8 WHAT IS HAIR? The main cnstituent f hair is the prtein keratin. Keratin is a structurally strng and remarkable prtein that is resistant t wear and tear. 3) The utermst layer is knwn as the cuticle. The cuticle is thin and clurless and serves as a prtectr f the crtex. It can be fund in feathers, claws, nails and mre imprtantly hair. Similar t ther prteins, keratin is cmprised f large mlecules, cnsisting f much smaller units called amin acids, which are held tgether in chains under strng chemical bnds. Hair cmprises f 10-13% f water, fats, the pigment melanin, vitamins and traces f zinc and ther metals, all f which are essential cmpnents. Each strand f hair cnsists f three vital layers. 1) An innermst layer r medulla which is nly present in large thick hairs. 2) The middle layer knwn as the crtex, which prvides strength, clur and the texture f hair. The hair fllicle The Hair fllicle is a tiny cup-shaped skin rgan deep in the fat f the scalp that prduces hair. Attached t the fllicle is a sebaceus gland, a tiny sebum-prducing gland fund everywhere except n the palms, lips and sles f the feet. The fllicle is supplied with vital nutrients frm the minute bld vessels. 2

9 The temperature arund the fllicle is regulated t nrmal bdy temperature and is nt affected by external changes. The hair fllicle can be divided int tw imprtant regins. a) The hair bulb The hair bulb lies inside the hair fllicle. It is a structure f actively grwing cells, which eventually prduce the lng fine cylinder f a hair. New cells are cntinuusly prduced in the lwer sectin f the bulb. As they grw and develp they steadily push the previusly frmed cells upwards. When the cells reach the upper part f the bulb they begin t arrange themselves int six cylindrical layers, ne inside the ther. The inner three layers f cells becme the actual hair. The uter three layers becme the lining f the hair fllicle. At the base f the hair fllicle is the dermal papilla which cntains receptrs fr male hrmnes and is feed by the nutrient rich bldstream t prduce new hair. It is the dermal papilla (DP) which directs and dictates the embrynic generatin f a hair fllicle and it als retains this instructive ability thrughut the life f the hair fllicle. The bigger the DP, the mre cells it has and the thicker the hair fibre becmes. 3

10 Terminal hairs n the head are lubricated by a natural il (sebum) prduced by the sebaceus glands f the fllicles. Hw much natural il yur glands prduce is mstly determined by yur genetic inheritance. In many teenagers, a massive surge in hrmne levels leads t raised grease prductin, thus prducing greasy hair. Special cells in the hair bulb prduce the pigment that clurs the hair. The pigment is called melanin, and these cells are knwn as melancytes. As the develping hair mves upwards in the fllicle the melanin is carried with it. b) The hair shaft This is the part f the hair that can be seen abve the scalp. It cnsists mainly f dead cells that have turned int keratins and binding material, tgether with small amunts f water. 4

11 THE PHASES OF THE HAIR GROWTH CYCLE Each hair fllicle underges a cycle f activity in three distinct phases. The hair grws t a maximum length, then ceases grwth and the hair is shed and replaced. At any particular time we nly have arund 85% f ur hair n ur head as the remainder is in the resting stages. These three key stages are:~ 1. Anagen: the perid f active grwth 2. Catagen: the perid f breakdwn and change 3. Telgen: the resting stage Pigment (melanin) is prduced in the hair bulb thrughut this phase f the hair cycle. Reduced pigment prductin ccurs in the hair f lder peple. This is why white hairs appear, even thugh the hair itself may still be grwing strngly. With age the hair cycle becmes shrter, the fllicles gradually give up prducing lng, strng hair, and the hairs becme thinner and shrter. The result may be a general thinning f the hair, r even a degree f baldness. Catagen Phase transitinal r intermediate phase Anagen Phase Grwth Phase The anagen phase f a new hair starts the mment it begins t grw in the active regin f the hair bulb. This usually lasts fr sme years, generally between three and seven, withut interruptin. Since human hairs grw apprximately 1 centimetre a mnth, hairs ptentially can extend t a length f a metre r s. This marks the end f the active grwth perid, as changes ccur in the fllicle. The hair stps grwing and becmes detached frm the base f the fllicle frming a club hair which begins t break dwn, resulting in the fllicle becming shrter. A small sectin f the uter rt sheath remains in cntact with the grup f cells that frmed the papilla. This perid f breakdwn r change lasts abut three weeks. As the inner rt sheath breaks dwn, the hair remains in the fllicle due t its shape. On average, 1% f fllicles are held in the catagen stage. 5

12 Telgen Phase resting r the shedding phase The resting phase fllws the catagen phase and nrmally lasts abut 5-6 weeks. During this time the hair des nt grw but stays attached t the fllicle while the dermal papilla stays in a resting phase belw. Apprximately percent f all hairs are in this phase at any ne time. ne in ten f the fllicles n an individual s head are in the shedding phase. What cntrls hair grwth? General health and nutritinal factrs are increasingly believed t be imprtant factrs fr healthy hair grwth. The upper part f the germ frms the new cells that lengthen the fllicle belw the club hair. Shedding is part f the nrmal prcess f the replacement f ld hair with new. At any ne time, arund 6

13 HAIR TYPES AND COLOUR The type f hair yu pssess is inherited frm yur parents, mre specifically the mixture f specific genes yu have inherited frm yur parents. Scientists have identified three basic types f hair in tday s human ppulatin, and have related them t three early races: Asian, Caucasian and African. Asian These are peple frm the Orient, fr example frm China and Japan. Their hair is very straight, and always black in clur. Caucasian Caucasian is extremely varied; they range frm the fairskinned peple f nrth-west Eurpe t the widely different peple f the Indian subcntinent. Their hair may be either wavy r straight with great variatins in width and usually frm black t a pale blnd in clur. African African peple riginated in Africa. Their hair is black and tightly curled. It tends t be wlly and dry, and is extremely easily damaged by heat r chemicals. Variatins in hair structure Factrs affecting variatins include: Arrangement f the large bundles f keratin within each hair shaft. Psitin f the hair bulb in the hair fllicle. Irregular grwth in the hair bulb. Twisting f the hair shaft. Shape f the hair fllicle. All hair underges twisting as it grws. The greater the number f twists in a given length f hair, the curlier the hair strand will becme. Sme African hair has up t 12 times mre twists per centimetre as than a Caucasian hair. Caucasian peple tend t have val shaped shafts and the differing keratin bundles prduce cmbinatins f straight and wavy hair. In Asian peple the keratin bundles in the hair are all straight and the hair shaft tends t be thick, and almst cmpletely rund. 7

14 WHAT IS MALE PATTERN BALDNESS? A prgressive, diffuse lss f scalp hair in men, dependant n the presence f the andrgenic hrmne teststerne, and is caused by a cmbinatin f genetic and hrmnal factrs. Als calledalpecia hereditaria, andrgenetic alpecia, male pattern alpecia, patterned alpecia. Male pattern baldness is the cmmn type r cause f hair lss that develps in mst men at sme stage in their lives. On average it usually takes years fr the entire cycle t prduce ttal baldness, hwever, sme unfrtunate men can be cmpletely and utterly bald in fewer than five years. The main types f balding based n this scale are anterir (frnt) and vertex (back). Typically, the hair begins t recede r regress at the frnt abve the temples, tgether with a nticeable thinning f the hair n tp f the head. A bald patch gradually develps in the middle f the scalp. The receding frnt areas, and the bald patch n the tp (the crwn) gradually enlarge and cnverge tgether. A rim f hair is ften left arund the back and sides f the scalp. The Hamiltn-Nrwd scale is a way f measuring male pattern baldness. It was intrduced by Dr. James Hamiltn in the 1950s and later revised and updated by Dr. O Tar Nrwd in the 1970s. It is imprtant t nte that nt all cases are identical s an accurate system f measuring baldness is a difficult task.
