanhope and a summary of their previous locations. Glenda then introduced representatives of various organisations, which included those from CERT, the Bowls Club, the RSL, Catholic Ladies, Lions Club, Men s Shed, Hall Committee, Stanhope Development Committee, Bendigo Bank and Community Health. At the conclusion of the day the newcomers were presented with information kits giving details of various businesses and organisations in Stanhope. On Thursday night 14th April, some 190 people from across the Goulburn Valley jammed into the Stanhope Community Hall to enjoy a concert billed as the Concert of the Year and to help raise money in support of two very worthy local families. A concert arranged by well known local artist Reg Poole, in association with the Stanhope & District Men s Shed, raised in excess of $4, to be shared by the McConnell family who lost everything in a house fire recently and the family of Leukaemia Patient, Imojen Giffening. The concert compered by One FMs Diane Hunter, featured some of Northern Victoria s top artists including Reg Poole, Callum Gleeson, Steve & Hilary, Bevan and Lynette, Bec Hance & Pete Wilson along with the soloist from Four lions, Rob Falconer, Marie O Brien, Ray Martin and the Men s Shed Band, who all donated their time free of charge to make this such an enjoyable and successful event. Ray Martin kindly donated a guitar for Auction. Funds raised from the Auction were donated to the Giffening family. The organisers wish to thank all those who assisted in making the night such a success, including the ladies of the McEwen CWA and the many others who brought along a plate of goodies to assist them provide a typical Stanhope supper. 4 STANHOPE TAKES UP THE CHALLENGE TO TACKLE ICE IN OUR COMMUNITY The ICE Community Awareness action forum for Stanhope aims to strengthen community action and address the increasing community concern of ICE. The forum has been made possible by a grant from the Shire of Campaspe which led to the forming of the Stanhope ICE Working Party. A community action group made up of concerned community members who saw the need for an event which would educate, inform and raise awareness of ICE in the local community. Guest speakers at the forum will include representatives from Teen Challenge including Intake Co-Coordinator Murray Sibbison and the Victorian Police. The forum will be held on Tuesday June 7 th at 7pm at the Stanhope Football/ Netball Clubrooms. For further information phone Stanhope Health on a message can be left and all calls returned. ANZAC SERVICE AT STANHOPE ART SPACE & TOILET BLOCK PROJECT On Wednesday 13 th April, the first sod was turned on the railway land on Birdwood Avenue to start the beginning of the New Art Space and Toilet Block. After 11 years of negotiations with Vic Track and the Shire of Campaspe, the dream of a new Block of Toilets is actually coming to fruition. Bourke Builders (Simon Bourke a previous local), who has been awarded the contract, commenced work recently and with all going to plan the project should be completed by the end of June. The Toilet block will comprise 2 unisex, disability compliant toilets, with baby change tables included. There will be a storage room behind the toilets with a very attractively designed Lockable Art Space to display local Arts & Crafts or Local Museum Pieces, which may be made available for display. The Bills Horse Trough currently located on Brudenell Street will be incorporated into the design just outside the Toilets and will be made into a working Water Fountain with a dog drinking trough. The committee is looking for a suitable name for the project, so if you have any ideas or any questions in relation to the project, please ring Lyn Emmett on Photos: Cr Adrian Weston and Lyn Emmett turn the first sod to mark the commencement of the project Members of the committee, Lyn Emmett, Jean Anderson, Neville Cowie and Sue Sheers with Cr Adrian Weston. The Anzac commemorative service at Stanhope went extremely well. There was an excellent attendance, who paid their respects by remembering those who served in the Armed services during the wars. Once again the Catafalque party from the Puckapunyal School of Armour were the highlight and very well received by those in attendance. They added a lot of dignity to the service. A great afternoon tea was served by the ladies following the service in the community hall which had been decorated with lovely flowers. The RSL would like to thank all those who attended and helped keep the Anzac Spirit alive here in Stanhope. Harrison James Emmett Marcus and Kerrie Emmett welcome into their lives Harrison James Emmett Born Tuesday 26th April weighing 3.47 kgs. 5 IMOJEN S RIDE Holly and her horse Shelley Holly Sharples from Stanhope has just completed a 200km ride around the Goulburn Valley raising funds for her friend Imogen Giffening who has been a patient in the Royal Children s Hospital since late last year. Holly and her horse Shelley began their ride on Easter Monday and completed it a week later in Stanhope. Accompanying her on the walk were her mother Belinda, brother Liam and friend Cassie. Others joined the walk in different spots and kept their spirits up. A large sum of money was raised for Imogen and the Leukaemia Foundation which is still being tallied. A marvellous effort from 13 year old Holly. Holly, Belinda Liam and Cassie with Shelley eating in the background THANK YOU The family of Shirley Spiby would like to thank the community of Stanhope for the phone calls, cards and thoughts on the passing of their mum. GOOD FRIDAY APPEAL The Stanhope Fire Brigade with the assistance of local families conducted their annual Door Knock appeal on Good Friday. The total amount raised for the Royal Children's Hospital with donations, raffle and the door knock was $2, Winners of the Raffle were: 1st Prize Bev Gemmill, 2nd Prize Jinaya Nurse and 3rd Prize Ben Snelling. Thanks to all who assisted. Have you had a look at the walls of the Business Centre lately? Well, you ll notice there are things that look like very big cracks in parts of the wall. STEVEN S ANTICS I m in real serious trouble. Sure, they were tiny hair cracks, so I thought I would make them bigger by tearing out all the mortar between the bricks so people could see them. Trouble is, now I have started, I can t stop. It s like being on some sort of drug, the more I do the more I want to do, I just can t stop. However, now my mate who is always taking my photo, caught me red handed and took my photo tearing the mortar out. He was not impressed and started throwing lumps of mortar at me until I was forced to fly off. Lately, almost every day he catches me doing it and keeps throwing all sorts of things at me til I fly off, but I can t stop, I m hooked on mortar. I know if I don t stop, something very serious is going to happen to me, cos it s going to cost the people who look after the business centre a lot of money to fix the damage I have done. Has the drought broken?? An excellent rain of more than 20 mls on Friday 29th brought the total rainfall up to 28 mls for the month of April in Stanhope. Could this be the end of a very dry spell?. Stanhope s average rainfall in April is 33 mls. The lowest being in 1945 when no rain fell in Stanhope, while the highest was in 1974 when Stanhope received 141 mls during April. DEATH OF MRS CLARA BOERKAMP Mrs Clara Boerkamp passed away recently at the age of 96. Mrs Boerkamp will be remembered by many Stanhope residents for operating the original Stanhope Bakery on the site which is now Js of Stanhope Cafe. Clara and her family came to Stanhope more than fifty years ago and together with her late husband Bill, operated the bakery for many years. Following the death of Bill, the bakery was operated by her son Harry. Clara was responsible for building the block of three shops and residence at the rear, before leasing it and semi retiring. The three shops operated as the Bakery, a TAB and a Hairdresser for many years. During her years in Stanhope she lived in Ryrie Street. 6 Former Stanhope Coach Wins Elite Award Netball Victoria U/17 Coach Adam Sloan was awarded his Elite Coaching Accreditation during the National Championships earlier in the month. It was a reward for many years of hard work for Sloan, who has spent the last 15 years involved coaching netball at different levels. A former member of the men s Victorian team, Sloan was elated to earn the second highest level of coaching accreditation in Australia. I am elated to receive my Elite Coaching Accreditation, Sloan said. It has been a while in the making and something that I have been working towards for some time. His role as Head Coach was his first and he was proud of the team s performance in Perth. It was my first opportunity as a Head Coach and I loved every minute of it, getting the opportunity to take 12 athletes away and help them build and develop their skills was very rewarding, Sloan said. It was a fantastic opportunity for both myself and the athletes, I wanted to create a strong sense of belonging and they did themselves and the state proud. Sloan is currently in his second year as Head Coach of South Barwon, who he took to the Grand Final in Although his team lost the match in the final with 25 seconds to go, many of the squad has gone on to represent the state. In addition to his roles with the Victorian 17/U and South Barwon teams, Sloan has also been involved as a Pathway Coach regionally for Goulburn and as an assistant in various state programs. His passion for being involved in elite sport stems from his upbringing. Sloan spent his childhood in the small country town of Stanhope in regional Victoria where sport was a regular family outing. Having achieved his Elite Coaching Accreditation, Sloan hopes to share his knowledge and experience with younger coaches, while continually looking to build his coaching repertoire. Sloan plans to stay in Victoria for the coming years and hopes to one day have an opportunity to Coach at ANZ Championship level. There are a few people ahead of me now but I would love to get into High Performance coaching in the near future. Sustainable Farm Families Program for Stanhope Local farming men and women are being provided a unique opportunity to participate in the award winning Sustainable Farm Families (SFF) program, which focuses on the health, wellbeing and safety of farmers and their families. The SFF program was developed specifically for farm men and women by farm men and women and involves interactive workshops that address their specific health, wellbeing and safety. More than 2,400 farmers have participated in the program across Australia and praised the program. The Stanhope workshop will be held on Tuesday 21st June & Wednesday 22nd June, This program is one in a series of programs being rolled out across Victoria. Legendairy Group Committee member Kerrie Gray, said while local farmers work tirelessly to take care of their stock and produce, it is important that they take time to assess their health and wellbeing. Farmers have higher rates of preventable health issues such as high blood pressure than the general population however small changes to lifestyle can make a large impact on improving health and wellbeing. SFF workshops cover a range of health topics including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, stress, farm safety, men s and women s health, depression, respiratory illness on farm, anxiety, nutrition and exercise and all focussed on farming communities. The free program is an initiative of National Centre for Farmer Health delivered in partnership with the Legendairy Committee and GV Health Waranga. Interested farmers are urged to register their interest with any of the contacts below before May 15th, For more information contact; Kerrie Gray Ph Andrew Hipwell Ph Glenda Cowie Ph Jacqui Wallace (GV Health) Ph or visit -programs.
