9 News & Events Radley annunces sales and marketing restructure Stephen Webster wins Cuture Design Award British jewellery designer Stephen Webster received the prestigius Best f Diamnds Award at the 2009 Cuture Design Awards held n May 30 th, 2009 at the Wynn Las Vegas. Stephen s winning entry was a nef-a-kind diamnd cascade necklace frm his Jewels Verne fine jewellery cllectin. The piece is made f 18K white gld and includes 16.22ct f diamnds and 2.13ct f white diamnd drps, retailing fr 88,000. I exhibited at the Cuture Shw fr the first time 10 years ag under my wn name, and that year we wn the Editr s Chice Award, which was the mst exciting thing fr me, said Stephen. 10 NATIONAL SKILLS ACADEMY FOR RETAIL LAUNCHED The Natinal Skills Academy fr Retail was recently launched natinwide with the annuncement f the first 18 retail skills shps members. When fully established, the Natinal Skills Academy fr Retail will becme the biggest netwrk f retail training centres ever seen in the UK. The retail sectr currently emplys three millin peple in the UK, but since the start f 2008, it has seen cmpanies clse with the lss f almst 57,000 jbs. This equates t 1.9 per cent f the retail wrkfrce. Hwever, in the last fur mnths alne, 42,395 jbs have been annunced by majr retailers including Sainsbury s, Tesc, H&M, and Asda. Accrding t a reprt by the UK Cmmissin fr Emplyment and Skills, ne millin retail jbs may need filling in the perid t 2017 with UKCES research revealing that cmpanies investing in the skills f their wrkfrce are 2.5 times mre likely t survive than thse wh d nt. I am a trained actress s I spent the years pre-deuxième enjying lts f fun acting jbs in theatre, televisin and film. There were, hwever, quite a few perids f n wrk, which was nt s enjyable! Initially I did a lt f waitressing between acting jbs but then a friend intrduced me t a great secnd-hand shp, Dressage (nw Deuxième!) where she was wrking part-time, s I gt myself a jb there whilst cntinuing t act. WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO LAUNCH THE BUSINESS? After a few years f wrking at Dressage part-time, the wner wanted t sell the business and mve t the cuntry t start a family. By that time I was aware that I needed smething t supplement my acting career if I ever wanted t get a mrtgage and have a regular incme, s I made an vernight decisin t get a huge bank lan and buy the business. 82 Carried AWAY Jewellery designer Carri Vacik tells us abut the experience and exticism that has influenced the jurney behind creating her business... Many businesses are launched having been inspired by a designer s persnal life, with dmesticity subtly influencing the creative chices that take cmpanies frm sketches t shps. This is the case fr Carri Vacik, a jewellery designer whse inspiratin des cme frm her envirnment, but ne that takes in enviably glamrus lcatins such as Paris and Bangkk rather than Prestn and Burnham-n-Cruch! The mentin f such stylish cities culd suggest that Carri enjys a life f relaxed and exciting travel, hwever, cnsumers wuld be hard pressed t find a designer wh has wrked s diligently and with such attentin t detail in the build up t her business. Fr Carri, Paris was as much abut study as it was style due t the fact that she was in the French capital t gain a prestigius graduate diplma in gemlgy. The irresistible beauty and histry f the city happily sparked Carri s imaginatin, as she explains. Often I wuld g t the Place Vendôme and lk at the beautiful jewels, and there, everybdy wears jewellery. I guess it inspired me t design and develp my wn high quality riginal pieces. At this stage many peple wuld have launched head first int full time design, but Carri tk the decisin t devte mre time t her educatin by embarking n studies in jewellery design at Hlts Academy in Lndn. Sn, Carri built up a cnsiderable prtfli f wrk that saw her repeatedly develp and decnstruct designs in an effrt t achieve exactly what she wanted. Once she was satisfied with her prgress, Carri tk the next step f her jurney and travelled t Bangkk fr surcing. I bked a trip t Bangkk t g t the gem and jewellery fair. I determined that my wrk wuld nt nly be abut me as a designer but als as a gemlgist, using my acquired skills t surce tp quality stnes. I was intrduced t sme gldsmiths with whm I nw cllabrate clsely and we wrked n sme samples. I was impressed, s I selected the pieces that wuld be my first cllectin and they then prduced them by hand says Carri. Carri s expertise, experience and Gan heritage has all cme tgether in a cllectin that she describes as extic, sensual, unique and rich in beauty and clur. The striking jewellery is glamrus with an almst regal quality that hints at the time dedicated t each design, a fact that means Carri is in n rush t prduce wrk n a stringent time scale, as she asserts. Because my pieces are ne f a kind, at this stage I am ging t release new pieces as the inspiratin takes me. New lines will emerge rganically, rather than as part f a marketing driven need t release new ranges n a regular basis. Carri s cnfidence is shared by her target cnsumer and stckist, bth f which she believes can be described as independent minded, trend setting entities with respect fr craftsmanship and a lve f genuine stnes. This ideal is evident in the cnstruct f the Carri Vacik website which was launched as sn as the cllectin was ready and acts as a challenge that has allwed the designer t fully cmmunicate the aim f her business with peple all ver the wrld. In typical frm, when asked what the future hlds fr her business Carri has her eyes fixed firmly n gaining further knwledge f jewellery thrugh travel, as she reveals.
