1 CHAPTER III HISTORY OF MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES AT KOLHAPUR 3.1 HISTORY OF KOLHAPUR Klhapur is a city situated in the suthwest crner f Maharashtra, India. Klhapur serves as the headquarters f the Klhapur district. Klhapur is situated n the banks f the river Panchganga. It has an elevatin f 569 metres (1867 ft) which is higher than that f Pune. By rad, Klhapur is 228 km suth f Pune, 615 km nrth-west f Bangalre and 530 km west f Hyderabad. The nearest cities and twns within Maharashtra are Ichalkaranji (20 km), Kagal (17 km), Sangli (50 km), and Miraj (45 km). Accrding t legend it was settled by Klhasur, a demn wh was later killed by Mahalakshmi t relieve the lcal ppulace. Hwever, hnuring the demn's dying wish, the city was named after him. The winter temperatures are a bit higher cmpared t ther cities in Maharashtra such as Pune and Nasik. Klhapur is famus fr Textile industries als. Ichalkarnji is famus fr Textile business. Industrial develpment in Klhapur was initiated by an industrial estate knwn as Udyamnagar which is still running with small scale industries and wrkshps. Klhapur has three main industrial crpratins (MIDCs) namely Shirli, Gkul Shirgan and five star MIDC at Kagal. Klhapur is ne f the mst imprtant places fr fundry businesses. Mst f the fundries are in sand casting. Ichalkaranji is well develped and is ne f the emerging cities f Maharashtra. Chandgad:- This is the suthern tehsil in the district and brders tuches Karnataka, Ga and Kkan. They have their wn plant near Venice in Italy. The Plant is spread ver 85 acres f land. The plant was inaugurated n 8 th April, The plant at present has facilities fr yarn dyeing and weaving. The prcessing capacity is abut 6 lacs meters per mnth. The weaving machines are capable f prducing abut 27,000 mtrs f fabric per day. The cmpany has als installed Luwa Humidificatin Plant alng with Chiller t prvide cntrlled temperature and humidity. The cmpany has a cmpliment f arund 700 wrkers and 100 ther staff n its rll. The cmpany has gt ISO 14001: 2004 Certificate n The cmpany believes in envirnmental safety and have planted varius types f trees n abut 20 acres f land. INDRIA GANDHI MAHILA SAHAKARI SOOT GIRNI LTD., ICHALKARANJI Textile is the main ccupatin f Ichalkaranji, aptly knwn as the Manchester f Maharashtra. The histry f its textiles industry dates back t 1904 when the first pwerlm utside the cmpsite mill was established in India. The pwerlm industry was set fr a gradual grwth under the patrnage f Shrimat Narayanra Ghrpade, the erstwhile Chief f this princely twn. He carefully nurtured the industry in its infant days.
