1 "Australia's LEGENDAIRY Capital 2015" Stanhope s Andrew Hipwell, Citizen of the year FEBRUARY, 2016 Ann Bell Arts Person of the Year Photo courtesy of Blake Rosenberg Andrew Hipwell (R.) with Alex Gelsi who was awarded the Rushworth Young Citizen of the Year. Members of the Stanhope & District Development Committee (S&DDC) were delighted to learn their nomination, Andrew Hipwell, was declared Citizen of the Year in the Rushworth District and also citizen of the year across the Shire of Campaspe. The S&DDC considered Andrew to be a very worthy recipient of the awards, following his efforts of the past few years, in bringing a great deal of awareness of Stanhope across Victoria and Australia. His work with the young people of the Stanhope District, through his and their involvement and participation with Auskick, has been greatly appreciated by many parents. However, his involvement with all the Stanhope community in playing a major role, together with others, by successfully nominating Stanhope for recognition as The Legendairy Capital of Australia has been outstanding and strengthened the resolve of the S&DDC in nominating Andrew for the award. Secretary of the S&DDC, Bob Holschier, said members were absolutely delighted to see that Andrew has been fittingly recognised for his tremendous work during the past few years. Mr Holschier stated, we were very encouraged with putting forward Andrew s nomination, when we received so many supporting letters from the various organisations Andrew was involved with, that brought so much recognition Australia - wide to Stanhope. These supporting letters came from Dairy Australia, Fonterra, AFL, Murray Goulburn region, the Stanhope Primary School and parents of children involved with Auskick. Pictured are some of the arts group with Ann. Jenny, Margo, Ann, Judy and Johanna Stanhope s Ann Bell was awarded the Arts Person of the Year Award at the Australia Day Ceremony in Rushworth. Ann was speechless when her name was read out; she went to the ceremony to support another arts person. Ann is an artist of long standing and contributes greatly to the art show at the Easter Fair in Rushworth each year. She also works in the catering area at the art show and is highly deserving of this special award. Ann has been a tireless worker arranging the Rushworth Easter Heritage Art Show every year since she took over the management of it in The Art show under Ann s management has gone from strength to strength during those years, being recognised as a major showcase for artists, including juniors, across the Goulburn Valley. Profit from this art show is distributed to the Waranga Hostel, the Rushworth Hospital and the Rushworth SES. Blake Rosenberg Photographer / Photojournalist Freelance

3 Daniel and Bonnie Two family weddings for Simon and Cate Fraser Simon and Cate Fraser have enjoyed the weddings of their son Daniel and their daughter Madeleine over the past 10 weeks. On Saturday January 16th, Daniel, their eldest son married Bonnie Morison in a beautiful ceremony in the gardens of Bonshaw Stanhope. Following the ceremony the 160 guests were entertained with garden games before enjoying a magnificent reception and dancing in the teepee set up in the grounds of Bonshaw. Bonnie wore a beautiful custom made gown of lace and fine tulle. Bonnie was attended by her sister Alyssia, friends Alice and Abby and her new sister-in-law Madeleine Gilby. Daniel was supported by his cousin Nick Barnett, his brothers Simon and James Fraser and his mate Greg Marr who all wore the Fraser Lovat tartan bowtie. Daniel and Bonnie honeymooned in Bali before returning to their home and work in Geelong. Madeleine, their only daughter married Travis Gilby of Kotupna at St Mary s Church Echuca on November 7th Following the marriage a reception and dancing for 160 guests was held at Dungala Function Centre in Moama. Simon and Cate had married on the same date, November 7th in 1981 and Madeleine s grandparents Frank and Mary Dullard had married on November 8th Madeleine wore a beautiful Maggie Sottero gown of ivory lace with gold underlay and she was attended by two school friends, Gemma O Sullivan and Kate Crosier. Madeleine and Travis spent their honeymoon travelling along the east coast to Byron Bay in their new camper van, which Fraser Family Travis surprised Madeleine with on the day of their wedding. Madeleine and Travis returned to their home in Moama and work in Echuca and Bendigo. It was rather unique that both Madeleine and Daniel had their uncles marry them. Fr Gerald Dullard from South Yarra came out of retirement to marry Madeleine and Travis and Mr John Murphy of Berwick married Daniel and Bonnie. 4 Kylie Spencer Graduates Kylie Spencer recently graduated at Latrobe University Bundoora with a "Bachelor of Nursing". She is living in C a m b e r w e l l i n Melbourne and has gained a graduate position at the Epworth Private Hospital in Richmond, starting this July. We wish her all the very best in her new career. Alan Haase Friends will be sorry to hear that former Stanhope Hotel Motel publican, Alan Haase passed away recently in Queensland. He was aged 96, with his wife Kath predeceasing him about two years prior. The Haase s lived in Stanhope in the late 60 s - early 70 s. They were the second owners of the hotel and resided in Stanhope for around 18 years before moving to Healesville then Queensland. Peter and Wayne, their children, attended school here. Steven s Antics Ryan calls for feedback on cost of living pressures The Victorian Liberal National Coalition last week launched CostWatch, an initiative to hear directly from Victorians about the cost of living pressures they face. Deputy Leader of The Nationals and Member for Euroa Steph Ryan said the project aimed to uncover cost-of-living issues faced by Victorian families, get households and businesses talking, and most importantly use people power to reduce unnecessary costs. The Andrews Labor Government keeps promising to ease the cost of living pressures, but empty promises equal empty wallets, Ms Ryan said. There is no question that cost-of-living pressures are taking a toll on Stanhope households and families. Whether it is utility bills, transport, or health costs, the cost of living is rising sharply and it is time to take action, she said. The Liberal National Coalition wants to hear directly from Victorians and over the coming months they will take the CostWatch initiative around the state. For more information, and to tell us directly about cost of living pressures, visit CostWatch.com.au or c o n t a c t S t e p h R y a n v i a : steph.ryan@parliament.vic.gov.au or in writing to 2/55 Carrier Street, BENALLA VIC If you want to share your story, or have a chat, I would love to hear from you, Ms Ryan said. Media contact: Steph Ryan or Too Hot For Me Yep, I don t like this hot weather, so that s why you haven t seen me around much lately. I have a couple of nice cool spots in the town where I hang out on these hot days. You know it s not funny being a bird, cos we are all covered in feathers and when it s hot you just can t take them off, like people can. I see a lot of people around on hot days with not much on and that helps them stay cool, I can t do that, so I hope you feel sorry for me and all my mates. Talking about mates, there has been a lot of Corellas in town lately. Some people reckon they are mates of mine. Well, I m telling you they are no mates of mine. They are ugly compared to me, cos I m a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo and we are by far the most handsome, just take a look at the photo of me at the Australia Day show. And those Corellas, they make a real racket, always squawking. They sometimes hang out with Galahs and I m no Galah. Although it s been hot, I did find enough energy to show up at the Australia day show in McEwen Place. I couldn t really miss it could I? cos I am an Australian, through and through. 5 Dorothy Edna BURROWS 9/10/32 12/1/16 Dorothy Edna was born on 9 th October 1932 to Eliza and William Cassidy. She was the loved and adored sister of Bill, Harold, James, Lil, Ann, Ada, Alice, June and Elaine. She was the second youngest of the family. She had a happy childhood in Stanhope and attended primary school until grade 4, when the family moved to Melbourne for her father to take part in essential services for the war. Dot attended Hawkesbury school and left school at age 13. Dot met Jim when she was 14. Jim was employed at Wrights truck yard and Dot worked at Hepples Emporium. They became engaged at 17 and Dot was then working in Melbourne. She returned to Stanhope to marry at 19 years of age. They built a home in Stanhope and had five daughters, Vicki, Debbie, Wendy, Jenny and Sue. Those five girls have produced 13 grandchildren, who in turn have produced 26 great grandchildren. Dot and Jim moved to Waranga House in Rushworth in 2013 and Dot s final 6 months were spent in Sheridan Aged Care in Kyabram. They were together for 63 years, a remarkable achievement and there are many wonderful memories for the family to treasure. Farewell Dot. Shave for a Cure Local enthusiastic supporter Bev Rogerson is raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. Leukaemia is cancer of the blood and 34 Australians are diagnosed with this every day. The foundation raises funds to support people who have been diagnosed whilst they undergo treatment and to undertake research into finding a cure for this insidious disease which can occur at any age. Bev and her family first came into contact with leukaemia when her grandson Zach was first diagnosed at 22 months. He is 3 now and has been undergoing treatment constantly since then which will continue for another 2 years. Bev had a stall at the last Monster Garage Sale which was very well supported. There will be a raffle at the February garage sale and the main event is Bev having her head shaved at the March Monster Garage Sale. The raffle has some wonderful prizes and will be drawn on 13th March at the shave day. Bev is selling tickets around the district and donation tins will be in the shops raising awareness of the Leukaemia Foundation until then. Please donate to this worthy cause. For further information or to donate look up: Stanhope Swimming Pool It has been a great summer for the Stanhope pool. Lots of lovely hot weather to use this marvellous facility. Learn to swim classes were held earlier in the month and it was a bonus to have them at Stanhope and not have to travel. The children who attended enjoyed the classes with Lisa and learned lots. There are different inflatable s at the pool which are swapped between towns to ensure variety such as on Australia Day there were giant thongs with the Australian flag on them. Come along and enjoy the last of the hot weather at the Stanhope pool Paper & Printing kindly donated by FONTERRA Page: 5

6 Bowls Champions The Stanhope Bowls Club Championships were held on the 3rd January. I n t h e M e n s O p e n Championship a close battle was fought out between Scott Donaldson and Neville Cowie. After 18 ends there was only 1 shot separating them, but from then on Scott put his foot down and never allowed Neville back in the game running out eventual winner 26 to 16. Also on this event- filled day we had the Mens B Grade Championship between John Gibbs and Brad Robinson. John got out to a strong lead after 13 ends having a 6 shot lead but Brad got over his Jetlag f r o m h o l i d a y i n g i n Queensland and shifted up a gear to come from behind to take out the title 25 to 18. In the Women s Open Championship we saw mother v daughter with Jenny Crilly going up against Jamie Stokes. With Jenny going for her 10th Club Championship and Jamie her 1st this was always going to be an interesting battle. Jamie gave a brave performance but Jenny's experience shone through to take out her 10th title 26 to 17. Congratulations to all who played, games were all played in great spirit. Also thank you to those who helped mark the games. Kathleen Jean HARRIS 24/6/1921 7/1/2016 Jean was born in Wangaratta, daughter to Nanna Cavanagh and Joe Trimble, sister to Jack and Tess (deceased). She attended Primary and Catholic Secondary schools in Wangaratta. Jean worked at Wangaratta Woollen Mills, where she met Ken and they were married on 17/9/41. Jean loved to knit and crochet and had a paying job supplying baby shops in Wangaratta. In 1964 the family moved to Stanhope across the road from the butter factory where Ken was maintenance engineer. Jean had many friends in Stanhope and was down the street most days shopping, changing her library books and having a chat. After Ken died in 2006, Jean stayed in the family home until she could no longer cope alone and moved to Clunes to live with Jenny for the last three years where she was spoilt rotten by Jenny and Wendy. 94 years well lived. 7 Fonterra Factory Update Kevin Mason Memorial Garden Gordon Gray Gordon Gray was one of the first pioneers of the Quarter Horse Association in Victoria back in the seventies. Gordon was still riding cutting horses in his eighties, now he is reunited with his most favourite horse War Idol, son of War Creek. War Creek was one of the first American Quarter horses introduced into Australia in Happy trails Gordon, we will all miss you. Steve, Aileen and the Gray family. It was noted in the January About Town that Fonterra has dump trucks and excavators carrying out earth works at the site. These works have been to decommission the northern dam. This dam is surplus to the site s requirements but will also become the future location of the new cheese facility once Fonterra obtains Council and EPA approvals to build. As part of the decommissioning works, the Kevin Mason Memorial Rose Garden has also needed to be removed from the western embankment of the dam. Some of you may recall that Kevin was the grounds keeper at the factory back in Bonlac times and the rose garden, featuring 80 roses, was named in his memory after his passing. An excavator was used to individually remove each rose bush to maximise the amount of root mass extracted. They have been wrapped in hessian, placed on pallets for relocation to a secure location and fitted out with a drip irrigation system for the duration of their ~ month holiday. Fonterra intends to reinstate them once the cheese plant has been rebuilt and a suitable area identified. Of the 80 rose bushes removed in total, only five (5) proved a challenge where they had been planted too close to services or there was not enough root mass able to be extracted. Fonterra s green thumbs will keep an eye on them, watch-out for black spot and prune them again later in the year.
