Stanhope, in the Murray Dairy region of Victoria, home to just 490 people, is the first to hold the coveted title, which has been awarded as part of Dairy Australia s inaugural search for the nation s most vibrant and resilient dairying community. Dairy Australia s Managing Director, Ian Halliday, said that since the search began in April, he has been extremely impressed by the large number of stories of the tireless contribution dairy farmers make to improve the social fabric of their regional towns. It s wonderful to be able to shine a light on Australia s dairy farmers and these LEGENDAIRY communities who are proud, innovative and inspiring. Stanhope is a close-knit community that has faced its share of challenges, but it has also thrived by pulling together through the good and tough times, he said. Originally founded as a soldier settlement after the First World War, dairy quickly became an important industry and remains so today. The Stanhope community agrees that without dairy, which is a way of life for so many residents, the town would be a very different place. From sporting teams and social groups, to schools and emergency services, the LEGENDAIRY people of Stanhope, with Andrew Hipwell and Kerrie Gray leading the way, are not afraid of hard work, many of them volunteering their time to make the town what it is today. As the LEGENDAIRY Capital of the Murray Dairy region, Stanhope received a $2500 community grant to enhance a playground at the Stanhope Recreation Reserve. That project, identified and supported by the many groups and local residents in the town, will now receive a further $7500. A community event will be held in Stanhope on Thursday November 12th to celebrate the news and the people behind the nomination. To see and hear from the proud and passionate people of Stanhope, watch their video: Stanhope/video. The seven remaining regional finalists that also received a $2500 grant to invest in a community project are: Meeniyan (Gippsland) Peterborough (Western Victoria) Comboyne (New South Wales) Monto (Subtropical) Port Elliot (South Australia) Smithton (Tasmania) Northcliffe (Western Australia) The bi-annual search for Australia s LEGENDAIRY Capital will begin again in 2017 and once again, Dairy Australia will be encouraging towns across all dairy regions to nominate. STANHOPE ART SPACE & AMENITIES BLOCK UPDATE Neville & Lyn met with several Shire representatives including the Project Manager, Gary Biddle where they went over the Project Management Plan and viewed the Proposed Detail Design and Construction drawings. The Project Plan has been submitted to the next stage for official costing and tender process. If all goes to plan the amenities block should be completed by the end of June 2016.

2 Funding for football and netball clubs now available Football and netball clubs in the Euroa electorate can now apply for funding through the 2016 Country Football Netball grants program. Member for Euroa and Deputy Leader of The Nationals, Steph Ryan said funding was available to upgrade grounds and facilities and all country football netball clubs could apply. This funding is designed for regional clubs who may be struggling with out-dated, over-used or weather-damaged facilities. Grants of up to $100,000 are available for projects that improve facilities, including change room upgrades, court upgrades, installation of improved ground surfaces, and installation of sports lighting. Eligible clubs can apply for funding through their local councils by completing an expression of interest form and I encourage all clubs in need of works to consider making an application. Ms Ryan said country football netball clubs were often the lifeblood of rural communities and having up to date facilities was important. Sporting clubs foster friendships and connections within communities and give young players the opportunity to develop their skills in a supported environment. It is so important that our sporting clubs are provided with the facilities they need to run effectively and continue the great work they do in our communities. For more information or to apply online, visit: Or contact: Steph Ryan or Craig plays his 200 th Game for Stanhope Football Club Craig Emmett played his 200 th senior game on September 12 th against Avenel in the 1 st Semi- Final at Nagambie. Craig has played all his football at Stanhope commencing in the Under 12 s, Under 14 s, Thirds and Reserves and becomes the youngest ever in the club to reach this milestone and become a Life Member. The only season he has ever missed was in 2007 when he was overseas. He began his senior footy in 2004 and has kicked 203 goals in his career. Stanhope seniors played off in the Grand final on Saturday 26 th September against Merrigum while the Reserves met Lancaster, but unfortunately both teams were beaten on the day. Stanhope under 17 netball girls were also beaten in the Grand final so it was not a great day for Stanhope, but they have had a very successful season this year. LEGENDAIRY farmer takes local kids footy program to the next level This VFL Final is going to be special in many ways for a group of 7/8 year olds who will be hitting the turf today. Dairy farmer Andrew Hipwell from Stanhope, Victoria is the local Auskick coordinator and says today s event is important not only for the participating children and their families, but for the whole of Stanhope, a 490 strong community located in the Murray Dairy region of northern Victoria. The kids are really looking forward to the final and are all going to be decked out in their Stanhope gear, he says. Ten kids from the Stanhope Auskick program will be practising their skills with their families cheering them on. I ve been training them for a couple of years and one of the boys is moving to Ballarat soon, his dad is a policeman and has got a job there so this is a good send off for him, Andrew says. The Stanhope community has been looking for opportunities for the kids and today s event, which is supported by Dairy Australia s LEGENDAIRY Capital program, is a perfect fit. Stanhope Primary School is small with only 36 pupils and small schools miss out on a lot of things, Andrew says. They don t get to experience the things bigger schools do, and we want to instil what was instilled in us by our elders; a bit of town pride and make them feel part of the community. Auskick not only teaches kids the skills needed for the game, it also teaches kids about camaraderie. It brings the community together and makes players families better friends, he says. Stanhope was recently awarded the inaugural title of Australia s LEGENDAIRY Capital, recognising the importance of the dairy industry, and the community cohesiveness and resilience in regional communities. Andrew was one of the community members behind Stanhope s standout application for the title. It was just amazing to think a little town like us could win. We gave it our best shot and we hoped for the best, it was just fantastic to hear we were successful, he says. As a town we are a close-knit community. If something needs to be done, people just jump on board and do it, and probably like a lot of small country towns, your organisations and your sporting clubs are the glue that holds the town together when times are tough: we had the longest drought on record a while back, Andrew says. Dairy provides an income to the small businesses in town, which support our sporting clubs and they keep the town going and also create opportunities for our kids. 3 Stanhope pet food business wants kangaroo carcasses Countrywide Petfoods Pty Ltd in Stanhope wants the state government s trial allowing kangaroo carcasses to be used for pet food to be made permanent. Business owner Michael Scales said this would allow him to fully employ an extra four people and would go a long way towards addressing the issue of sustainable management of Kangaroos in Victoria. Leader of The Nationals Peter Walsh and Deputy Leader of The Nationals and Member for Euroa Steph Ryan were in Stanhope recently to meet with Mr Scales and call on Labor to do something about kangaroo numbers. We are calling on Labor to increase the number of permits issued for kangaroos and to extend the previous Coalition Government s kangaroo processing trial, Ms Ryan said. I continue to be contacted by constituents concerned about the number of kangaroos on our roads, as well as on farmland. Making this trial permanent would benefit Victoria two fold by increasing employment opportunities, such as here in Stanhope, and by allowing for more control over the kangaroo population. Mr Scales said his business currently employed 40 full time equivalent staff and had been in operation close to 50 years, supplying meat for pets to Melbourne, Geelong, Sydney and Brisbane. The business has processed over 2000 kangaroos since the Coalition introduced the trial, but with the trial coming to an end the business was now left in limbo. The government needs to provide clarity on whether or not the trial will be continued or made permanent, Mr Scales said. We need to have that assurance so that we can make commitments to our investors and to our employees. We are keen to invest further in this part of the business and expand what we are doing, but there is no point investing money unless we are going to see a return in the long run. Mr Scales said he would also like to see the trial extended to include all local government areas across regional Victoria. This would allow for a continuous, ongoing and sustainable management process across all of Victoria. Ms Ryan said the trial had also been the first real approach to understanding the Victorian kangaroo population and the number of kangaroos being controlled within the state. It is time the government took the issue seriously and did something about the problem, Ms Ryan said. This is not about declaring open season on kangaroos. It s about taking sensible measures to manage the population. The government has an opportunity to create local employment while also ensuring that kangaroo numbers are sustainably managed. she said. In particular 2002 and 2006 were by far the driest years during the drought. The average rainfall for September is 40.2 mls. The highest rainfall for September was 121 mls in 1960 and the lowest was 4.2 mls in Paper & Printing kindly donated by FONTERRA Page: 4

5 Stanhope s Top Ten Footballers (part four) 1 Aub Downing Yabby s best ever player at Stanhope. Played majority of his footy at full back and had very few goals kicked against him. His drop kicks from the backline often reached the centre of the ground and he was also a very strong and reliable overhead mark. He was very fast for his size and when he was not in a position to mark the ball he would punch the ball away from the forwards. He always played very close to his opponent and generally limited their scoring ability, even though he was often playing against some of the best full forwards in country Victoria. Aub was a very confident player who backed his judgement and his attack on the ball was quite ferocious, and he was a very team orientated player. He played all his footy at Stanhope in the GVFL in the 1940 s and 1950 s and in 1946 he won the Morrison Medal as the best and fairest player in the GVFL, polling votes in 13 of the 15 games he played, (8 best on ground, 2 second votes and 3 single votes) as well as missing the last 3 games due to injury. He also won club best and fairest awards in 1946 and He signed up to play footy with Footscray in the VFL but decided to stay at Stanhope, and was quoted by a Melbourne umpire as being the best full back outside of the VFL. Aub played during the 2 nd world war and missed quite a few games of footy while overseas. After retiring from playing footy Aub continued his involvement with the club as a committee member, club selector, goal umpire and along with his wife Cynthia and family they were all great supporters of the club in all aspects. Aub was also renowned as one of the top lawn bowlers in the district and was also a very capable cricketer mainly as a fast bowler with Stanhope. A real champion bloke who will be remembered as one of the all time greats in Stanhope s sporting history. Pictured are two of Aub s greatest fans, and two of Stanhope s greatest legends, wife Cynthia and Yabby Nelson proudly holding Aub s 1946 Morrison Medal. A big thanks to Yabby Nelson for giving all local footy followers an insight into some of the greats of the game, and due to the huge amount of generous and positive feedback received by Yabby, we have decided to give anyone that is brave enough the opportunity to put together their top ten Stanhope footballers, which we will publish next month. Please your list of 10 players to Mick West westmjl@bigpond.com by 25/10/15 and include what era your list relates to eg to To start proceedings here is my top 10 from 1973 to Robert Harrison 9 - Barry Nexhip 8 - Ken Chapman 7 - Mark McQueen 6 - Robert Newton 5 - Colin Robinson 4 - Mark Patten 3 - Gavin Exell 2- Brenton Gray 1 - Mick Auld. 6 Stanhope Lions Steven s Antics Steven the Wrecker Yep that s me, Steven the wrecker. If you don t believe me just ask a few people. The mighty Stanhope Lions ended the season on a disappointing note after having 3 sides play off in the Grand Final and all being defeated at Mooroopna last Saturday. The under 17 netball girls came up against hot favourites Nagambie and they put in a gallant effort but the more experienced Nagambie side were able to gradually build an 8 goal lead by half time, and eventually ran out winners 43 to 28. It was a very proud but disappointed coach, Kerrie Gray, who heaped praise on her girls after the game for giving all they could and to take away the experience and look towards the future with great confidence. The reserves coached by Bill Campbell faced off against the unbeaten Lancaster side and entered the game without hard running Tim Britton who was a late withdrawal from the side due to an ankle injury sustained the day before. The Lions went goal for goal with Lancaster until three quarter time with only 3 points separating both sides, but it was Lancaster who kicked 4 last quarter goals while restricting Stanhope to only 5 behinds to run out winners to Stanhope Brayden Keck and Ryan Cooper worked tirelessly all game and were well supported by Jack Cockcroft, Jason Leocata and Nick Chambers. The seniors went into the game against favourites Merrigum without inspirational coach and on field leader Brenton Hoota Gray who suffered a serious leg injury the week before, and found themselves under fierce pressure from the opening bounce. Merrigum were able to take control of the game early and by quarter time had scored while keeping the Lions scoreless. The second quarter saw Merrigum kick further ahead and by half time had a handy lead to Stanhope 1.2.8, Adding to Stanhope s problems was a serious jaw injury to big ruckman Klint Wagstaff who bravely battled out the game before heading straight to hospital for treatment. The third quarter saw Stanhope fight their way back into the game with the entire backline working overtime and continually pushing the ball forward and Stanhope had a glimmer of hope at the last change but were still 29 points down. Stanhope played their best quarter of footy during the last quarter but the margin was just too great and they eventually lost the game to Stanhope was best served by Mick Coad, Jayden Exell, Nathan Gemmill and Craig Emmett. Just ask the people who own the cars that I have torn the rubber off from around the windscreens, or wrecked the wiper blades. Or ask those whose tobacco I ve pinched and wrecked the packets and spread the baccy all over the place, cos smoking isn t good for you. But anyhow, I reckon I know a fair bit about wrecking cos I watched them wreck that big building in the town that had the big fire a while back and I watched them wreck the old police house. So now I reckon I m qualified to tell others how to wreck things, like just recently, when I saw this bloke wrecking a shed just out of town by pulling all the iron off the roof. So to give him a bit of advice, I landed right beside him and told him how to go about it. He was making a heck of a lot of noise with Iron crashing to the ground and him bashing with a hammer and some other tools, but it didn t worry me a bit. Anyhow, he got all the iron off after I gave him some real good advice, as you can see in the photo.
