14 Intrductin It all started with bad skin and a tn f skincare prducts. My battle with acne, rsacea, dermatitis, and mst recently, wrinkles, led me t try every miracle-in-a- jar. My bathrm drawers and cabinets verflwed with special cleansers, creams, serums, and treatments. Desperate t slve my skin prblems, I threw everything pssible n my face, yet had n idea what was wrking and what wasn t. Yes, my skin was getting nminally better, but I was cmpletely cnfused by prduct claims and ingredients. Oh, and by the way, I m an esthetician a skincare prfessinal wh was lst in skincare prducts. Then I stumbled nt a crazy and rund-abut way t weed thrugh my skincare mess: the minimalist mvement. I watched a dcumentary called Minimalism: A Dcumentary Abut the Imprtant Things because it was recmmended t me, and, hnestly, I was between televisin series n Netflix. 1 One f the mst ntewrthy messages f the film is that dwnsizing can bring peacefulness and mre time t spend ding the things we lve. That piqued my interest. Anther idea that resnated was the mre stuff yu wn, the mre it wns yu. Was I giving up partial cntrl f my wn life by having all these things arund me? Was I lsing freedm t d what I wanted, when I wanted t d it? Over time, I began t reflect and ask sme tugh questins f myself including whether I culd, pssibly, live with less stuff. One f the cntributrs t the film, Curtney Carver creatr f Prject 333, std ut frm the thers. 2 Check ut her website but in a nutshell, she challenges participants t use nly 33 articles f 1

15 Simply Beautiful Skin clthing, shes, and jewelry fr 3 mnths. Culd I d this? I read her website tp t bttm and, using her tips, I cleaned my clset and clthes dressers and even parted with sme items that I had saved fr 20 years (I swre I was ging t wear thse strappy fur-inch heels again ne day!). I must admit that my wn Prject 333 is a wrk in prgress; I have nt gtten dwn t 33 things yet I m smewhere arund 80. But after that first huge clset cleaning and smaller nes since, I have fund that I rarely miss what I have given away. And I d feel lighter and, dare I say, even happier. Since my clset is a part f my bathrm, I culdn t avid nticing the state f my bathrm cabinets and drawers, which were stuffed with csmetics, cleansers, creams, ils, misturizers, and serums. Granted, I am a ltin and ptin junkie, and I was lking fr the best way t treat my skin cnditins, but the amunt I had was ridiculus. I realized I had fallen prey t all thse advertising campaigns claiming yunger, healthier, clearer skin. I wuld use the prducts fr a few weeks, see n change in my skin, and then int the drawer they wuld be dumped. By that time, a new prduct wuld be ut with even better claims, and sn I was n t my next miracle cure. Just lather, rinse, repeat. Perhaps yu can relate? Then a crazy thught came t me. Culd I challenge myself t minimize my skincare prducts while maximizing my results? I decided t rehab my skincare rutine by researching the best ingredients fr specific skin cncerns, s that I culd discern the mst effective prducts, and then see hw much I culd reduce my prducts while attaining better results. I did a cmplete blitz f my bathrm cabinets, threw away expired prducts, and began investigating the ingredients in the rest. My experiment ended with reducing my daily skincare prduct t just the nes that benefitted my skin. (See Chapter Three: Skin Types 2

I discvered I am nt a minimalist (paring dwn t nly the mst essential items), but I want t incrprate minimalist aspects int my life, such as remving what is nn-essential and fcusing n what wrks fr me. Therefre, my gal was nt t create a skincare rutine that is as small and shrt as pssible, but t implement ne that is effective, persnalized, and uncmplicated. Yu will find this same philsphy thrughut this bk. Recmmended skincare regimes, nutritinal guidelines, and de- stressing techniques are first and fremst results-riented. They are simple, but nt necessarily easy. The case studies highlight individuals with skin types and cnditins wh, first and fremst, wanted t use the best prducts fr their skin, and, secndly, wanted t reduce the quantity f skincare items. (Plus, it wuld be awfully bring t read abut Mary wh applies sunscreen in the mrning and then is ut the dr!) Since my wn prduct rehab, I dn t think (r verthink) anymre abut my rutine, and my skin has never lked better. I lve the time and mind-space this has freed up. And since I m in the business f skincare, if a new ingredient r prduct is prmted as the latest and greatest, I will cnsider its claims, but I ve made a cmmitment t nly try it if I can substitute it fr a prduct I already use. While researching prducts, I gained a lt f knwledge abut skincare cmpanies. I began t separate cmpanies int three different categries: 1. The first I named small-batch, nn-crprate. 2. The secnd mid-sized spa. 3. And the third was large crprate - the majrity f skincare prducts fall int this grup. 3

17 Simply Beautiful Skin Large cnglmerates cntrl mst f the beauty and skincare industry. In fact, seven f these cmpanies cntrl 182 beauty brands. 3 In the interest f full transparency, these brands als include makeup and haircare prducts; but the pint is, many brands that appear independent are really cntrlled by large crprate cmpanies whse main gal is t make mney, nt imprve yur skin. They d this by charging a high price, using cheaper ingredients, and/r selling as many prducts as they can. And, usually they emply all three tactics. In mst instances, they spend mre mney n advertising than n research and prduct develpment. Fr the sake f simplifying ur understanding f the skincare industry, let s unpack the messages and tactics f mst large crprate skincare lines: Crprate Skincare Tactic #1: Charging a high price. There is nthing wrng with charging a higher price fr prducts with quality ingredients. Higher quality prducts will be mre effective in achieving the results yu want. Als, these prducts can be multitaskers, s yu will have fewer bttles lining yur cunter. Plus, yu really, truly can use a lt less, making them last lnger. But, hw d yu knw which ingredients t lk fr? And hw d yu read thse unprnunceable ingredient lists? It wuld be great t have the knwledge t quickly scan a prduct list t knw if yu are getting yur mney s wrth and if that prduct will live up t its claims. Armed with this infrmatin, yu wuldn t feel pushed int buying the latest and greatest skincare prduct simply because they state that their blend f ingredients will wrk wnders. I fund sme f the best prducts have just ne ingredient (and may even be fund in yur kitchen). 4

18 Minimize Yur Skincare Rutine Maximize the Results Crprate Skincare Tactic #2: Using cheaper ingredients. Large manufacturers f skincare prducts fill their prducts with cheaper ingredients fr tw reasns. First, this practice increases their prfit margin (bviusly). Secnd, t ensure a lng shelf life they must fill their prducts with a large quantity f typically cheap and txic preservatives. This is especially true f drugstre and department stre prducts. In my research, I fund simple, yet highly effective prducts that either d nt require any preservatives r, if they d, they nly require the least txin-prducing nes pssible. Crprate Skincare Tactic #3: Strng-arming yu int buying zillins f different prducts. This, in my pinin, is the greatest scam that large, crprate cmpanies cmmit. I have attended many crprate prduct trainings given by these cmpanies as an esthetician, and, nt all, but many skincare cmpanies have an extensive line f prducts. In ne training, fr example, the cmpany insisted their custmers use twelve different prducts in the mrning and thirteen at night, plus a nce-a-week exfliatin treatment. In my pinin, ttally crazy! T justify this, manufacturers will claim they need t spread ut the active ingredients in different prducts r they will becme t diluted t have an effect. Really? Great misturizers and hydrating ingredients can t be included in a prduct that als cntains sunscreen? Yu can see I get a bit frustrated when these explanatins (read: excuses) fr selling mre prducts are given. Hwever, keep in mind nt all cmpanies are like this. In tday s market, there are many smaller skincare cmpanies wh d business with integrity. These are the cmpanies I named small batch, nncrprate. And while they still rely n prfits, they have yur best interests at heart. 5

19 Simply Beautiful Skin There are als many mid-size cmpanies that sell exclusively t spas and carry brands that fcus n effectiveness in additin t their prfits. Many f these skincare lines are called csmeceuticals. This name was created by skincare marketing t have yu believe that the prducts are a crss between a pharmaceutical and a csmetic, thus giving the impressin that they wrk better than traditinal skincare. In truth, these claims are false. Hwever, the gd news is that these prducts may cntain mre active ingredients ingredients that wrk t treat (such as sthe, plump, r heal) r prtect yur skin. Or they may cntain a greater quantity f active ingredients. Usually, these skincare lines charge a pretty penny fr their prducts, but at least yu knw yu are getting yur mney s wrth. Thugh mst spa estheticians have integrity, sme earn cmmissins, and thus have incentive t encurage yu t purchase several prducts at a time. If yu explain yur skincare gals, including yur minimalist apprach f using less prducts, in mst cases yu will receive hnest recmmendatins. Hwever, it never hurts t have sme ingredient and prduct knwledge under yur belt, which we will cver thrughut this bk. In the past, I advised my clients n what I thught was an apprpriate number f prducts fr their needs, many times bucking the suggested prtcl by the manufacturer. But nw, with the minimalist idea stuck in my head, my challenge became t recmmend the least number f prducts and the easiest rutine, while still delivering the same r higher level f effectiveness. My research, subsequent changes in my persnal skincare regime, and my wrk with clients, were the mtivatin behind this bk. I want t give yu just enugh infrmatin t make the best, yet simplest, chices fr yur skincare regime. 6
