Versin Analyse client characteristics. 1.1 Establish natural hair type, texture, grwth patterns, length, structure and mvement by physical and visual examinatin. 1.2 Observe facial features and bne structure. 2. Cnsult with client and plan finished lk. 2.1 Apply the elements and principles f design t cmplement client facial features and bne structure and envisage alternative lng hair designs. 2.2 Review and discuss pssible finished lng hair designs using visual examples as apprpriate t establish client expectatins. 2.3 Discuss and cnfirm a preferred lng hair design finish with client. Lng hair styling is generally perfrmed fr special ccasins such as weddings and frmals. It is imprtant when cnsidering lng hair designs fr ur clients that we cnsider the hair type, texture, facial features, alternative designs and cnsultatin techniques t suggest and cnfirm client s requirements. Client hair and facial characteristics The length and density f yur client s hair will effect yur design decisins. Fr example a client with fine shulder length hair wh wants t have full abundant tresses piled high n her head, may nt be able t achieve this and may require additinal hair pieces. A client with shulder length thick hair wh perhaps wants a swept up smth style will present challenges and limitatins because f the density and vlume. Hair patterns are imprtant, just as when cutting and styling the hair, fr example a client with a large cw lick at the frnt f her head will nt be able t have a swept flat fringe n her frehead. Structure and mvement means the shape and flw f the natural hair type, by examining and determining this yu can calculate the apprpriate preparatin f the natural hair. Fr example smene with thick, wavy hair wh wants a smth tight French rll will perhaps require her hair t be straightened and de-vlumised prir t design. In cnclusin, lng hair styles shuld be well balanced with vlume and shapes psitined t cmpliment the curve f the head and natural grwth patterns. 3

Versin Hair Type Hair type is determined by genetic makeup. Peple may change their lk, but nt the hairs inherent characteristics. Have yu ever nticed that different ethnic grups have hair that lks different t yur wn? Knw that clients f African, Asian and Latin descent have many different types f hair, each with different hair care needs and hair prblems. Sme f their hair cncerns will verlap and thers will diverge. The human race can be divided amng several ethnic grups. Apart frm ther differences, there are characteristic differences in the hair types f these grups. These differences in the hair are nt nly evident by the appearance f the hair, but als by the shape f the hair shaft, hair density and texture. Fr instance, red haired peple have the least hair density while the blnde hair has the maximum hair density but usually blnde hair is als the finest hair. Althugh differences in hair type can be quite variable even within ethnic grups, ethnicity can be gruped in 3 majr divisins in accrdance t ethnic gegraphic rigin: Asian Caucasian African Asian Hair In general, Asian hair is characterised by being: Carse Straight Black High skin/hair clur cntrast Lw density Often emerges frm the scalp almst at a 90 angle Asian hairs are thick, straight, and carse. Because it is quite strng and straight it can be quite difficult t manage and get it t hld a style withut the use f strng styling prducts and using thermal styling tls.. The classic Asian hair shaft has a circular crss sectin which in thery, is what makes the hair s straight. African Hair In general African hair is characterised by being: Wiry and tightly curled Or Sfter and wavy And Lw skin/hair clur cntrast Dark brwn r Black Medium density Brush r cmb African-American hair nly when wet, this hair type is especially fragile and likely t suffer frm breakage when brushed dry, r brushed t ften. When styling the hair it will ften need t be set n rllers t help relax the curl r frizz r straightened with thermal styling equipment Caucasian Hair The cuticles n Caucasid hair tend t lie flat, allwing the hair t retain misture, reflect light and shine. Texture Hair texture refers t the diameter f the hair shaft and is defined as: Fine Medium Carse Yu may ntice that the feel f the hair may be wiry, sft r average. Carse Hair Has a large diameter and feel wiry r harsh t tuch. Because f its strength, it may be difficult t cntrl when styling and will require a strng styling prduct and thermal styling equipment. 4

Versin Medium Hair Is the easiest t manage and depending n its cnditin, is suitable fr mst hairstyles. Fine Hair Has a small diameter and tends t appear limp. When styling fine hair it is wise t use smaller rllers r styling brushes t achieve sufficient bdy. Fr extremely fine hair, a bdy wave r sft perm may be required t enhance the styling capability. Grwth Patterns The directin f the hair grwth can prduce a variety f patterns ver the scalp and hairline. Grwth patterns may becme mre nticeable when the hair is wet. Hair grwth patterns may be categrised in five (5) ways: Cwlicks Swirl Single crwn Duble crwn Stream Cwlicks Cwlicks are generally fund alng the frnt f the hairline arund the face and the nape areas. The hair grws frm these areas in a distinct directin against the nrmal grwth pattern. Thse fund n the frnt hair line are als referred t as widws peaks and are ften distinguished by a V shape in the frnt hair line making styling a straight fringe withut the hair sticking up quite difficult The client shuld wear hair lnger and have it styled t cmpliment, rather than highlight, the erratic little hair tufts. Swirl A swirl is where a sectin f the hair grws frm an axis in an utwardly spiralling manner. Again, the hair shuld be styled t cmpliment this type f grwth pattern. Single crwn A single crwn ccurs when the hair frms circular swirls at the crwn (tp) f the head. Mst peple have single crwns; hwever, the rt strength f the hair will determine hw nticeable this pattern is. Duble Crwn Duble crwn ccurs when there are tw circular swirls at the crwn f the head, ften in ppsing directins. Duble crwns ften make the hair in the centre f the crwn stick up. T help manage a duble crwn, it is best t keep this area with a little length t flatten the appearance f the grwth pattern. Stream A stream ccurs where a sectin f the hair grws in an irregular directin t the rest f the hair. Streams may ccur n any part f the head, but are mst cmmn at the nape, ften in an upward r hrizntal directin. Natural Fall Hair fllicles grw frm the scalp in different directins and this affects the way that the hair falls frm the scalp. Clients may have naturally ccurring parts. It is best t check natural hair fall when the client s hair has been shamped and the hair is still wet. Use the back f yur hand t gently push the hair frward and the hair shuld fall int its natural psitin. The natural fall f the hair must always be cnsidered when styling hair as the directin f the design is influenced by the natural fall. Mvement Mvement relates t the clients natural curl pattern. The hair may be: Straight, Wavy and Curly Mvement must always be taken int cnsideratin when planning hair designs as it will dictate what tls and styling aids yu will need fr applying the design. Fr example: If a client with curly hair wants t have a straight, sleek hair design, yu may need t use straightening irns t cmplete the lk. 5

Versin Face shapes Oval Face Shape Characteristics Style cncepts The val facial type is generally accepted as the perfect face. The cntur and prprtins f the val face frm the basis fr mdifying all ther facial types. Peple with an val face shape can wear mst hair styles and lengths with it still lking "right. Rund Heart Oblng Square Diamnd A rund face appears full with few angles and prprtinal width and length. This face shape has a brad frehead that narrws t a small chin. The blng face is lnger than it is wide s that it appears lng and thin. The frehead, cheek and jaw have similar widths. A square face has a strng jaw line, angular cheekbnes and a brad frehead. Diamnd shaped faces have narrw freheads that widen at the eye line and cheekbnes and narrw again t a small chin. The hair shuld be shaped t create the illusin f length in the face. This is achieved by creating height n tp f the head, and minimising hair width by keeping it flat at the sides and arund the ears. The hair style's bjective shuld be t create an val by adding width at the jaw line. Create shapes thrugh the nape and avid large shapes n the tp and sides. The ideal style f hair is ne which creates width at the sides disguising the narrwness. A style with a side part will help t reduce the square appearance. Hair framing the eyes helps t sften the edges Hair shuld be styled arund the face t sften the jaw line. Jaw and brw nearly same width. Hair shuld wisp arund face t reduce squareness. By creating width at the frehead and minimising it at the cheekbnes, the illusin f an val face can be achieved. A tight French twist, flat n the sides and full at the tp wuld wrk well COMPLETE ACTIVITY ONE IN LEARNERS GUIDE ACTIVITY BOOK 6

Versin Prfiles Prfile Characteristics Style cncepts Straight The facial features n the straight prfile are in a vertical line. There are n bvius features t cunterbalance. Usually all hairstyles are suitable fr this prfile Cncave A cncave prfile is a flatter face with a heavy jaw line and chin, ften with a prminent frehead Design hair t fall arund the jaw line and add hair arund the frehead t balance. Avid ver extending height at the crwn parallel t the chin Cnvex A cnvex prfile has a prminent nse, and a receding chin and frehead The hair design shuld include a full fringe t detract frm the prminent features, hair arund the face t sften and balance the chin. Keep hair clse t the head at the nape. A lwer styled chignn wuld suit this. Expectatins discussed with client Yur cnsultatin techniques are vital when finding ut what a client might want t have dne with their hair but it is als imprtant t have tls t aid yu in yur discussin. Questins which may be asked t find ut vital infrmatin; What is the event? What is the theme/dress? What hair have yu seen that yu like? Is there anything yu dn t like? Hw much d yu want t spend? Hw much time d we have n the day? This will give yu a gd indicatin f their expectatins. Yu can als use a number f tls t aid yu in a visual agreement such as sketches, phtgraphs and images in magazines. Always cnsider if the image is pssible t reinvent. Once yu have bth agreed n the lng hair design it is imprtant that yu trial that design and play with alternatives until yur client is satisfied with the utcme. Establish agreement After lking at alternative design ideas, yu and yur client will have t cme t an agreement n which ne yu will be creating fr her. It is yur jb t advise yur client n what wuld suit her best but yu als have t cnsider what she desires. Be subtly persuasive in yur recmmendatins. Befre yu can d this yu will need sme practice in finding lng hair design finishes that suit each face shape. On the previus page we talked abut facial features and bne structures and the styles that cmpliment them. Yu need t analyse the clients facial features cnfidently and have a gd knwledge f what suits the different facial shapes t ensure the end results will enhance the clients appearance. 7

If we lk back t ancient times we can see that elabrate and cmplex styles were used by many cultures. We can see that frm, texture and clur have been used in many ways and that thrughut the ages repetitin, prgressin and cntrast has been implied in the ever changing fashin. The elements and principles f design are fundamental t any design whether it be architecture, painting r hairdressing. Nt all elements and principles f design are used in every design idea. Designs are made up f many cmbinatins. 8

Versin A design is a visual plan yu can use t create a hairstyle. Everything yu can see has a design. The elements f design are the cmpnents r parts which can be islated and defined in any visual design r wrk f art. The elements f design are present in every design. Hairdressing is nt nly practical, but is a creative prfessin. Designing hairstyles is like prducing an individual wrk f art fr each client. The elements f design are categrised int: Pint Line Shape Directin Size Texture Clur Pint A pint is an element that has psitin, but n extensin. It is a single mark in space with a precise, but limited, lcatin. In hairdressing pint may be a starting pint r fcal pint. Line A line is an element characterized by length and directin, it may be straight r curved, heavy r light, sft r hard r a mixture f them all. LINE can shw MOVEMENT. LINE can suggest RHYTHM. LINE can create TEXTURAL results. In hairdressing, lines can be: Radiating ut frm ne pint A cmbinatin f hrizntal, vertical and diagnal lines Curved lines can be either large r small The line f a hairstyle is the directin in which the hair is psitined and the directin it fllws thrughut the shape. Style lines can prduce illusinary effects that can accentuate r diminish the shape f a persns head, face shape and facial features. Lk at the element directin fr hw style lines are frmed. Shape Shapes are made by cnnecting lines. Circle, square, triangle, and freefrm are wrds used t identify shapes. Lk at the bject s arund yu and describe their basic shapes. Are they ne shape, r are they a cmbinatin f many shapes? After ding this several times, yu will begin t understand what shape really is. Line creates tw dimensinal r flat shapes. When shapes are three dimensinal, we call them frms. A circle is a shape; a ball is a frm. A square is a shape; a cube is a frm. SHAPE can be defined by clur, texture r tne. SHAPE can suggest mvement r emtins. SHAPE in 3-D is called frm. In hairdressing shape is usually referred t as frm as we are dealing with 3 dimensins. Frm has tw categries: Gemetric Organic 9

Versin Gemetric shapes are precise, rdered and sharply defined (think circle, square, triangle). Organic shapes are freer flwing and natural shapes. They can be graceful and curved r a cmbinatin f sharp and curved lines. There are ther shapes. Angular shapes are straight edged and the eye mves alng the shape and stps mmentarily where ne shape meets anther. There are differences in the quality f frm. Frms may be: Open frm Clsed frm Delicate frm Fragile frm Heavy frm Slid frm An pen frm is ne that can be lked int r thrugh. A clsed frm is slid in appearance. Open and clsed frms may be cmbined. Delicate frms are very subtle in difference r distinctin. Fragile frm is where the frm is brken int several shapes Heavy frm is where the lines f the frm appear t be heavy, but nt slid. Slid frm is where the shape is slid, ften ne length. Directin We ften call directin Mvement. In hairdressing mvement and directin can be related t the curl patterns f the hair, fr example; the hair may be straight, wavy r curly, r hw the hair is placed. DIRECTION is abut hw ur eyes mve alng a given path DIRECTION can be hrizntal, vertical, curved, slped r straight. DIRECTION can suggest mvement by the speed at which it is changed. DIRECTION can be balanced t give stability r imbalanced t give tensin When styling, a hrizntal line is frmed when there is width rather than length. The hrizntal style line will give a narrw face shape r neckline the illusin f fullness. A vertical line is frmed where the hair has mre height than width. This style line can give the rund face shape r thick neckline an illusin f thinness. A diagnal line is frmed where the hairstyle is graduated r styled in an asymmetrical manner and, depending n the psitin f the gradatin, may create the illusin f length r width. The style lines shuld cntinuusly mve frm ne pint f the head t the ends f the hair. Curved lines are mving lines that curve within the shape such as curls and waves Cntur lines may be described as the silhuette r utline f the hair design. Size Size is abut hw large r small an area is. SIZE can be given by cmparing ne element that is larger r smaller than the ther. SIZE can make a particular element lk imprtant. BIG small Texture Texture is the surface quality f an item. Its hw smething feels when tuched, r lks like it wuld feel if tuched. Sandpaper is rugh. Velvet is smth. A drawing f a tree stump culd shw rugh uter bark and a smth inner surface. Texture adds variety and interest. Search fr ways t add texture t yur hair designs. Sme wrds ften used t describe it are dull, shiny, stiff, fuzzy, smth, r rugh. TEXTURE is used t create a surface appearance in design. 10

Versin TEXTURE is the part f the surface that can be felt r seen. TEXTURE is cncerned with tuch, hw smething feels. TEXTURE can be rugh, smth, spiky, sft, velvety, regular r irregular. TEXTURE can be real, the surface texture is actually rugh (activated)r smth (un-activated) r it can be suggested by the way the surface is treated. Hair texture in relatin t design As discussed in Chapter 1, hair texture affects the technique used t create a hairstyle and als applies t haircutting, cluring and waving/straightening techniques. Yu can incrprate natural texture f yur clients hair int the hair design r, if the client is inclined, yu may design a hairstyle that will require sme effrt t change the visual cmpnent f the texture, fr example; straighteners, rllers, r crimpers will change hw the texture f the hair lks. Clur Clur is an element f design with endless variety. Clur has the ability t affect feelings and mds. It is described as having temperature, intensity, hue, saturatin, and lightness, tints and shades; these are the prperties f clur. Clur may be used t give depth and cntrast t a design. The clur wheel shws the basic clurs that we see every day, in rder f their relatinships t ne anther. Principals f Design The Principles are cncepts used t rganise r arrange the structural elements f design. The principals f design that relate t hairdressing are: Balance Gradatin Repetitin Cntrast Harmny Dminance Balance Balance is the cntrl f the elements in attracting attentin. This attentin must be evenly r unevenly spread ver the area t make sure interest in kept up, all the way thrugh the hairstyle, withut being static r chatic. Balance can be achieved with clur, line, shape, and/r texture. There are tw different types f balance: symmetrical (frmal) and asymmetrical (infrmal). Symmetrical means having all elements equal n bth sides f a Symmetrical balance design. Asymmetrical is when elements n bth sides are nt equal. Balance gives a feeling f stability. Balance can create mvement, tensin, r calmness. Asymmetrical balance Balance f the pictrial elements can act like a see-saw r lever. The elements can be balanced arund a vertical, hrizntal, r diagnal axis with enugh variety s that the hairstyle has rhythm and energy. Gradatin Gradatin is the use f a gradual increase r decrease f elements in the hair design, fr example, the clur may be light at the frnt hairline and gradually gets darker twards the nape. Gradatin can add interest and mvement t a shape. A gradatin frm dark t light will cause the eye t mve alng a shape. Alternatively, gradatin frm large t small will create an illusin f height. 11

Versin Repetitin Repetitin is the use f similar r cnnected elements. Fr example, similar shapes, clurs r lines that are used mre than nce. Repetitin with variatin is interesting hwever, withut variatin repetitin can becme mntnus. Repetitin is smetimes called rhythm. Repetitin can be regular r irregular and even r uneven. Repetitin can be in the frm f RADIATION where the repeated elements spread ut frm a central pint. Repetitin may be in the frm f GRADATION where the repeated elements slwly becme smaller r larger. Repetitin can be created by: Repeating a clur, shape, texture, line, r space when designing. Varying the size f similar shapes bjects, r lines in sequence (small t large/ large t small). Using a prgressin f clurs frm tints t shades (light blue t dark blue). Cntrast Cntrast means pictrial elements that stand ut because they are nt alike fr example: Squares and circles and triangles, Red, yellw and blue cntrast as they are s dissimilar. Cntrast can be made by putting bjects tgether that d nt nrmally g tgether and therefre make each ther stand ut mre, than they wuld separately. Cntrast gives variety and makes the elements livelier. Be careful thugh, t much cntrast scattered thrughut a design can destry unity and make a style difficult t lk at. Unless a feeling f chas and cnfusin are what the client is seeking, it is a gd idea t carefully cnsider where t place yur areas f maximum cntrast. Harmny Harmny is the cmbinatin f elements that are similar and g tgether. Hairdressers d this by repeating elements, interlcking similar shapes and directing the eye f the viewer arund the hair frm ne similar element t the next r alng a line r shape. Lines and shapes that repeat each ther shw harmny (curved lines with curved shapes). Clurs that have a cmmn hue are harmnius. Textures that have a similar feel add t unity. T much unifrmity smetimes can be bring, s use discretin when applying the elements and principals f design, if the elements lk right tgether, yu have created harmny. Harmny relates t the ability t link the design elements and principals t each ther in a way that reinfrces the basic design. Fr example, carse, rugh textures with angular lines. Harmny is a measure f hw the elements f a page seem t fit tgether r belng. Dminance Every design needs an accent a pint f interest. Dminance is the quality that draws yur attentin t a certain part f a design first. There are several ways t create dminance: Use a cntrasting clur Change the tne f a clur Use a different texture Use a different r unusual line Use cntrasting shapes Make a shape very large r very small. Use a different shape. Dminance helps t create harmny as the eye is attracted t a key pint then led arund the image by the elements. Dminance is the uter interest in a design. It is the first thing yu see when yu lk at a design. One example f dminance is a bld headline in a newspaper. Design elements and principles are used in all hair designs, bth classic and current. Designing hairstyles des nt need advanced drawing skills, a few lines will indicate the what that a style will lk like COMPLETE ACTIVITY THREE IN LEARNERS GUIDE ACTIVITY BOOK 12

Yu will select the apprpriate prduct based n the hair style yu are aiming t achieve and the hair type yu are wrking with. Yu shuld apply the prduct as instructed and recmmended by the prduct manufacturer.. Prducts are brken dwn int the fllwing categries Pre styling prducts designed t assist yu in creating a fundatin f texture and mvement fr yur planned design. These may include: Musse Gel Vlumising spray Smthing creams Curl enhancers During styling prducts t assist yu in mulding and creating yur style. These may include Sft hairsprays Mulding creams Pst styling Prducts t assist yu in hlding yur finished design in place r adding special finishes. These may include Shine serum r cream Firm hlding sprays Special effects sprays such as glitter It is imprtant that yu understand the stying prducts yu are wrking with therefre it is up t yu t extend yur knwledge n what prducts yu have available, what they have been designed t d and what the manufacturer s instructins are fr use. Selecting tls and equipment Selecting and applying tls and equipment, t create finished classic and current hair designs n lng hair requires knwledge f the elements f design. The applicatin f these elements shuld be applied using design principles t create finished hair designs that enhance client characteristics. 13

Versin Demnstrated knwledge f the safe applicatin f hair design tls and equipment, alng with the applicatin f relevant legislatin and wrkplace practices, particularly in regard t wrkplace safety and hygiene, are required Creating lng hair designs traditinally invlves elngatin and/r manipulatin f the shape, creating height and/r length. In rder t achieve this yu must first understand what tls and techniques yu can use t achieve yur design The fllwing tls and techniques are used t achieve the planned finished design TOOLS TECHNIQUE DESIGN Ht rllers generally cme in ne standard bx size with many different rller sizes. Used n dry hair and secured with special pins Start by washing, cnditining and drying the hair cmpletely with a styling aid such as musse r gel Part ff a sectin f hair the same length and diameter f yur rller Over-direct the hair fr mre vlume; under direct the hair fr n vlume, as yu cmb the sectin smth. Smth the rller nt the ends and wrap it dwn. Make sure the ends stay tucked under (perm end papers can cme in handy) Rll the sectin dwn t the scalp and secure. Hld the hair taut while rlling t prevent a slppy, sagging set. If yu find the sides f yur sectin are lse, increase the tensin by mving the rller frm side t side while wrapping Allw the rllers t cl cmpletely befre gently remving rllers A smthing brush can nw be used t cntrl the hair whilst designing yur up style Velcr rllers - Available in a range f sizes t create everything frm really tight curls t smth vlume. Generally used n dry hair but can be used fr wet setting under a hded dryer als Start by washing, cnditining and drying the hair cmpletely with a styling aid such as musse r gel. Part ff a sectin f hair the same length and diameter f yur rller. Over-direct the hair fr mre vlume; under direct the hair fr n vlume, as yu cmb the sectin smth. Fr mre bdy and hld spray the entire sectin with hairspray. Be sure t get underneath and spray the rts in the vlume area then cmb thrugh the hair nce mre befre wrapping the sectin. 14

Versin Leave the rllers in the hair fr 5 t 15 minutes. Cmb the hair nly with yur fingers r a large tthed cmb t lsen the texture. A smthing brush can nw be used t cntrl the hair whilst designing yur up style. Straightening Irn generally used n dry hair t create flat, shiny finish. Sme manufacturers have made them t dry hair at the same time as straightening Start by washing, cnditining and drying the hair cmpletely with a styling aid such as musse r gel. Make small partings n lnger than the base f the flat irn itself and cmb thrugh. The smaller the partings, the cleaner and straighter each f yur sectins can be. Then, use a slw sliding mtin t get a smthing, silk effect. Curling irn Used n dry hair, cmes in a range f sizes frm very small t very large The smth flat texture f hair will allw yu t create shiny flat shapes Start by washing, cnditining and drying the hair cmpletely with a styling aid such as musse r gel. Divide the hair int segments abut as thick and as lng as yur curling irn. Starting with the bttm f the head (hairline) cmb the hair t make sure it is free f tangles. Offscalp braiding Offscalp braiding refers t the sectin f the braid that is nt clse t the scalp, this may als be called a plait. Internal braiding The internal braid is a three strand braiding technique where the strands f hair are crssed ver the centre strand f hair. The internal braid has an inverted appearance and may als be referred t as an invisible braid. 19

Versin This technique may be used t create a single braid which cnfrms t the shape f the head r fr multiple braids that can be wrn straight r elabrately frmed int a variety f shapes. External braiding External braiding is a three strand braiding technique. Unlike internal braiding, the strands f the external braid are crssed under the centre strand. Crssing the strands under the centre strand creates a prjected r visible braid pattern. If used n narrw sectins the braid may then be called a crnrw. Crnrwing is suitable fr mst hair types, and is particularly ppular with peple wh have very curly hair and shuld last fr a few weeks. Fish tail braiding The fishtail technique is a tw strand braiding technique that is named fr the lk that it creates. The fishtail braid resembles the bne structure f fish. Kntting There are several types f kntting, including: The pnytail rll Tp knt Bun Tp knt The tp knt invlves tying the hair int a pnytail, plaiting the pnytail and wrapping the hair int a rll and securing with pins. The tp knt gives the impressin f an intricately braided knt at the crwn f the head. This technique may als be used at the base f the head. Pny tail rll The pny tail rll is where the hair is tied int a lse pnytail and separated abve the rubber band in the middle and the pnytail in inserted int the space that is created. The pnytail rll gives the perceptin f hair that has been styled using diagnal French twists with the hair left hanging at the nape f the neck. Bun The bun is similar t a tp knt, except the hair is nt plaited befre being wund arund the base f the pny tail. Buns may be infrmal and lse r appear mre frmal if tightly wund. Hair is prepared Prir t perfrming braid services n yur client, yu must prepare the hair accrding yur wrkplace prcedures. Yur wrk[place prcedures fr preparing the hair fr braiding may include shamping and cnditining the hair, leaving the hair damp r drying the hair cmpletely prir t the service and brushing r cmbing the hair prir t the braid service. Here are sme tips t ensure that the hair is prepared t ensure the best braid results: Befre beginning t braid, be sure t remve any rings, bracelets r watches that have prngs r catches that might get caught in hair, and make sure yur fingernails are filed smthly, as snagging the hair can easily und all yur wrk. Begin every braid by making sure hair is as smth as pssible and entirely free f even the smallest tangles. Cmb the hair with a wide-tth cmb until the cmb mves easily thrugh all the hair, then divide it int small sectins and cmb it with a finer-tth cmb t be sure all knts have been remved. Even small knts will cause yu prblems dwn the rad. If the hair is very lng, be sure t cmb the unbraided hair rutinely as yu wrk, including the ends f the sectins f hair that have already been braided. 20

Versin Braiding techniques T learn hw t braid, it helps t knw the basic braid, which is n this page. Familiarity with the Basic braid will help yu in accmplishing ther braids with ease. Fr best results n a Basic braid, pull hair int a tight pnytail. 1. Separate the pnytail int 3 equal strands. Hld 2 strands in yur right hand with yur palm facing up. Hld the third strand in yur left hand. 2. Turn yur right hand ver s yur palm is nw facing dwn. This makes the right strand nw in the middle and the middle strand n the right. 3. Switch hands and hld right strand in the right hand and the middle strand and left strands in the left hand with palm facing up. Turn yur left hand until yur palm is facing dwn. Repeat steps 1 thru 3 until there is n hair available t braid. Fasten Off scalp braid This is the mst cmmn three strand braid and is quick and easy t create. Off scalp braid n their wn are ften called plaits. Hw d we d it? Direct the hair t the nape f the head and cmb the hair smth Secure the hair int a pnytail, using a rubber band Divide all f the hair int three even sectins and cmb each sectin smth Crss the right hand sectin ver the middle sectin. The riginal right hand sectin is nw the middle sectin. Pull all the sectins away frm each ther t tighten the plait. Crss the left hand sectin ver the middle sectin. The riginal left hand sectin is nw the middle sectin. Tighten the plait again. Cntinue the prcess alternating right and left sectins ver the middle sectin, tightening each plait as yu make it. Secure the end f the braid with a hair-safe pnytail hlder. Twisted tw strand braid The twisted tw strand braid gives a unique finish t an therwise basic braid. This technique shuld be applied t dry hair. Hw d we d it? Part the hair int tw sectins and distribute the hair diagnally frm the parting. Divide a small sectin f hair where yu want the braid t start and subdivide the sectin int tw even strands Take the strand nearest the hairline and twist it twards the face Take the twisted strand and crss it ver the tp f the ther strand Pick up the next sectin f hair frm nearest the hairline and incrprate it int the untwisted strand then twist the whle strand twards the face and crss it ver the ther strand Cntinue with this technique arund the head t the nape area. Secure the hair at the base f the nape with a rubber band Repeat the technique fr the ther sectin. 21

Versin Fishtail Braids This is a stunning tw-strand n scalp braid and is a great way t learn the cncept f braiding befre tackling three strands n scalp. Hw d we d it? Just like the Basic Braid, this braid turns ut best if yu pull hair back int a tight pnytail first. The difference between the tw braids is that yu are ging t separate the pnytail int 2 strands instead f three. Once yu have separated the pnytail, yu are ging t start ut by hlding the 2 strands in yur left hand. Nw yu are ging t take a thin piece frm the utside f the right strand and jin it with the left strand. Reverse hw yu are hlding hair and switch hands. With yur left hand take a thin piece frm the utside f the left strand and jin it with the right strand. Cntinue the prcess alternating right and left sectins, tightening each plait as yu make it, until yu reach the hairline at the nape f the neck Secure the remaining hair with a rubber band. Yu can then let the remaining hair hang free r weave a standard ff scalp braid t the ends. Tips Fr a different lk, crss the sectins f hair under each ther instead f ver. Keeping yur hands clse t the head will create a tighter braid, hlding yur hands away frm the head will create a lser, mre draped braid. Internal Braid This is a beautiful invisible three strand n scalp braid that lks much mre cmplicated than it is. Hw d we d it? Divide a small sectin f hair where yu want the braid t start (usually at the crwn f the head) int three even sectins. Cmb each sectin smth. Crss the right hand sectin ver the middle sectin. The riginal right hand sectin is nw the middle sectin. Pull all the sectins away frm each ther t tighten the plait. Crss the left hand sectin ver the middle sectin. The riginal left hand sectin is nw the middle sectin. Tighten the plait again. Using the pinted end f a tail cmb, lift a small sectin f hair n the right by drawing a line against the scalp frm the hairline t the middle f the braid abut a half inch t an inch beneath the first plait, depending n the thickness f yur hair and hw wven yu want it t lk (mre strands create a mre wven appearance). Add the new sectin f hair t the existing sectin n the right and then crss it ver the middle sectin; tighten the plait. Again using the handle f a tail cmb, lift a small sectin f hair n the left by drawing a line against the scalp frm the hairline t the middle f the braid even with the sectin yu just lifted frm the right, add this hair t the existing sectin n the left and then crss it ver the middle sectin. Cntinue the prcess alternating right and left sectins ver the middle sectin, tightening each plait as yu make it, until yu reach the hairline. Secure the end f the braid with a rubber band r cntinue weaving a plait t the ends f the hair. 22

Versin External Braid Like an internal braid, the external braid is a three strand n scalp technique which lks much mre cmplicated than it is. Hw d we d it? Divide a small sectin f hair where yu want the braid t start (usually at the crwn f the head) int three even sectins. Cmb each sectin smth. Crss the right hand sectin under the middle sectin. The riginal right hand sectin is nw the middle sectin. Pull all the sectins away frm each ther t tighten the plait. Crss the left hand sectin under the middle sectin. Add the new sectin f hair t the existing sectin n the right and then crss it under the middle sectin; tighten the plait. Again using the handle f a rat tail cmb, lift a small sectin f hair n the left by drawing a line against the scalp frm the hairline t the middle f the braid even with the sectin yu just lifted frm the right, add this hair t the existing sectin n the left and then crss it under the middle sectin. Cntinue the prcess alternating right and left sectins under the middle sectin, tightening each plait as yu make it, until yu reach the hairline. Secure the end f the braid with a rubber band r cntinue weaving a plait t the ends f the hair. French Braid Hw d we d it? Start by taking a sectin frm the tp f the head. Separate this sectin int 3 strands crssing right ver middle and then left ver middle, as if yu were ding a Basic Braid. Switch all f the strands ver t yur left hand and keep strands separated. Yu can nw gather a small even sectin frm the right side f the head with yur right hand and add it t the right strand. Bring the strand yu have just added t, ver t the middle and bring the middle strand t the right. Nw switch hands keeping all strands separate, s yur left hand will be free. Gather a sectin f hair frm the left side f the head. Add this t the left strand. Yu will nw bring the left strand ver t the middle and bring the middle sectin t the left. As yu fllw these steps, try t keep yur hands clse t the head s the braid will be tight. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until there is n hair available t add. Finish style with a Basic Braid and fasten. NOTE: There are many mre braiding techniques that may be applied. Yur trainer may demnstrate ther braiding techniques nt utlined in this learning guide, which are n less accurate. 23

Versin The Rpe Braid Hw d we d it? This is anther braid that wrks best n a pnytail, preferably lng and ne length. Yu may want t start with damp hair. Separate the pnytail int 3 strands. Hld 2 strands in the left hand and 1 in the right hand. Wind the strand in yur right hand arund yur index finger t the right. Then switch hands s that all 3 strands are in yur right hand, separated with yur fingers. Hld nt wund strand, s it des nt unravel. Bring the wund strand ver s it is nw n the left. Then switch all 3 strands back t the left hand. Nw yur right hand can wind the right strand again. Repeat steps 2 and 3 t the end f the pnytail. D nt release r the rpe will unravel! T secure Rpe, fasten with tight elastic. Single strand braid Hw d we d it A very simple braiding technique that sme wuld say is nt truly a braid because f its simple twisting actin. The twisting actin incrprates the hair withut needing t crss ver any clearly defined strands like ther braiding techniques. This methd can take many frms and variatins n the theme. But the principle remains the same. Yu can take either large r small sectins t create these different lks. The methd described belw is the mst cmmnly seen versin f this methd. Brush the hair back frm the clients face ensuring that there are n tangles r knts in the hair. Take a sectin f hair apprximately 1cm in width frm the centre f the frehead and prceed t twist the hair in a straight line back twards the crwn area and secure the single braid with a bbby pin at the tp f the head. Repeat the actin by taking anther sectin beside the first and cntinue t fllw the line back twards the crwn. Once again secure the new braid with a bbby pin. The final lk shuld resemble a crn rw effect with multiple small strands all leading frm the frnt hairline twards the crwn. Once all f the hair has been assembled at the crwn area it can be either curled r straightened (depending n the hairs texture) t create height r be made a dminate feature f the hair style. Client cmfrt and safety ensured As with all hairdressing services, yur prfessinal duty t yur clients is t familiarise yurself with yur wrk place plicies and prcedures and relevant legislatin. The Occupatinal Health and Safety Act 2000 makes it yur duty by law t ensure the cmfrt and safety f yur clients thrughut any service that yu prvide t them. There are sme basic safety precautins that yu shuld take t ensure that yur client is safe and cmfrtable thrughut their visit t the saln: Always wash yur hands prir t undertaking any service Cmbs, brushes and equipment must be cleaned and sanitises r disinfected after each use 24

Versin The client shuld be gwned apprpriately fr the service accrding t yur wrkplace plicies and prcedures All twels and wraps must be washed after each use Equipment must be kept in gd repair; electrical equipment with damaged r frayed crds must nt be used. When blw drying, direct airflw away frm the scalp t prevent burns D nt immerse electrical equipment in water and keep away frm wet area D nt leave equipment turned n fr lnger than necessary T prevent burning wrkstatin r trlley surfaces, use a stand r twel when using thermal equipment Clean thermal equipment regularly Never wind electrical crds arund thermal equipment, especially when ht and wait fr the equipment t cl befre string T prevent burning the clients scalp and ears, use a cmb between ht tngs and the scalp r if using rllers, use cttn wl between the scalp and the rller. D nt allw plastic cmbs t cme int cntact with the ht implement as the cmb may melt D nt allw metal cmbs t cme int cntact with the scalp and the ht implement at the same time as the metal will get ht and burn the clients scalp Wrkplace timeframes met It is essential when planning a special lng hair design that yu can achieve the desired result within a realistic time frame. Mst saln appintments are arund 45 minutes lng. Yur selected time fr yur hair design wuld need t cnsider the fllwing factrs; What is the density and length? if yu are wrking with extremely thick r lng hair it will take yu much lnger t apply rllers r ht irn wrk than with smene with shrter/finer hair. Is the hair being wet set? it culd take ne whle appintment t wash, prepare and apply rllers t yur clients hair and then it culd take up t 45 minutes t dry depending n the density and length. Yu will then have t create the design, which culd be ne appintment if yu have practiced r perhaps lnger. Is the hair being dry set? - dry setting, ht rllers r Velcr rllers are less time cnsuming but yu will have at least a 10 minute cling dwn perid befre taking ut the rllers. Hw can yu use this time effectively? By preparing yur trlley and tls fr the next part f the service. Des the style require a lt f prepping? example backcmbing the hair may be clean and ready t be styled but requires prepping like backcmbing first. Remember yu must secure yur fundatin first therefre again depending n the length and density it culd take yu 5 r even 25 minutes. Des the hair need t be irned first? If the hair needs t be washed, blw dried and then irned then that culd be ne appintment, requiring abut the 45minutes t design the hair finish With all this in mind, we all wrk at different speeds and therefre we cannt give exact timeframes at this stage as it is up t yu t practice and mnitr yur times t fit in with yur wn saln timeframes. Client satisfactin cnfirmed Yu cannt cnfirm yur client s satisfactin until right near the end f yur service. But cnstant cnsideratin and cmmunicatin is imprtant in ensuring yu are achieving the desired result. Yur cnsultatin wuld have been thrugh, allwing yu t select the apprpriate hair design fr yur client s features, characteristics and requirements. T ensure yu have achieved the best pssible result it is suggested that yu d the fllwing: Cnfirm the prcedure befre cmmencing If an exact finished has nt been agreed upn, narrw yur selectin t 2 alternatives t maintain timeframes Dn t be afraid t ask yur client hw the design is lking and hw she feels, many peple are nt used t wearing their hair in such a different design and may take sme time t get used t it Reassure yur client using psitive cmmunicatin If yu are running ut f time, dn t panic, explain t yur client and if yu need t, ask fr help On cmpletin adjust the style when requested r as required 25

Versin Advise t clients n after care f their hairstyle All hairstyles require sme frm f maintenance after they leave the saln. It is up t the stylist t recmmend and prvide the client with the crrect advice n the prducts they need t use. Gd prduct knwledge is essentail t ensure the prducts that are recmmended achieve the desired results. Lng hair designs will require sme care t ensure the shape is nt altered r disturbed after leaving the saln. If the hairstyle is fr a special ccasin such as a wedding r frmal functin the client may need t purchase hairspray r ther fixing prducts t keep the style in place. Other prducts may als be identified as being needed by the client during the cnsultatin prcess. During the cnsultatin prcess the stylist may find the client s hair requires better cnditining hair care prducts. Maintnence hair care prduct such as shamp s, cnditiners and treatments shuld be recmmended t the client t ensure the clients hair remain healthy, as well as prvides the client with a full and cnsidered service.
